First date

Sunsets and Coffees

A view of scattered clothes all over the room greeted Chaeyoung when she woke up. This is highly unusual for someone like Jeongyeon who easily gets frustrated when something's out of place. But there she was, in her closet, throwing rejected clothes, probably looking for something to wear for her first ever date.

"Bro.. Do you need some help?" Chaeyoung slowly proceeded to the rummaging girl.

"No, I'm fine. I got this. After all, this is my date. Just make yourself something with whatever you can find in the fridge or on the shelf." Jeongyeon replied without looking, checking herself in the mirror on how she looks in her pullover. She didn't like it. She threw it across the room and went searching again.

She wanted to smell nice, but not too much. She wanted to look good, but not flashy. She wanted to impress Sana, but she doesn't want Sana to know that she's trying too hard to impress her.

Jeongyeon is now getting stressed. The date, Sana, and all of the "what if's" she's thinking is too overwhelming. The clothes all over the place is making it even worse.

She sat down, leaned on the side of her bed, closed her eyes, and rest her face on her palms.

Her pessimism is out of control again. Thoughts like "Sana is gonna be disappointed." "I'll probably gonna bore her to death" or "I'm gonna mess this date up for sure." Is taking over her.

Jeongyeon took her time to breathe and clear her thought. "I'll be fine, even if it didn't work out." She kept on repeating to herself, until she finally believed in her own words. She then stood up, picked all the clothes that was thrown and arranged it back to her closet.

She decided to wore a plain white shirt, topped it with a black blazer and put on a black jeans, then rushed to the kitchen.

"Chaeng, what do you think?" Jeongyeon asked, as she turned around, hoping for a decent feedback. Chaeyoung, however, couldn't talk due to stuffed with cheerios, and so all she could do is clap excitedly and gesture a thumbs up.

"You sure?" Jeongyeon asked, while putting on her white sneakers. Chaeyoung nodded vigorously in response.

"Well then, I'll head out now. Clean the dishes you used and please lock the door when you leave." And before Chaeyoung could say anything, Jeongyeon already left.

---

The meeting place was about an hour ride from her home. She couldn't help but wonder why Sana would want to meet this far when they're practically just in the same area, but she doesn't want to complain because for her, Sana agreeing on a date with her is already a huge favor.

Even though the trip was a bit long, Jeongyeon still had plenty of time to spare before 4:00. She alloted too much time out of fear of arriving late, but now, she doesn't know what to do, so she decided to just walk around a little to check the place out.

It wasn't her first time here but somehow, it felt different. Probably because she was still a kid the last time she was here or maybe because it was winter back then and Ppalgansaek bay is only popular in the summer. Summer isn't officially over yet so the place is packed with Families, group of friends, but mostly with couples.

Chaeyoung and Tzuyu is the only couple she's aware of because Jeongyeon isn't the kind that pays attention to other people's business, until now. She focused her attention on the couples and noticed how they are just in their own world, as if their partner's the only thing they see. Hugging, kissing, finger's intertwined with each other. Jeongyeon copied their hands with her own, but it's still a mystery to her how one can get addicted with someone else's touch. For her, she'd totally hurt, or kill even, anyone those who invade her personal space that isn't in her inner circle friends. But today is different. Today, she'll let someone cross her boundaries, hoping to understand why people are going crazy over this.

So lost in her thoughts, she didn't notice how much time had passed. It was 3:45 when she looked at her watch and suddenly, all the anxiety she thought was gone, came rushing in. She dashed to the nearest restroom and fixed her hair that was ruined by the wind and checked if anything else needs fixing. There's none.

Across the restroom, there was a flower stall. 4:00 is getting near, but Jeongyeon still persist on buying a daisy. Despite of being unsure what daisies' symbolizes, she bought it anyway because it somehow felt like Sana would like it. She wanted to give something to her as "Thank you" for the date, or an early apology gift just in case the date turn into a disaster. 'If it did turn out bad, atleast she got something from me.' Jeongyeon thought.

Now that she has gift, she was almost ready. Almost, because there was still one problem. She couldn't find the pier Sana mentioned. She checked the whole coast a while ago but she didn't see any pier. Even back then, she doesn't remember seeing a pier in here.

