WE’RE BEST FRIENDS

Lisa was basically used to everything about Jennie Kim. They were best friends in college and went on to become roommates in a shared condo unit after they had graduated last year, Jennie has been working at this high end magazine company as the Head Writer, and Lisa on the other hand has been working as a Music Producer at Interscope. They’ve been roommates for over a year now and surprisingly they get along well despite the constant bickering that best friends usually do.

Lisa knew Jennie from the top of her head to the tip of her toes. She knew how to piss her off, she knew her funny bone, she knew what her weakness was, she knew her strength, she knew her insecurities, her favorite books, her biggest fear, her daily routine, her night routine, her skin care routine, her past boyfriends, her greatest heartbreaks, the meal she ate last week, and even the brand of tampons she used.

Sometimes people even mistake them as a couple, maybe it’s because they often do those couple stuff together, like going grocery shopping, or carrying each other’s bags when shopping for a new pair of shoes, or going on Sunday dates instead of spending it with family, or cuddling on the couch as they’d watch Disney movies until the break of dawn but falling asleep against each other with bowls of popcorn and cans of soda left abandoned on the table.

“You’re crazy if you keeping thinking that you and Jennie are just friends” Jisoo once said when they were casually hanging out over her place

“We’re not just friends, we’re best friends” Lisa had pointed out, only making Jisoo laugh at her, Lisa had simply shook her head at her friend

Lisa and Jennie were just coincidentally clingy people, they were mostly like that to their friends, but they were simply more clingy with each other because they’re roommates and are together most of the day, it had been a usual thing for them, nothing made them uncomfortable with each other and they happily accepted any form of hug, cuddle and kiss the other would give out. Lisa especially liked it whenever Jennie would give out random hugs, the latter would just crash into her and Lisa would act in pain only to return the hug straight away, Jennie on the other hand liked it whenever Lisa would give her forehead kisses, it warmed her heart to the fullest.

“Lisa, are you sure you’re not dating Jennie?” Rosé had once asked Lisa during their pre-recording for the Aussie’s latest single, Lisa chuckled at her friend’s remark

“What on earth makes you say that, Chaeyoung-ah?” Lisa asked her, Rosé looked at her with an “are-you-kidding-me” look and Lisa could only roll her eyes

“She’s my best friend” Lisa had pointed out

“You can’t be just friends with someone who looks at you like you’re their favorite K-pop Idol. She won’t even look at me like that and I’m literally a K-pop Idol” Rosé said as she smirked at Lisa

“We’re not just friends, we’re best friends” was Lisa’s response

“Mate, you’ve got a long way to go” Rosé said as she tapped Lisa’s back and chuckled

Lisa and Jennie just laugh it off whenever people would mistake them as a couple, it often happens in the supermarket as they’re both arguing over what kind of cereal to buy or whether they needed more stacks of pancake mix, if 3 boxes of pop tarts were considered unhealthy, and if which was better, Coke or Pepsi?

“You can never have too much pop tarts” Jennie insisted, the girl was wearing a yellow hoodie that she had stolen from Lisa’s closet, while she had some sweatpants and a sneakers on

“Who said that? Gandhi?” Lisa challenged, she too was unexpectedly wearing a yellow shirt tucked in denim shorts and flip flops, she had just gotten home from a hard day of work at the studio but before she could sleep on the couch, Jennie had dragged her out because they were running out of food

“Gandhi isn’t exactly a great person to begin with, and besides that, he basically starved himself for the betterment of others” Jennie said, she was always a smarty-pants, hence her love for reading and her landing a job of being the head writer at a famous magazine company

“Those were very contradicting” Lisa pointed out

“Do your research” Jennie snarled, only making Lisa roll her eyes, the older girl then grabbed her 3rd box of pop tarts and placed it on their cart

“Jennie, only 2 pop tarts!” Lisa had exclaimed

Jennie then brought out the big guns, she pouted as she grabbed the hem of Lisa’s shirt

“Jagi, please” Jennie said as she showed her aegyo, and Lisa couldn’t do anything else but groan and say yes to the older girl which made her squeal in delight and hug the taller one

“Oh you guy are an adorable couple” an older woman, probably in her mid-70s, had spoken up from behind them

They had jumped in surprised and blushed at the old lady.

“Oh we’re not a couple” Lisa had said

“Oh girls, don’t worry, I’m not against love” the old lady said as she smiled at them and left to go to the meat section

“That was weird” Lisa said

“Yeah…she’s like 70 yet she’s buying meat, she should be careful of her blood pressure” Jennie joked, making Lisa laugh as well

Their parents often asked them when their wedding would be, it would make them choke on their own saliva at the absurdity of it, and their parents would simply look at them weirdly, asking them if they had said something wrong. After explaining that they were just friends, it was their parents’ turn to laugh at them, and their turn to look at their parents weirdly.

