Ch 3

The Sound Of The Forest

"Jae. My name is Jae."

She watched as the boy, Luhan, processed the words before giving a small smile,

"Well thank-ks Jae..for the help."

She muttered a 'your welcome' not thinking what she did was a big deal, before the boy began to walk away and she just stood there. Her eyes dragged towards the forest knowing that she needed to go back, before falling back to the retreating boy, his stick making that 'click clack' noise. Her ears twitched every time the stick made contact with the concrete and looking back at the forest, her home, one last time, she bit her lip.

"I'm sorry." She whispered before turning on her heel and jogging, quickly catching up to the boy.

Hearing heavy footsteps coming towards him, the boy turned his head to the side, still walking, and soon she was once again next to him. Running a hand through her hair, she looked at the boy,

"Mind if I walk with you?" She asked and she watched as the boys eyebrows went up,

"Sure. You-your not busy?"

She just shrugged,

"Me? Trust me I'm never busy."

He looked ahead confused,

"You don't have work or-or school?"

She just titled her head,

"No."

She did not understand the concept of work. Upon hearing the word school though she was very excited,

"Are you going to school?"

His face remained contempt as they continued walking,

"Me? Um ye-yes I am."

She immediatly began to smile just imagining what school was and what it offered,

"Wah! What's it like? Is it fun? Do they have games? Are there many people?"

He came to a stop and she also stopped, confused. He turned towards her shocked,

"You've never been to school?"

She shook her head,

"No, I wish."

He furrowed his eyebrows before breaking out in laughter. The girl almost fell over, surprised from his warm, honey like voice.

"Trust me you don't. It's not as fun as it seems."

She just frowned,

"Really?"

He just nodded,

"Yeah. And you really never been?"

"Nope."

Surprised, he tapped his stick on the side of his foot,

"Wait, how old are you?"

Now he was even more confused.

"Me?"

She thought about it for a second. She didn't remember much of her growing up. All she remembered was that she awoke in this form and has been like this for a long time. A very long, long, long, time.

"I don't know." She frowned.

Now it was his turn to almost fall over, his jaw went slack,

"You don't know? Well what year were you born? When's your birthday?"

She tilted her head to the other side,

"Birthday? What is that?"

He frowned,

"The day you were born."

She just shrugged,

"All I know it was a lunar year and there was a full moon."

The boy just stood there his mind going into a frenzy. Millions of questions began to fill his head, but the girl just cut off him off,

"Arn't we going to school?"

She watched as the boys face went wide and he muttered something under his breath. Again they started walking and this time silence followed. She didn't mind the silence though, in fact, she was fascinated by all the other things going on around her. The lights, the cars, people walking. It was like a kid in a candy store. She was in a whole new world and it was very interesting.

"Do you see a gate?" The boy asked making her wondering attention fall back on him.

She tilted her head at him before looking around. A couple streets away she saw a large gate and people walking through,

"Yeah, but for some odd reason they seem to be closing it." She stated, confused why they were closing the entrance.

"Oh-no. I'm going to be late." The boy cried out and soon he was walking faster.

She quickly tried to catch up with him and was confused why he seemed so panicked,

"Why are you so worried?"

He was already breathing heavily,

"Because if I'm late I'll get in trouble."

"By whom?"

"The teachers. They'll give me detention. An-And if I get detention the-then they'll be there."

She was lost,

"What's detention? Who's they? Those boys from earlier?"

He didn't bother answering her question, his thoughts once again in a frenzy as he pictured what would happen if he was late. Seeing his frightened look, she grabbed his hand,

"Well then lets hurry."

She began to sprint towards the gates, diving into the feeling of running. The wind, the stretching of her legs, everything about it made her feel alive and she was somewhat sad when she came to a stop, already at the gates. With a smile on her face, she totally forgot about the boy and she turned to the side to see him doubling over their hands still connected.

"I-ho-I ca-can't breath." Was all the boy could manage.

She just patted him on the back before straightening him up,

"Don't bend over, it's best to stretch to allow the air to circulate."

He did what she said and soon he could feel his lungs fill with air. He almost had a heart attack when she suddenly started running. He didn't run, scratch that, he couldn't run and that feeling was, well at the moment, horrible.

"Why didn't you warn me?"

He coughed and she shrugged,

"You said you were going to be late."

He didn't know how to respond to that so he slapped his mouth shut. After a couple seconds of just standing there, he finally gave a nod letting go of her hand,

"Well, um I-I got to go."

"Thanks for um walking with me."

She smiled,

"No problem. I hope to see you again."

He was a bit shocked by that and he felt his cheeks heat up,

"Me-me too." He said softly and she patted his head,

"Have fun."

With that she jogged off leaving the boy to just gape.

