[27] Hospitalized

MY PING PONG BOY

Chp.27| Hospitalized

Moments after Jung Sang collapsed;
I had rushed him to the hospital, called on his parents and asked my cousin to take care of Tae Woo. Turns out that the doc couldn’t do anything to revive him. All the information I got came from his parents. Mr. Park informed me that Jung Sang needed his rest and that eventually he would wake up again.

My nerves were really shaky at that point. I lost my voice from my crying and there was nothing I could do but sit back and watched. The situation had to be the worst that happened in my life up to that point.

“I’m sorry. He won’t wake up anytime soon,” the doc stated despairingly the next day we visited the hospital.

Yoon Tae stood beside me; I leaned into him for support, feeling my legs giving out on me. Why did I get the feeling my life was turning into some kind of sappy drama?

Was this Lee Ji Won’s cue to fall onto her knees and cry her eyes out while begging the heavens for mercy---or should she just go and jump off the roof and kill herself to end her misery? I quickly shook away my irrational thoughts, thinking that my life was too important to allow any of that to happen.

Yoon Tae blurted, “You mean, he’s under a coma?”

The doctor lowered his eyes in shame. “Yes, I’m very sorry---"

I rushed into the room before the doctor could finish explaining. There I saw Jung Sang still resting peacefully on the hospital bed. Remember how I said Jung Sang looked good even when he was sleeping? It’s the truth. He sleeps like an angel. I approached him with slow dragging steps, allowing the truth to sink in. I began to wonder just how long I would have to wait to hear his voice again. “You have to wake up Jung Sang,” I muttered, through my endless fall of tears.

I reached out and intertwined my fingers with his. “Wake up, Jung Sang. Or else I’m gonna have to break up with you.”

His fingers twitched in response. I let out a surprised gasp and looked to his face to see that he was smirking with his eyes shut. Then his hand suddenly shot out to smack the side of my head. “Yah! I don’t have any terminal disease. Why are you acting like I’m dying?” he grumbled.

With that, he opened his eyes wide, staring up at the ceiling.

The knot in my stomach had loosened. I blinked twice and rubbed my eyes just to make sure I wasn’t just seeing things. “You’re awake?”

He lifted his head two inches from his pillow while gazing around the room. “I’m in a in’ hospital!”

I was still appalled by Jung Sang’s waking presence. The doctor was so very wrong about Jung Sang being under a coma. How could the doctor been wrong about it? “You’re awake!” I shouted happily.

His brows furrowed together as he sat upright. “What? Does it look like I’m sleeping?” Having said that, he tore all of his IVs off and made an attempt to get off the bed but I threw my arms around him and held him close.

“I was so scared that you might never wake up again.”

“Idiot. What makes you think that I’d sleep forever?”

I pulled back, gazing into his penetrating eyes. “The doctor mentioned---"

Yoon Tae rushed into the room and blurted, “Ji Won. The doc made a mistake. He thought we had something to do with the patient next door so he spoke to the wrong people!”

I looked from my cousin to Jung Sang who was cursing and swearing at his appearance. “I’m wearing a in’ hospital gown!”

I ignored him and turned my full attention back onto my cousin. “Really? So—so—so it had nothing to do with Jung Sang falling under a coma?”

“No, it doesn’t.”

Throwing my arms around Yoon Tae, I yelled out, “That’s great news! I’m so happy!!!” I pulled away and gripped onto his jacket when I thought about the stupid mistake the doctor had made. “That stupid doctor. How could he do this to us?”

“Ji Won, my jacket. Ji Won, watch my jacket!” Yoon Tae said, pushing me back.

“YAH!!” Jung Sang yelled.

I spun around to see that he was poking his head out the door. “Which one of you nurses is responsible for me? Where are my in’ clothes?!!”

Yoon Tae who was also looking at Jung Sang whistled at him. “Nice set of legs you have on you.”

Jung Sang whirled around and retorted, “All the better to kick your with.”

Yoon Tae smirked. “Looks like you’re feeling better.”

“Who says I was feeling like crap?”

Yoon Tae folded his arms in front of him. “I heard you had a little too much to drink. You took in more than your body could handle. You can’t drink for sh*t and that’s a fact that has been proven. Otherwise, you wouldn’t be here.”

That made me curious. If he knew he couldn’t handle the alcohol, why did he drink in the first place?

Jung Sang turned his head away to hide his embarrassment. “Whatever.”

The situation was wrong. Jung Sang had wakened up from his slumber and I was just standing there watching, when I should be putting a stop to their bickering and unraveling the story behind Tae Woo and him.

“That’s it, isn’t it? Alcohol is your weakness,” Yoon Tae said. He smacked himself on the forehead. “And all along I thought you were invincible!”

So did I, Yoon Tae. But unfortunately my pingpongboy has many flaws.

“You know what they say, a man isn’t a man if he can’t drink,” my cousin remarked.

Jung Sang stepped closer to Yoon Tae and I could already sense the tension forming between them. “They also say that a man isn’t a man without his balls.”

Having enough of Yoon Tae’s snide remarks, I reached out and twisted his ear. “Yah! Are you done?”

“Aish! Let go. It hurts!” Yoon Tae wailed as he pulled away from me.

“Why are you always picking on Jung Sang?” I asked him.

“I’m not,” he defended himself.

“Leave the room. I need to talk to Jung Sang.”

Sparing a glance at Jung Sang, he said, “Fine.”

When he strode past Jung Sang, he paused to say something before heading for the door.

Jung Sang called over his shoulder. “Yeah, and I hope the door hits you on your way out.”

And it did. Yoon Tae doubled over from the impact that collided into him. “Sh*t!”

