Performance & Near Death

Cupid's Bachelors

“So Tae, what’s your favorite kind of music?” Jonghyun asked with a grin as he leaned against his arm that had been prepped on the table.

That’s how the conversation had been for the past few minutes; all questions were aimed at me or were for Mr. Lee concerning the fact that I was ‘disguised’ as a guy. Seriously, did I have such a pretty face like my cousin that could be mistaken for a girl? Apparently I did. A sigh escaped my lips and I gave a simple shrug, my legs crossed underneath the table as all eyes were on me again.

“Any kind really, as long as I like the beat to it and if it makes me want to dance, even better,” I explained absentmindedly when the thoughts of my previous obsession with dance came back.

“You like to dance?” I heard Onew ask and I turned to give him a glance.

I smiled and tilted my head to side nodding and noticed that his cheeks turned a slight red, but before I could ask if anything was wrong a sudden bang from the stage. All eyes quickly moved to the source wondering what was happening, but then I noticed the grin on Mr. Lee’s face. I raised an eyebrow towards the man whom simply sent me a wink.

If I didn’t think the man was insane and conniving before, I did now. Before I could even utter a word from my mind, a sudden voice came over the speakers.

“How are you ladies and germs?!”

A roar of screams and laughter roared from around us; then I remembered it was a performing night for the café. Again, my attention turned to Mr. Lee who was moved to stand up. I went to follow, but found a hand on my wrist. I turned to see it belonged to Cupid who shook his head. I frowned, but sat down and followed Mr. Lee with my eyes. I was cursing the old man for leaving me here alone.

“Well I hope tonight you enjoy the show and we also hope that our special guests do as well, neh Bachelors!” announced the MC and people began to get louder.

I sunk farther into my seat as I tried to practically disappear from sight. I could hear the barely audible chuckle from Cupid and I swore my face turned red. I crossed my arms and turned my attention back to the stage as music began to play. Slowly, I began to bob my head to the beat and watched as a few people began to dance around us and those who were brave enough, or stupid, got up on stage.

Soon enough I began to move my upper body to the beat and clap my hands with the rest of the crowd as I watched the few souls who dared to go up on stage to dance or sing. I laughed at a few of the acts, but cheered for most of them. I simply forgot about the other men around the table as I indulged myself into the entertaining performances.

Suddenly, Mr. Lee appeared beside me causing me to jump and bump into Cupid. I turned and bowed as I excused myself before sending a glare at my boss who simply grinned at me. He reached forward and grasped my wrist before tugging me out of the booth and towards the back of the kitchen again. I could fear the muffle complaints from behind me, but didn’t really understand what was spoken.

When I was pushed into the kitchen I blinked for a second before turning to my boss again dumbfounded.

“What was that?!”

“What was what?” he asked innocently.

“Why the hell did you tell them I was a girl?”

“Do you really want to say you’re a guy in girl clothing?” he asked.

I opened my mouth but quickly closed it and it earned a laugh from Mr. Lee. Yeah, I wasn’t about to humiliate myself in front of a few strangers stating I’m a boy in girl clothing. I then recalled that the man abandoned me at the table.

“What about leaving me at the table by myself?!”

“Well I had to talk to the MC and DJ for a bit,” Mr. Lee confessed.

“Why?” I asked, not liking the glint in his eyes.

Mr. Lee simply shrugged his shoulders before telling me that I would be performing.  I stared at the old man in front of me as my mind registered the news slowly.

“WHAT?!”

My boss grinned and patted my shoulders.

“You want to keep your job right?” he asked.

“B-but, but!”

“No buts, I’m the boss and what I say goes. Besides, I’m sure you’ll do fine after all you are Heechul’s cousin,” Mr. Lee stated.

I stared at the man’s retreating back in pure confusion, disbelief and panic. I had to wonder what my cousin had to do with all this mess, but at the moment I was hyperventilating over the fact that I was performing. Not just that, but as a girl in a skirt! I simply stood there in shock and I didn’t know for how long. I only snapped out of it when Mr. Lee came back to drag me out for the performance.

“You know any girl group songs?”

