End Game

Wendy’s POV

Time froze for Wendy. “I’m sorry, what?”

Irene sighed, “You and Seulgi have been spending a lot of time together. I see the way you look at her.”

Wendy stammered, “W-what do you mean unnie?”

Irene was silent for a moment before speaking again, “Do you know how Seulgi and I met? I was in the bathroom one day crying about this boy named Bogum. Seulgi walks in and sees me. A normal person would have walked away, but she stayed and asked me what was wrong. She told me that boys were dumb anyways and took me out for ice cream later that day. She worked hard for a place in my heart and I’m just not ready to give her up yet.”

Wendy simply listened as Irene continued, “Seulgi doesn’t know it, but I see it. She looks at you differently. I know it’s wrong, but love makes you do crazy things right? I’m sorry Seungwan.”

Wendy was confused, but she took a deep breath of air before replying, “I’m so sorry Irene. I didn’t know…I never meant for this to happen.”

Irene looked at her with sorrow filled eyes, “I know.”

Wendy sighed, “I will spend less time with Seulgi. Hopefully things will return to normal soon.”

Irene tried to smile, “Thanks Wendy.”

Wendy’s phone vibrated.

“Wan-ah, I found the perfect song for you”

“Hey, where are you?”

“Why aren’t you replying to me?”

Wendy’s fingers were itching to text back. She contemplated on what to say for awhile before finally texting back, “Sorry, fell asleep.”

Wendy threw her phone onto her bed and sighed as she thought back to her conversation with Irene.

The way I look at her?

Sure, Wendy was spending a lot of time with Seulgi, but that’s what good friends do right? They’ve been practicing for the talent show.

The way she looks at me?

Wendy thinks back to how her mind goes blank whenever she looks at Seulgi. Her eyes always lingered a little longer than they should have, but who could blame her; the girl was gorgeous. Wendy gasped, “Did I just call her gorgeous?”

Wendy remembers last week when the two were in the coffee shop and Seulgi had brought a sketchpad this time. She had been busy writing new lyrics when she looked up to see Seulgi staring intently at her. When she asked what the girl was doing, Seulgi smiled and stated, “getting a better view.” And continued drawing. Wendy remembers how her heart skipped a beat when Seulgi smiled at her.

Oh crap…

Wendy stood up as she came to the realization

I am in love with her.

The following weeks leading up to the talent show were hard for Wendy. She turned down every invitation from Seulgi to hang out and practice. Partially to keep her promise with Irene, but also because she wasn’t ready to confront her own feelings. She felt her heart ache as the other girl pouted every time Wendy said no. She thought the girl would eventually give up, but that wasn’t in Seulgi’s nature.

One day Wendy was packing up her school bag and got ready to leave when she was stopped.

“Hey Wan-ah, we haven’t hung out in awhile. Do you want to go grab some ice cream?”

Wendy wanted to say yes. She wanted things to go back to normal. She wanted to sing more duets with Seulgi, but the only words that came out were, “Sorry Seul, I really have to go study. I’m behind on math homework.”

Seulgi stared at Wendy, “You’re never behind on homework, especially math homework.”

“Oh yeah, sorry. Physics homework then.”

Wendy knew that the other girl could see right past her lies, but she went with it anyways. She told Seulgi that she had to go and tried to walk past, but was stopped again when she felt a grip around her forearm.

“Are you avoiding me? Did I do something wrong?”

She looked up to see Seulgi staring back at her with sad eyes and Wendy couldn’t help but feel guilty.

“No, I’ve just been really busy and wanted some time alone. Maybe next time?” Wendy tried smiling.

Seulgi reluctantly nodded and let go. As Wendy made her way out the door, she saw that Irene had witnessed the whole scene. The two acknowledged each other and Wendy rushed home as she felt the tears well up in her eyes.

Seulgi’s POV

The days that followed were no different. Seulgi continued to ask Wendy to hang out and Wendy repeatedly rejected her. Soon Wendy stopped eating lunch with the group and Seulgi couldn’t figure out what happened.

Sooyoung was talking about her new boyfriend, Sungjae when Seulgi spoke up, “Hey, do you guys know what happened to Wendy? She hasn’t been around much lately.”

Yeri pondered, “Maybe she’s been practicing for the talent show? She’s probably busy preparing.”

“Yeah, I guess you’re right.”

Irene soon chimed in, “Seulgi, I heard a new ramen shop is opening tonight, do you want to go?”

Seulgi half heartedly smiled and nodded.

Two more weeks had past and Seulgi was laying in Irene’s bed wondering how Wendy was doing. She saw the girl in class, but she always ran out when the bell rang. Wendy also stopped replying to her text messages.

Seulgi groaned as Irene walked into the room.

“Seul, I was thinking we could go shopping first and then go eat dinner later.”

“Yeah sure.”

Irene looked over to see her girlfriend staring at her phone.

