Chasing Summer

"Yay!" she exclaimed as Dongwoon popped open a bottle of champagne. It was only three months away from the wedding now, and Summer's brother thought it was time the company heard of their engagement formally. And then later tonight, the business world would, too.

Before any of the golden sparkling drink spilled on the floor, Summer quickly got the champagne glasses off the table and under the nozzle of the bottle so it all went there.

They passed glasses around to people within the office. Of course, the bottle Dongwoon opened was only for them, and the family. They had waiters on hand giving drinks to other people whilst bringing food around. This was no joking matter at all; they would certainly have had it catered. Or rather, Eli had it catered.

Every staff member of her floor was present, and once they announced the news, they celebrated. Everyone was happy, well, almost everyone.

"My little sissy's getting married!!" Eli said, and approached the couple. He pinched his sister's cheek and she shook him off, giving him a glared to which he only stuck his tongue out at.

Dongwoon laughed, drawing Summer back to his side. This, Eli noticed.

"You guys aren't even married, yet you're so protective of her already." Eli told Dongwoon thoughtfully.

"And I have every right to be protective. Don't I, Eli?" Dongwoon teased, but carefully Eli scanned the premises. And he saw Jiyong picking away at a piece of shrimp [cocktail] on one of the tables with a few other co-workers. Dongwoon didn't notice.

Eli laughed awkwardly, "heh heh," and quickly added "Whatever, future-little-brother. Just take good care of my sister." He said on a more serious note.

Summer rolled her eyes, but Dongwoon only smiled. "You wouldn't need to tell me twice," He said, and put a hand on Summer's waist, which unexplainably gave her a fluttery sensation in her stomach.

"Good." Eli spoke, "--anyway, I have to go check out some stuff for dad. See you tonight," Eli raised his glass at them, then turned to leave, leaving Summer and Dongwoon looking at his departing.

"Speaking of tonight, do you need to get anything ready?" Dongwoon asked her, knowing very well that tonight's event was more than just an engagement party. It was also their debut to the business world---but simply put, it was both their parents' way of showing them off to everyone who knew them. A whole load of pressure was put on them tonight. It was nerve-wrecking.

She shook her head, "No, I'm good. What about you?"

"I have to pick up my suit after this. Help me get out?" He asked her, all coy.

"You don't even have to ask," She told him, and wove her fingers through his, to add the finishing touched of them looking like the best couple Seoul has ever seen since Summer's own sister got married.

But as they were entertaining a whole bunch of other people, congratulating them for their wedding, she saw from afar a man in a suit with the most impassive looking face she had ever seen. She looked away from him, because that was all she could do.

-----

Engagement party, engagement party. Right now was their engagement party and neither Dongwoon nor Summer had anything this big arranged for them. They could only imagine how big their wedding would be; hopefully not as big, she still thought.

She was in an Armani evening gown, strapless and black which hugged her body just right, and he was in a Hugo Boss tux, black as well, and it fit him to a tee. They both looked so perfect. It was supposed to be a casual evening, a place where they get acquainted with the people their parents knew.

Their parents were a little away from them but then they came, and finally the two were able to sneak off; and off to the dance floor they went.

Some jazz song was playing, and all they did was sway to the beat. And as they moved, she caught a glimpse of Jiyong looking right at her.

It wasn't fair at all, she thought. But who told him to come?? she mentally asked herself.

From across the room, her heart was silently breaking. Jiyong was here, and inwardly she yelled. This was shoving it in his face. There was nothing great about this. Jiyong being here was like being trapped in a den full of lions. Him being here just proved to both of them that they don't belong in the same world, that they don't belong to each other. And it was much more than they both could take. Him being here is a big fat no written by the cosmic powers of the universe.

Yet here on the dance floor, being spun around by Dongwoon, she's never felt so elated and relieved. For the past few months they've been drowning in wedding preparations and the only time she was ever able to feel comfortable was with Dongwoon. She was actually having a good time. She was so thankful for him, but she just didn't know. How could you love two people at the same time?

Would you consider this cheating? She thought.

A look must have crossed her face because the next thing Dongwoon did was ask her a question. "Are you okay?"

She suddenly zoned out of her thoughts. "Huh? Yeah, I am. Why do you ask?" She said, looking into his eyes. And he smiled that smile she found extremely adorable.

"You've been awfully quiet," he replied to her, while gently coaxing her to a stop because apparently someone got on stage. And by someone, that was her brother.

"Good evening everyone," Eli spoke into the mic.

"What's your brother doing?" Dongwoon asked her amusedly.

She gave a scrutinizing look at her brother then replied. "I don't know, but I have a feeling it's got something to do with me," And with that, she was right.