Jeongyeon then started to think that maybe this was all just some prank Chaeyoung did to make a fool out of her. It made sense because she suddenly kept asking about dating last night, plus, the meeting place is too far when it clearly stated in Sana's profile that they just live in the same city. And now, the pier is nowhere to be found. She thought maybe, it doesn't really exist in the first place. It made perfect sense to Jeongyeon, but she thought maybe the biggest prank isn't this. Chaeyoung probably did something wicked in her apartment after she left her.

Jeongyeon is now highly convinced with the conclusion she made, that all of this is just one of Chaeyoung's sick jokes. She took her phone from her pocket, fuming mad, and she dialled the little girl's number, readying herself to yell at her with all her might. But just before Chaeyoung could answer and get her ears ripped off, a high-pitched voice called her from not too far, proving all of her assumptions to be wrong.

"Pinocchio!" The voice called. She isn't Pinocchio but who else could it be, right? The girl was running towards her waving her left hand up high while holding a large basket on the other. It was Sana, alright. Jeongyeon could tell from her light-brown eyes, and the smile that's been on her mind since last night. But the real deal was a lot prettier, no doubt. Especially with her formal pastel pink long sleeve polo, tucked in her white jeans while her sleeves folded midway.

Now there they are, finally facing each other. Sana is still catching her breath while the tall one is still in shock, couldn't believe an idol-looking girl is her date. Her mind couldn't make even just a simple greeting. The worst case scenario is all she can think of so handing the daisy was all she could do.

"Thank you." Sana started, finally stabalized her breathing "I thought I'd never see you. If it wasn't for your blonde hair, I'd never find you, you know? When I saw you, I had to think twice. I wasn't sure at first if you're the right person because the image I had of you was a bit... Pinocchio-ish. I didn't expect you'd look hot." Jeongyeon looked away, trying to hide her blush, but failed. Sana just giggled. She wants to flirt back, but didn't know how too, and she didn't want to mess this up.

"Why didn't you call me then, or something."

"My phone died. I'm sorry."

"Well, I'm sorry too, I didn't know where to stay. I couldn't find the pier you're talking about." Jeongyeon looked at the coastline once again.

"That's my mistake. Sorry." Sana smiled apologetically. "I was suppose to tell you where it is, but like I said, my phone died."

"Then where is it?"

"Come." Sana grabbed Jeongyeon by the hand and started running. She just obediently let herself get dragged by the girl, enjoying her view of Sana's beautiful hair from behind, and whiffing her floral scent at the same time. Jeongyeon noticed the large basket the dark-haired girl's been carrying since the beginning. She knew what she's suppose to do, So she let go of Sana's hand and carried the basket for her. It was heavier than she thought, but there's no way she's gonna complain. Instead, she herself to catch up a bit with Sana to hold her hand again and Jeongyeon couldn't explain why she felt the urge to do that. She was never the first one to initiate physical contact but somehow, it just felt natural, like she knew it would be okay without asking permission.

The large crowd no longer can be seen from behind, but they're still running. Slowly, Jeongyeon started to discern something from afar. A tiny beach house, and eventually, the pier. And finally, they arrived at their dating spot.

---

The crashing sound of the waves is too loud probably because the location is secluded. And The pier was a lot smaller than what she had expected. A letter 'T' made out of wood that connects the land to the water, perfect for diving or fishing than for dating. It's not that Jeongyeon doesn't like it, but she couldn't help but wonder why Sana would chose there. And why must the place have to be far from the people, a very risky thing to do since she's with a complete stranger. Jeongyeon wouldn't do such thing, but you can never be too careful, you know?

"Pinocchio, come here! Let's eat." Sana called, cutting her off from her thoughts.

"Uh, yeah. Sure." Jeongyeon proceeded to the pier where Sana's already sitting. She removed her shoes then sat beside the girl, copying her feet which were dipped in water.

In Sana's basket, there were: Chicken and tuna sandwiches, a tall box of orange juice, a container of different slices of fruits, and a whole apple pie. Jeongyeon who only had a granola bar for lunch, felt her stomach growl. And here she thought, she was trying too hard. She felt bad for having only a daisy to offer, but still took a tuna sandwich and a slice of apple pie, nonetheless.

