You wait, quietly, pacing back and forth by the telephone with fear as lightning dances in the sky, thunder rolling both in the air and in your heart.
It's already three thirty in the morning, but the lights stay on as you pray that you're not right. It's the weather, just the weather, that's kept him out this late. That's all. Because the storm, it's growing worse, raging almost out of control. And, really, your biggest concern right now is whether he's alive or dead.
He shouldn't be out this late. They shouldn't keep him working this late. Especially not on a night like this. The weather, oh the damned weather, it's horrible. It's keeping him away from you. That's what's keeping him away for so long, tonight.

You stand by the window, your nightgown flowing around your ankles, telephone receiver in hand, when your husband finally pulls into the driveway.
