Demon King
Hyukjae's checking directions. On his phone. He's not paying attention. Donghae gently moves him. Towards the side. People come and go around them.
"Oh, it'll be here in three minutes," Hyukjae says. Looks up. Then points. "That's the stop."
The boy rushes off. Joins the small number waiting as well. Donghae jogs after him.
"Did you check where we could get off?" Donghae stands beside him.
Hyukjae nods. "Y-Yeah, I'll t-tell you."
His lips shake. Donghae's not sure. Is it the cold now? Or still nerves? He rewraps the scarf for Hyukjae. Brings an arm around his shoulders.
---
"Do y-you want to wait here?" Hyukjae asks.
They're standing in front of a coffee shop. They just got off.
"Sure. How far do you have to walk now?" Donghae says.
Hyukjae looks behind him. Then up the street. "Just... maybe ten minutes?"
"Okay... I'll wait for you here. I'll call you in an hour."
"An hour?"
"Yes. If you don't answer then... I'll try and find you."
Hyukjae frowns. His nose is pink. From the cold. The crying. He ponders for a moment. Then his breath mists.
"Okay... I guess," Hyukjae mumbles. Turns. Waves lightly to Donghae. "I'll go now... bye..."
"Be careful, kid," Donghae says. Watches him scuttle away.
Donghae keeps standing. Keeps his eyes on him. Until Hyukjae crosses the street. Disappears from view. Donghae sighs. Looks at the coffee shop. Enters. Reluctantly.
He hasn't made up his mind. Whether he should stay. Actually sit here. Wait. He doesn't get the time to.
Suddenly, he has to turn. Hurry right back out. There's a twist in his gut.
Donghae bursts into the street. His heart's pounding. He gulps. Looks ahead. To see if he can spot Hyukjae. He's not supposed to follow him. . But what he felt was strong.
His feet move forward. Walk fast. He taps into Hyukjae's feeling. He's not thinking. Not caring. His heart hammers. His chest and throat are too tight. Oh--
Because the boy must be crying.
Hyukjae can't be far. Donghae lets his body lead him. Until he has to halt. At a crosswalk.
It's busier now. Cars speed by. People impatiently wait. Donghae tries to look around. His eyes scan for the boy.
As soon as the cars stop... Donghae sees him. Sees the coat. The scarf. The thin legs. Before anyone has moved... Donghae runs. He doesn't pay attention. Doesn't care. About the people around him.
"Hyukjae!"
He comes to a stop. Hyukjae's whirled around. By the corner. His phone's held. Tightly. Donghae grabs his shoulders. Checks his face.
"Dong--?" Hyukjae presses his lips. Covers the phone.
"What's wrong? Why are you crying? What happened?"
"W-Wait, please," Hyukjae whispers. Moves from Donghae's hold. Turns to the wall again. "Hi... sorry, c-can I speak to him?" There's a sniffle. A short pause. "Oh... w-when could I speak to him?"
Donghae steps closer. Quietly. Leans a shoulder on the wall. Watches Hyukjae speak in a trembling voice. He's barely holding his cries.
"B-But you said he's okay... isn't he -- no... are you sure...? H-How c