"So, this is a pier, huh? I thought it's called a dock." Jeongyeon said, attempting to start a conversation.

"Some also call it "wharf" others call it "jetty" But forget about that! We didn't meet to argue what this wooden platform is called? Tell me about you, Pinocchio."

"Uhm.. Well, first off, It's Jeongyeon, not Pinocchio."

"Aww.. But I like Pinocchio." Sana pouted. Jeongyeon had to bite her lower lip just to prevent herself from smiling. "Oh well, Jeongyeon isn't so bad anyway. So what else?"

"Umm.. This is my first date."

"No way! You've got to be kidding me!"

"I swear" she raised her right hand.

"I'm pretty sure there are people checking you out atleast."

"I don't really pay attention to my surroundings."

"Is that so? I must be so lucky then" Sana removed the basket that was separating her from Jeongyeon and scooted closer to her. Jeongyeon didn't react.

"So why did you finally decided to try dating?"

"Curiosity? I just wanna know what's all the fuzz about, and what's it like, why everyone is so obsess with it."

"Well, I hope you figure it out."

"With how you're making me feel, I think I'm starting to." Though it wasn't intended, she made Sana blush this time. Unfortunately for Jeongyeon, she didn't see it because She was too busy looking at her hand, holding the slice of apple pie. "Okay, my turn. Is this your first date as well? If not, What's your favorite thing about dating and what's your purpose for it?"

Sana threw her head back laughing at Jeongyeon's formality. Totally unexpected from someone looking like a play-boy. Jeongyeon looked at her, confused and a little offended until she recovered from laughing and finally answered the blonde girl's question.

"This is my 18th date actually. What I like about dating is I get to meet diverse people. Through those differences, It made my mind open to everything, and as my mind opens up more, I became more patient and more understanding. I also get to learn a lot as well, it was interesting. So far, you're the most interesting though." Sana wiggled her eyebrows at her. "The reason why I date at first is because I was hoping I could meet someone I'm totally compatible with. Someone I won't get tired being with everyday or Someone I can grow old with. But with the dates I had, I realized it was impossible. They don't really care enough to hear your story or know you as a person. All they want is some temporary pleasure."

Jeongyeon felt the urge to hold the girl after hearing the pain in her voice and tell her that she doesn't want temporary pleasure, that she's willing to hear her out and learn everything about her if she'd let her, but before she could, Sana spoke again.

"It's my fault though. The 21-year-old me should have known that what I want is only a fairytale. I didn't listen to my friends when they told me I was being delusional, that the love I knew isn't like in the movies I watched."

"Your friends are ty." Is all Jeongyeon could say. It made Sana laugh.

The sky is now a blazing orange, preparing itself to dim and the wind blowing, slightly becoming cool, a sign that autumn is approaching. Sana looked at Jeongyeon's eyes intently while the taller girl did the Same. It was her first time to look at her date's eyes and see nothing but pure sincerity. This time, she knew, Jeongyeon really isn't like any other.

"Can we stay still for a bit?" Sana requested. She wrapped the blonde's arm around her and rest her head on her shoulder. Jeongyeon didn't resist, instead, she rest her head on Sana's, letting her know that she has no complaints. And together, they enjoyed each other's warmth while looking at the horizon, watching Sana's favorite view until the sky turned completely dark.

They stayed like that for a while and If only they could stay like that forever, Jeongyeon wouldn't mind one bit. She never knew how much it would feel good being wanted just for your presence and touch, too bad it has to end.

Sana stood up and pulled Jeongyeon along with her. She gave the blonde's shoes and wore hers but Jeongyeon wouldn't move.

Hoping she could still extend her day with Sana, she held her hand and asked "Can we have dinner? My treat this time." It was cute to see Jeongyeon plead but sadly, she needs to reject it.

"I really enjoyed today. It was really nice meeting you. And I really appreciate you listening to me, but I'm sorry, I have to go now." She held Jeongyeon's left cheek and inch closer until the tip of their nose touched " But I'll see you again next week, okay?"

It wasn't a request so Sana no longer waited for an answer. Instead, she gave her a quick peck on her cheek and left, leaving Jeongyeon loss for words.
