Defenseless
Demon King
Heechul's apparently safe. Recovering. So Hyukjae's slowly starting to feel better too. The boy speaks to his cousin. Every night. Up until Heechul needs to rest.
Over the next week... Hyukjae goes back to giggling. Being a goof. Breaking into smiles.
He is also politer. To Donghae. He thanks. Asks. About what Donghae's okay to do. He checks if he wants to eat. Have a taste. Of whatever snacks Hyukjae's devouring. He brings Donghae coffee. To the balcony. He's done it three times... in a chipped mug.
Donghae's been too grumpy. To refuse.
---
In the morning... Hyukjae skips into the kitchen. Very early.
"Good morning!" he says. Brightly. He holds up a mug. "I'm gonna make you your coffee!"
Donghae sits up. "Your shirt's... inside out..."
"Oh!" Hyukjae pouts down. At his clothes. He puts the mug on the counter. Pulls his shirt off. Wears it again. "There! Okay, gonna make you coffee!"
Donghae gets to his feet. Walks over. Takes the empty mug.
"Worry about yourself, first. I don't need to eat or drink."
"You don't like the coffee I make?" Hyukjae sounds saddened.
"Uh. I don't care for it -- I mean, okay, it's fine, but you're going to school, so just make yourself food."
"B-But... I want to make you coffee... do you want tea? Do you want me to make something else?"
Donghae gives up. Hyukjae's not very good. At making things. So he'll end up being late to school.
"Fine. Coffee's good. I'll make your breakfast."
The boy's smile's radiant. It makes Donghae... kind of... warm.
"Thanks," Hyukjae says. Quietly.
---
Donghae is mad. Honestly. The boy's words from that day... they bothered him. He feels wronged somehow. That's pathetic. He knows.
Yes, Donghae is a demon. The boy and his family... had a terrible history with demons. His cousin was nearly killed. Hyukjae obviously had to be upset. Angry. He should hate demons.
He's also just a helpless scared teenager.
Day by day... Hyukjae keeps smiling up at him. Keeps trying to be nicer. He speaks more happily. And... Donghae still feels like sulking. He does, too. Often. He's realized it.
But whenever Hyukjae's gaze falls... his pout comes out... Donghae reminds himself: if Hyukjae's a child... Donghae's not.
He shouldn't act like one.
"Sure... I'll try it..." Donghae mutters.
Hyukjae's face lights up. Instantly. Donghae throws the candy into his mouth.
"Do you like it? Do you want another one?"
"Mm. But no. You eat them."
Hyukjae's smile drops. "Oh... okay..."
"How's school?" Donghae asks.
"It's okay! I've caught up on all the work!"
"Good for you."
Donghae pats his head. Gets to his feet.
He sees Hyukjae's happy smile. It's reflected on the balcony door. Donghae slides it open. Steps out.
A while later... Donghae glances back. To check Hyukjae inside. The boy appears down again. Donghae groans.
What is he supposed to do? Apologize to the boy? Or tell him he's not mad? When he is?
----
"Oh, um, wait, Donghae..."
Hyukjae holds the straps of his own bag. Tightly. A bit shyly.
"Y-You can just... walk to the bus stop with me today. You don't have to do your... invisible thing or stay close to the school..."
Donghae frowns. "Why?"
"Um, b-b
