The Blue Moon

Blue Moon

Meanwhile, else where, on a young planet called Earth, a young Caucasian girl with dark brown hair and glasses was pushing her way through the TV Station’s Office. She was carrying various coffees and breakfast sandwiches. She huffed as she made it to the empty table and plopped down all the objects she was carrying.
“Liaden! Perfect timing!” A man called to her patting her back. “We’re going to start shooting in a bit, Cristiana was wondering where her frappe was.” The man leaned closer to her and whispered in her ear, “You know how she gets if she doesn’t have caffeine in the morning.” He backed away and chuckled.
Liaden rolled her eyes, she heard that every morning since the day she began working there.
“Anyways, you better be getting it to her.” The older man nudged her before grabbing a coffee of his own and a free donut.
Liaden sighed as she did what she was told. She made her way towards the podium where the reporters would sit. There was a beautiful girl barely older than Liaden, in her early 20s.
“Liaden! There you are!” The girl tried to sound excited to see Liaden, but was only excited for her drink. She quickly snatched it up without and thanks and went back to her work.
Liaden turned around and went to her own station where an old gentleman was working on paperwork. “Good morning Mr. Lockhart.”
He chuckled lightly, “Good morning Liaden, and how many time did have to tell you to call me Jack.”
Liaden just smiled at him before joining him in the workspace. “What are you looking at today?” She couldn’t help but ask.
Across the table, diagrams and maps were scattered all around. Some were crumpled while others laid flat.
“AH!” He began as a smile appeared on his face, “The stars are on the move again.” He laughed.
Liaden placed her elbows on the table before resting her head in her arms to listen. She had always loved the stars and the sky. She dreamed of becoming an astronomer but at such a young age, this was the closest she could get.
She worked everyday at the News Station helping out Jack. He was their current astronomer who would inform them of interesting things that was happening in space, however, people didn’t care as much as they used to, and he faded into the background.
She seemed to follow his route. Instead of being able to announce anything exciting, she was often used to run errands. However, she had a feeling her chance to shine would come soon.
“You see,” Jack was point to a map of the stars. “Every two or three years, something magical happens.” He smiled, “You see, since there are roughly 29.53 days in a lunar cycle and 365.25 days in a solar year, there are only 12.37 lunar cycles in a solar year.” He looked up to see if Liaden was following along before continuing, “That means every two or three years, there’s an full moon. When that happens, that given season has four full moons instead of three. The third full moon in the four full moon season is known as a Blue Moon and it is truly beautiful.” The older man smiled as he recalled his past when he got to see it several times.
“It must be beautiful.” Liaden added with a smile, she couldn’t wait to see it.
The Blue Moon was going to be in a matter of days, and Liaden was overly excited about it. She counted down each day on her calendar, and had the whole day planned for it.  She had a telescope ready to see it, and constantly checked the weather to make sure nothing would ruin it.
The only thing that could ruin it was work. Though she didn’t have to work during that time period, Christina was so ignorant on the matter, that when she announced it to the public, no one understood what she was talking about.
Though she was beautiful and had great presence in front of the camera, she was an idiot. Liaden couldn’t help but feel frustrated by it. If only she had the chance.

A few days pasted, and it was time for the Blue Moon so shine.  Early in the morning, Christina once again tried to explain the phenomenon with little improvement. The crew knew they couldn’t air it, with such lacking information and needed to find another way to get the word across. They turned to Jack Lockhart, but because of his old age, he wasn’t fit to be on the TV, not only that, but he could barely hear when the cameraman cued him to start. Overall. it was a mess.  Their last hope was Liaden.
They quickly turned to her and got hair and make-up done on her. Her clothes needed a lot of work, but they didn’t have time for it. The director quickly explained what she had to do. “All you need to do is look at the camera and explain what is going on tonight with this Blue Moon. After that, just point to your side,” He did the gesture, “and we will put a picture of the Blue Moon there.” He paused and looked at her, “Do you understand?” She nodded, she was focused and ready.
“Action!” He called as the film began to roll.
“Hello, I’m Liaden McClain and I am here to inform you about the unusual phenomenon happening in the sky tonight.” She paused before continuing, “If you take a look out your window tonight and glanced up at the Moon, you will be able to is it in the rare color blue. This Moon is called a Blue Moon and it only happens every 2 to 3 years.” She continued to explain all she had learned from Jack before doing the gesture the director her told her to do. “I hope everyone has a chance to see this rare sighting.” She ended with a smile before she was cut off.
“I guess that would have to do.” The director settled, “Good job.” He patted her shoulder, before he went to record the rest of the news.
Liaden let out a big sigh. It was her first time doing anything like that, and she couldn’t help but feel proud of herself. She smiled as she made her way back to Jack to learn more about the stars.

Night came and Liaden was all set to see the beautiful moon. She had a fancy Camera in case she got the chance to get the perfect picture so she could remember it forever.  As the Moon shone brightly in the sky she could help but open in awe of it. Her eyes were glued to it, until she felt a giant shake. The ground shook around her, but she couldn’t understand why. It stopped as quickly as if had come.
For that moment, she didn’t think much of it. She looked back up in the sky to see the beautiful Blue Moon, only it wasn’t there. Clouds blocked her view. Her view quickly changed as she couldn’t help but notice something falling from the sky. It looked like a shouting star.
Soon more followed, it seemed to her that it was a meteor show, however, there was nothing in the logs that this would be happening. Jack and herself checked every day, but there was no sign. She started at it with curiosity as counted the meteors that fell to earth, “1…2…3…” she began, “ 9…10…11…12” They stopped after 12. She continued to stare at the sky with curiosity as the strange clouds that covered the moon faded away and showed that beautiful Blue Moon once more.