"Tonight is a mile stone for my dear sister, Summer, and her soon-to-be-husband, Son Dongwoon. So thank you all for coming," He said, and everyone either clinked their glasses or gave a round of applause. Eli only spoke when the cheers were quieting down.

"But to my parent's, I know that today is more than just the engagement of your baby girl. I'm not really sure why you chose tonight for them, but it's perfect because it gives an excuse for your songbird to sing on stage once again, right?" Eli said, and Summer's dad, who was now seated at his table, with the Sons and a few other people let out a laugh while his wife started clapping her hands.

"What?" Dongwoon asked, while Summer's jaw dropped.

"I'd like to call Summer to the stage, but before she takes the spotlight away, because she always does," And everyone laughed. The Eli continued. "I just want to say, Happy Anniversary, mom and dad." And a wave of cheers and applause erupted again, but this time for the older Park coupled.

"Oh, you didn't tell me it was your parents' anniversary." Dongwoon said, and still Summer was in a state of shock. She immediately closed , and showed her famous smile, just before the spotlight both of them.

"Excuse me," she told Dongwoon as everyone's eyes turned to them; and she found her way on stage. Of course Eli would do this. And she made a mental note to stab her brother later. She knew it was a big day for her parents' too, but she never planned on singing. This was crazy. Sadly, she couldn't say no now.

Dongwoon found his way to the table of their parents and sat down, an amused look on his face, eagerly waiting for what she'd do next. He knew her well enough to know that she didn't want to do this at all, so he watched.

"Uhm, hi. Good evening everyone, I hope you're all having a great time. And thank you so much for coming." She began.

"Just a few nights ago I was looking through some old videos, and somehow I came across the wedding tape of my mom and dad. And when I watched them, I never saw two people more in love. I've never seen Dad look that way at anyone else other than mom, and I see now, that after all these years, he still looks at her with that look everyday." And surprisingly, the sound of teasing filled the air and she saw that the one's doing the teasing were the friends of her parents. She couldn't help but laugh.

But then she continued, "Then I thought, I hope I find someone who'd look at me like that in the same way, too. And now, I think I did find that person." She left that statement vague. Everyone thought they were talking about Dongwoon, but she wasn't sure who she was talking about. She just liked the way it sounded.

"Anyway, I know I'm here to sing, not thanks to my brother Eli," They all laughed.

"I haven't really prepared for this, but I hope you enjoy it nonetheless. Happy anniversary, mom and dad." She moved over to the band, and after a few moments, they started playing.

"Some day, when I'm awfully low," She began,

"When the world is cold, I will feel a glow just thinking of you and the way you look tonight."

Dongwoon was at the table, admiring his fiance from where she was. He knew, most probably that, the person she was referring to wasn't truly him. But that only motivated him to do all he could. They've only known each other a while, but he knew all he wanted was her, and her happiness. How could you fall in love with someone in such a short time?

"I didn't know she could sing so well," his mom said.

"She loves singing, we just never managed to get her to sing on stage; tonight's a miracle," Summer's mom said, and Dongwoon just smiled a sort of wary smile.

Dongwoon was only looking at Summer, listening to her voice. He seemed as though he were in a trance.

"Lovely, never, ever change." She sang,

"Keep that breathless charm. Won't you please arrange it? Cause I love you, just the way you look tonight. " And Dongwoon couldn't help but blush, because somehow, she was looking at him; and she winked at him. He let out a short laugh.

"It seems as though she's caught you on a hook, Woonie." Summer's mom told him, and his mom laughed.

"It seems so," he replied, charmingly.

He saw Summer's dad just watching the performance, and he didn't know how, but he could tell that despite his happiness in having found a suitable match, because indeed Dongwoon was suitable, he still found it a little difficult because this was his little girl, who wasn't going to be his little girl any longer.

Dongwoon thought that if he had a daughter, no matter how much he'd like her future fiance, he'd still feel sad knowing that she'd no longer be just his baby girl anymore.

So he said, "I think I could be the one to make her happy," Which only caused gushing from the mom's. But in that short moment, he and her dad made a short but clear connection and from the corner of his eye, he could see, her dad was finally, if not a little bit, at ease.

The last line of the song was coming, and Jiyong knew, he no longer had a place in her life. It's been quite some time since they fought. And they haven't spoken to each other since. She made her choice, now he's making his.

I guess it's time to leave, he thought. He'd be out of her life for good now.

Before he exited the door, he turned to sneak one last look of her. But he saw, she was looking at him, too. Congratulations, he spoke the word in his mind, but he didn't feel happy at all. He gave a sad smile, then turned to leave.

She felt a pang of guilt as she saw him leave. In all her life, she never thought she'd see him leave.

"Just the way you look, tonight."