Yeah they were much acquainted with each other’s family, Lisa had brought Jennie to Thailand during their sem-break in junior year which surprised Lisa’s family, and they thoroughly enjoyed the Korean’s company and had gotten along well with her, to the point that they had to beg Lisa to bring Jennie with her whenever she’d visit Thailand. Jennie would also bring Lisa to some family occasions that her family would throw, and they were in love with the Thai the moment Lisa had opened ; she just had this charisma that everyone seemed to love. Their families met each other when Lisa had invited Jennie’s parents to Thailand for her cousin’s wedding, and their parents immediately loved each other that they honestly thought they had forgotten they had daughters.

“Lisa, when are you and Jennie gonna get married?” Lisa’s mother had asked her once when they were face timing each other

“Mom! Seriously, Jennie’s like in the other room, stop being absurd” Lisa had told her mom firmly, but her mother simply laughed at her

“Just tell me when” Lisa’s mother teased as she ended the call

Sometimes though, Lisa did think of it, of the possibility of her and Jennie falling in love, like all those cliché romance movies and novels. And in all honesty, Lisa doesn’t mind.

Lisa was now currently watching Stranger Things on Netflix, she had a day off today and she wanted to spend the day lazing around on their couch with a box of pizza all for herself, only because Jennie had work today and isn’t going to be around for quite some time, but the cat-eyed girl was currently fussing around in her room because she overslept and was now late for work.

Lisa chuckled at her best friend’s panicky mode.

Jennie took at least 5 more minutes in her room, so Lisa made her way to the kitchen counter where Jennie had left her car keys, she knew for sure her best friend would forget about her keys because she was hurrying so much and she tends to forget everything when she’s in a hurry, like one time when she was late for a vet appointment for her dog Kuma and she literally forgot to bring her dog, Lisa had to drive Kuma to the vet and laugh her off at her best friend.

“Lisa?! I’m gonna go now, what do you want for dinner later?” Jennie called out

Lisa walked to the living room and saw Jennie hurriedly putting on her sneakers. She was wearing a baggy black shirt that Lisa was sure belonged to her closet because of its larger size, she had tucked it in gray fitted slacks, her hair was in a messy bun, her glasses was almost falling off her nose bridge too. Lisa chuckled at the sight.

“Hey! What do you want for dinner? Hurry up, I’m gonna be late” Jennie asked once again as she finally finished tying her shoes, she was basically panting

“Taco Bell” Lisa said, Jennie then gave out a thumbs up and a loud exhale and checked her bag probably for her phone and wallet

“Shoot! Forgot my phone” Jennie as she rushed back to her room

When she ran back out, Lisa called her out

“Jennie?” Lisa asked, amused, she sat by the arm of their couch by the door

“What?” Jennie asked

“Aren’t you forgetting something?” Lisa asked

“Oh yeah, sorry” Jennie said as she walked towards Lisa and kissed her hard on the lips, startling the taller one, it ended as quickly as it started

“Um…” Lisa spoke “I was talking about this but thanks” she then showed Jennie her car keys

Jennie’s eyes widened. She then shyly grabbed the car keys from Lisa’s hand but the taller one stood up and held it higher.

“You know what, I think you’re gonna end up in a car crash since you’re rushing so much, so let me drive you to work, come on” Lisa stated as she intertwined her hand with Jennie’s

As they made their way to the elevator, Lisa looked down at Jennie who was biting her bottom lip. Lisa cupped the smaller one’s chin and crashed her lips softly against Jennie’s, their lips moved slowly and surely against one another, alas once they had arrived at the parking lot, Lisa pulled away from her best friend.

“So…when should we tell our parents about this?” Lisa asked teasingly

Jennie chuckled as they both made their way to Jennie’s car, suddenly forgetting about how late Jennie is for work.

“I think they already know about it before we even knew about it” Jennie said

Lisa smiled and chuckled.

“But I did keep on insisting we were best friends” Lisa said

“Now where’s the lie in that though?” Jennie said as she kissed Lisa’s lips again, both eventually smiling against the kiss

And maybe Lisa now has to apologize to everyone for not believing in a single word they said about her and Jennie. Because deep down, Lisa knew she had so much feelings for Jennie that she chose to pay no mind to it, obliviously not acknowledging her love for her best friend. But at least now she knew, or rather, at least now she’s sure.

She’s sure of her.
