What's A Mary Sue?
FG Guide To: Apply Fics
What's A Mary-Sue?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
OK mary-sues are SUCH A BIG PROBLEM on AFF its insane. On other sites (Like fanfiction.net)
you will get super hardcore bashed if you have one in your story and people
won't read it and will flame you. Here it is generally accepted in peoples fics, and even praised.
I have noticed Mary-Sue OC's actually get more comments and subs while realistic characters
do not generally get the same amount of lovin' (I think its because of the delusional fangirls).
So What Exactly Makes A Mary-Sue?
Everyone loves her
Her life is perfect
She is talented in pretty much everything
She is super pretty
All the guys love/have a crush on her
The 'popular' girl is her only enemy
She only has one flaw, which is typically something really
stupid and unorginal (She gets pregnant, Cancer, BF cheats etc.)
Everyone constantly says how pretty/talented/lucky/etc. she is
Is constantly the hero and 'saving the day'
She's super sweet and isn't mean to anyone
Has a super tragic past that in no way could possibly happen (Remeber pasts also reflect one's personality)
There is something 'unusual' or 'unnatural' about her
NEVER EVER have any resemblance to yourself, simple things like your birthday is OK but don't base them off of all you. (Plus you'll get butthurt when you're not picked)
Having a name that doesn't suit their background (Ex. Their name is Samantha even though they have never left Korea)
Helps everyone
She has no real development throughout the story she just stays the same (Picture: Bella Swan nuff' said)
Is fluent/knows multiple languages.
Flaws That Just Because She Has Doesn't Mean She Isn't A Mary-Sue
Abbusive parents/boyfriend/sibling etc.
Substance Abuse
Has a eating disorder
Her bf cheated on her
Gets cancer or some overly-done disease
Is dimwitted/slow/challenged
Allergic to nuts or some other popular allergy
She was/is bullied
Abbusive parents/boyfriend/sibling etc.
WAIT! That sounds like my character!
Congrats she's a Mary-Sue.
Congrats she's a Mary-Sue.
But Everyone Loves Her! My Subscribers Say She's The Best!
Congrats their delusional and clearly know nothing about a well rounded character... Or you just have
a good plot and that's the only reason their reading (I'm subbed to a few of those, truthfully it's a bit painful).
If You Are Writing: If someone gives you a Mary-Sue when you review bash the hell out of them (or just put 'declined because mary-sue/too perfect, Fix it') it sounds mean but it will get your point across to them and other applyers that you mean buisness and won't deal with their . (I for sure won't)
If You Are Applying: Follow those rules and also ask yourself how many flaws she/he has, no one is perfect and try and stay realistic. I don't care if you want a perfect character that just doesn't make an interesting story, give her some flaws, tweak her personality make her interesting and stand out!
BTW a male Mary-Sue is called a Gary-Stu and yes their just as bad