“W-what?” I asked completely out of it for a second, I was thanking the forces above it was dark in the café.

I swore this place was more like a night club than a café now.

“Girl songs like Gee? You want to dance something masculine as a girl and in a skirt?” Mr. Lee clarified.

I groaned at the realization before muttering a song title. Mr. Lee grinned before head to the MC who nodded and I figured passed the words to the DJ. I whined as I saw my boss walk over again. He patted my back before shoving me towards the stage just as the MC began to introduce the following act.

“Audience we have a small treat for you! The manager of this establishment has asked for a performance that none of you will forget! Please give it up for the wonderful and stunning, Tae!”

The audience seemed confused, but cheered. I glanced over towards the Bachelor table and they seemed to be on their feet all surprised, but eager. I let out a whine again as I slowly made my way onto the stage and the cheering began to get louder. I cursed at myself for getting involved in all this mess; why couldn’t I have a simple life?

“She will be dancing…Drum Role please!” called the DJ and people began to hit the floor or tables around the café.

Soon enough, the song began to play once I got into position with my hands on my hips. I heard gasps as people figured out and recognized the song I would be dancing to. Once the beat began however, I lost myself and my body began to move on its own and memory. I thanked Heechul for making me dance such songs with him, though the feminine man would never admit it.

The cheering boomed as did the shouts of encouragement as I continued to move. I didn’t even realize fully what I had done until the song ended and I gave my final pose. Claps, screams, and cheer erupted and all I could do was stare at the darkened faces from the crowd; had I really done that great a job?

“YOU ARE AMAZING!” the MC cried and the cheering doubled.

“And it seems like everyone agrees too,” he concluded with a grin.

I couldn’t help myself, but move my attention to the Bachelor’s table and they themselves were clapping enthusiastically like everyone else though their mouths were a tad hung open. I couldn’t help but laugh at their slight bewildered expression; maybe it wasn’t so bad after all.

“Give it up for Tae!” MC called and yet another wave of applause nearly deafened me.

I smiled awkwardly and shyly, bowed before practically running off the stage and towards the kitchen.  However, before I even managed to get to my place of refuge people quickly surrounded me with words of congratulations, amazement, support and admiration. I could only nod and thank them, though it felt very odd for me. I just wanted nothing more than to get away.

I was definitely taken back by a few declarations of love towards me and I couldn’t help but wonder just how stupid these men thought I was and how they were. I quickly pushed myself through the crowd and into the kitchen practically collapsing when I had room to breathe. I stumbled inside and onto my feet before leaning against the wall for a second, sliding down onto the bench against the same wall.

“Tae you were amazing!” I heard a female scream and I practically jump out of my seat.

I snapped my head to the door only to see Mae running towards me with her arms open wide with Mr. Lee and Cupid and his gang following them into the kitchen. In horror I stepped back surprised, but cringe when I felt the cashier’s arms around me tightened up. Mae squealed as she held me in her arms and I continued to struggle for my lack of being able to breathe air.

“Mae, let her go before you suffocate her to death,” I managed to hear Mr. Lee say as my vision began to blur.

Suddenly, the arms untangled themselves from my firm and I leaned against the wall again as I tried my best to regain some air into my deflating lungs. I coughed for a second as Mae began to blurt out how sorry she was for nearly killing me. I simply waved at her as I held my neck not being able to explain in words.

“Are you okay?” I heard someone ask and saw Key step out towards me.

Once I managed to stand erect, I nodded my head and saw Mae hanging her head low. I smiled small and walked over, patting her head.

“It’s fine Mae,” I said.

“B-but,” she tried.

“But nothing; it’s the past so what can we do,” I said again.

I hated when people were hurt or felt saddened by something, especially when I was the source of it. Perhaps that was why I hid my urge to dance from my family, before it became too much. I sighed when I recalled my past; I really needed to stop and simply look forward.

“Hello everyone!” I heard someone yell from the back door and I froze at the voice.

“H-heechul?” I mumbled and stared at the man in shock and when he caught sight of me, his face had the same look mine had.

“T-tae?” he called out pointing his finger.