“What are you doing? Stop staring at your phone like that. You look like you’re about to shoot lasers out of your eyes”

Seulgi was silent for a moment before speaking, “What do you think happened to Wendy? We were fine one minute, and then we weren’t. She won’t text me back or anything.”

“Maybe she’s just busy.”

“Yeah, but how busy can she be? We already took all our exams and the talent show is this upcoming week. What else is she doing?”

“I don’t know, maybe she wants to practice alone.”

“But we always used to practice together. I don’t ge-“

“SEULGI. STOP”

Seulgi sat up as she looked at Irene. “What? Are you okay?” The other girl was turning red.

“Wendy, wendy, wendy. She’s all you can talk about nowadays. What about me?” Irene’s voice cracked as she continued, “What can she give you that I can’t?”

Seulgi stared at Irene, “What are you talking about?”

Irene almost laughed, “You can’t be serious. You guys are always together. You never have time for me anymore and even when we’re together, she’s all you can talk about. God Seulgi, you can’t sit here and tell me that you don’t have feelings for her.”

Seulgi was dumbfounded. Feelings for Wendy? All she could do was stare at Irene as the other girl started crying.

“At first I told myself it was normal – your relationship with Wendy. Platonic friends right? And then I saw it that night at the Halloween party. You looked at her the same way you used to look at me.”

“Irene…I…”

“Save it Seulgi, it's over. Please, just go. I want to be alone.”

Before Seulgi knew it, she was standing outside of Irene’s door. She started to walk away and before she knew it, she was running. She didn't stop until her legs gave out. She was laying on the ground and didn't notice the tears that streamed out of her eyes. She then pulled out her phone and called Sooyoung.

“Sooyoung. I messed up.”

Seulgi doesn’t remember falling asleep. She awakes to find Sooyoung sleeping soundly next to her. Oh yeah. Seulgi had come over after calling and cried everything out. Sooyoung comforted her until she fell asleep.

Seulgi picked up her phone to see if she had any messages. Nothing. Of course. Why would she text you after all of that? Seulgi sighed and soon fell back to sleep.

When she woke up the next morning, Sooyoung was already in the bathroom getting ready.

“Hurry up unnie. I’m hungry! Let’s go to the café down the street.”

Seulgi felt dazed, but went to the bathroom to clean herself up. When the two got to the café, they ordered a sandwich and tea. Their order had just come and Seulgi was about to take a bite when Sooyoung spoke up.

“So when are you going to confess to Wendy?”

Seulgi almost choked, “Confess? What do you mean. I don’t even know if I like her and Irene just broke up with me.”

“Don’t know if you like her? Unnie, you’re seriously the most senseless person I’ve ever met.”

Seulgi drank some of her tea, “Senseless? What are you talking about”

Sooyoung shook her head, “You and Irene unnie are great together. You were always happy, but when you were with Wendy unnie…it was just different. Your eyes always lit up when she walked into the room and haven’t you noticed that Wendy unnie treats you differently than the rest of us?”

“What do you mean different? She’s just really nice.”

“She’s nice to everyone, but especially you. She’s always bringing you lunch. She gives you morning wakeup calls to make sure you’re never late for class. You guys are always hanging out together. She stays after school to help you study math on a Friday night. You do realize that any sane person would rather eat glass than help you study right? No offense unnie, but you’re not the fastest learner. Oh, and let’s not forget how she looks at you like you’re her everything. If that’s not love, I don’t know what it is.”

Seulgi’s couldn't speak. Did she really do all of that?

“Irene unnie will get over this eventually. Don’t let your chance with Wendy unnie get away.”

Seulgi finished up lunch and said bye to Sooyoung as she went home to think about all the events that had happened. She sat down at her table when her eyes fell on her sketchpad. She opened it up and found her pencil laying on top of her most recent drawing. It was Wendy bobbing her head to music. She smiled as she remembered the way the smaller girl’s eyebrows furrowed while writing new lyrics. She loved Wendy’s voice, especially when the two were alone and Wendy was singing to just her.

She laughs to herself when she remembers how her parents embarrassed her during dinner with Wendy. Seulgi then blushed as she thought about how Wendy felt when she pulled her away from the speeding car later that night.

Seulgi was spinning in her chair as she thought about Irene and how she mentioned the Halloween party. She feels an ache in her heart as she remembers seeing Wendy with Chanyeol. She stopped her chair and closed her eyes. She’s right. I had everything. Great friends, amazing girlfriend. Yet she couldn’t help but feel jealous when she saw the two together. Was it love?

Seulgi groaned and debated on whether or not to text Irene. She decided against it and that it might be for the best to give the other girl some space and put her phone down. She sighed and laid in bed. The talent show was on Wednesday and she didn’t know what to do. She hoped that she would think of something while she slept, but as Seulgi fell asleep that night, she dreamed about Wendy instead.