Na-Na appeared from behind the door with her hair looking like a bird’s nest and rushed over to her uncle, throwing her arms around him. “Jung Sang. You’re awake. How are you feeling?”

Yoon Tae pointed accusingly at Na-Na and looked over to me in question.

Jung Sang reached down and tucked a wisp of hair behind her ear. “I’m fine. How did you get here? And why is your hair so messy?”

“I came here with Lee Jin Hyung and I got my hair pulled that’s why it’s so messy.”

At the mentioned of my brother’s name, I hurried over to them. “Where is he? Is he here?”

Na-Na nodded. “Yeah, he’s here. One of the nurses stole him though. She says she has to fix him up.”

“Fix him up?” Both Jung Sang and I blurted.

“We got into a fight.”

That would explain the bird nest on Na-Na’s head. I really didn’t want to know what went on with the two. I reckoned the brat got his kicked by Na-Na.

Jung Sang chuckled amusingly. “You kicked his sorry ?”

I glared up at him. “What?” he asked.

“No. It wasn’t like that. We got into a fight with some bullies. These older bullies were picking on me after school and that’s when Jin Hyung showed up trying to scare them away but…but they ended up beating him up instead. And then he cried, so they called him a wimp. And they wanted to corner him and kick him but then I stepped up to them.” She looked up to her uncle. “I did what you taught me, Jung Sang. I kicked the guy in his balls and then I pulled down his pants. When the other guy tried to attack me, I hit him hard with my bag and then I kicked him there too. And when the other guy tried to grab me from behind, I did that Judo move you taught me and tossed him over my shoulder. It was fun.” She sighed. “Meanwhile all Jin Hyung did was bawl his eyes out.”

I knew it. That kid was good at nothing other than crying. Instead of standing up for Na-Na, he reversed the scene to make himself look like the wimp. Gosh, my mother was really going to kill me once we get home.

Someone was laughing in the background. I turned to see that it was Yoon Tae was still standing there, holding onto his nose. “I’ll go look for the kid.” With that, he left the room.

Na-Na smiled up at the both of us and said, “I’ll go show him the way.”

Once she left the room, I exhaled slowly and turned back to confront Jung Sang. “We need to talk.”

“About what?” he questioned, touching the arm with the cast.

“About---"

There was a knock on the door and Jung Sang strode over to open it. The nurse greeted him and then handed him his clothes. Jung Sang said a few words and then rudely shut the door on her. With his back me, he pulled on his jeans and yanked off the hospital gown. I couldn’t help but stare at his back. Basically, I was caught in the moment. He had broad shoulders, strong arms and a very nice back. All those sports he played must have paid off.

“Jung Sang,” I called out, only because I felt like it.

He was in the process of pulling his polo shirt on when he half-turned to me with a puzzled expression. “What?”

My breath was caught in my throat. Shirtless Jung Sang is very hot. I felt even luckier knowing that Jung Sang was not only handsome but beneath his clothes, he has a very toned and athletic physique.

Now, now, Ji Won. Don’t make him think you have a naughty mind. At least pretend to be surprised!

I quickly covered my eyes. “Are you stupid. Why are you changing in front of me?”

After pulling his shirt on, he said, “Whatever. I know you were staring.”

I flustered in front of him. “I wasn’t.”

When he opened his mouth to speak, the door flung swung inward. Shin Hye Min stood there, holding onto a gift basket. “Oppa,” she called.

I rolled my eyes, disliking the disruptions.

He half-turned to her. “What are you doing here, Hye Min?”

She strode forward, acting as if I didn’t exist and extended her arms towards him. Jung Sang stood there looking at her before grabbing for my arm and pulling me close to him.

Hye Min’s jaws dropped along with her arms. “Oppa, please don’t do this to me.”

“Do what? Can’t I hold onto my girlfriend?” he asked her.

Jung Sang admitted that I was his girlfriend to his ex. Should I feel special?

“You’re trying to make me jealous,” Hye Min stated.

It’s a possibility that Hye Min could be right.

Jung Sang squeezed me and then gave me a peck on the cheek. “Ji Won, I’m hungry. Let’s get out of here and get something to eat.”

I was more taken aback by the peck on the cheek. “Uhh…” I quickly turned my head to say, “Maybe, we could---?

He gave me another quick kiss. This time, it was on the forehead. I blinked twice and then turned to see that Hye Min had dropped her gift basket and ran out crying. She even slipped once before disappearing and I couldn't help but laugh.

The moment she was out of sight, I realized that Jung Sang kisses were intentional. Immediately, I broke from his grasp. “I’m not your toy, Jung Sang!”

“No, you’re not,” he agreed.

“I’m your girlfriend.”

“And why can’t I kiss my girlfriend?”

“You did that to piss her off?”

“What’s wrong with that?”

“You didn’t really want to kiss me. You did that so she could flee the room.”

“I wanted to kiss you to piss her off. I don’t see anything wrong with that.”

Not knowing what else to say back to him, I said, “I’m not your toy, Jung Sang!”

“You said it first, not me,” he argued. “And if we continue to argue like this, we’ll go in circles. So let’s just get out of here and then argue some more. I hate hospitals. This place makes me sick.”

“Fine. Let’s go.”

Jung Sang walked off first.

“Jung Sang!” I shouted.

He stopped to look over his shoulder. “What?”

“Wait for me,” I muttered, hurrying over to his side and hooking my arm around his. “Aren’t you planning to take your cast off first?”

“Yes.”

“Can we go to get some ice-cream once we get out of here?”

“Yes…”

"Are you mad at me?"

"No."

"Can we not argue once we get out of here?"

"Okay."

"Can I tell you---"

"Ji Won. Can you shut your mouth? My head hurts from listening to your scratchy voice."

"Okay."