A few meters away she turned and watched the boy with curiousity. She watched as he straightened up and gave a tug to his uniform. She watched as he went through the gates and was soon covered by the sea of students. A bit disappointed that she couldn't see him anymore, she turned, going back down the street. Knowing that she shouldn't have left the forest and would probably get a scolding, she made her way back as fast as she could. Well that is until she was stopped by a person yelling things and giving things to people. She tilted her head curious,

"Three for One Special! Buy three packs of beauty care products and get a gift basket free!!"

As the girl shouted, she made her way towards her, stopping when she was right in front of the young lady.

"Three for One-" She cut herself off when she ly to almost to colide with the girl standing right there.

"Ommo, geez you scared me. Don't stand so close." She hissed in shock.

The girl listened, taking a step back, her eyes never leaving the young lady.

"What is your name?" The lady asked giving the girl in front of her a once over,

"Me? My name is Jae."

She replied fond of her new name.

"Well Jae, here." The lady said, shoving the paper into the girls hands.

She just looked at it before looking back up at the lady

"What is this?"

"A coupon." The lady stated rolling her eyes.

She didn't know what that was and she examined it.

"A coupon?"

"It means you get a deal with any purchase you get." She pointed into the shop and the girl followed her finger looking at the shop in awe.

"In there?" She asked looking through the glass.

"Yep." The lady clicked her tounge, soon bored, and she quickly turned going back to yelling and handing out flyers.

She just looked at the girl who was back to her routine of shouts and handouts, then the paper, before looking to the building. Not seeming any harm in taking a look, she walked up to the store. Taking her hand and placing it on the glass, she pushed the door open and was greeted with cool air and the sound of a bell.

"Welcome to our shop." She heard someone say and turned to see a young man standing there in a uniform, which she thought resemebled the one that people wore to school, giving her a smile.

"Thank you." She said smiling back before walking around the store.

Around she went, taking curious steps and touching everything. One by one, she picked up the products, not knowing what anything was, but very much intrigued by all the bright colors and patterns. Suddenly, she felt a tap on her shoulder and she turned, this time to see an older woman.

"Hello young lady. Any specific product you're looking for?"

She just shook her head,

"Well if you need any help, feel free to let me know."

She shook her head again and watched as the woman walked away, going to another customer. Once again walking around, she felt her nose twitch and she looked around for the source. Walking towards a table were many tubes laid, she picked one up, examining it. Shaking it, she could tell there was something inside it, but didn't understand how to get to it. She then began to hit it and hitting the top, something came spraying out. Immediatly the stench hit her and she began to sneeze. Her face scrunched up with disgusted, tasting weird, and she put the container back, wipping her nose with the back of her hand.

Gross

She walked away, her nose still bothering her. Looking up, she found the same young man who had greeted her early now walking up to her.

"Not your scent huh?" He laughed, handing her a cup and she just looked down at it confused.

Seeing her confusion he quickly added,

"It's coffee beans. They're supposed to help clear your sinuses."

She just nodded before hesitently putting her nose towards it. Enhaling, she was surprised that she could suddenly breath again,

"Woah, I can breath again." She stated taking another wiff of the nice scent.

Again he laughed and she looked up to see him watching her.

"I haven't seen you before. Are you knew to the area?"

She didn't want to say she has lived here for the past houndred years and she technically had never been in the city so she nodded,

"I guess so."

He nooded,

"That's cool. May I ask, what your name is?"

"Jae."

She watched as he smiled,

"Jae, that's pretty."

"Thanks." She said, she didn't know what pretty ment, but she thought it was something good since he was smiling.

Pointing to his name tag he said,

"My name is Suho."

"Nice to meet you Suho." She gave a light bow to him.

She liked his name.

"If- If you need someone to ever show around town, I could help. I grew up here. so I know where practically everything is." He blured out, scratching the back of his neck.

She smiled,

"Really? Thanks that would be cool."

"I know I'm not supposed to do this but..." He began shuffling through his apron pulling out a pen before taking the poster from her hand.

Turning it over, she watched him scribble something onto it before handing it back to her.

"This is my name and number. Anytime your free, let me know and I'll show you around."

She looked down at the paper in her hands fascinated before looking back at the boy,

"Thanks."

"Suho- I need help, can you come here?"

She watched as the boy turned, yelling back to the person, before turning back to her,

"Well that's my cue. It was nice meeting you Jae. Hope to get your call soon."

She nodded and with that he walked off leaving her.

Again she looked at the paper, then to the boy, back to her paper.

What is a number? And how do I call?

Tilting her head to the side, she just shrugged, telling herself she would figure out later. Knowing that it was time to head home, she walked out the store, walking back down the street. Stopping, she took one last look at the store before smiling,

Such an interesting place

And with that she made her way back to the forest.
