“도대체 왜 날 자꾸 그런 무서운 눈빛으로 그렇게 뚫어지게 처다봐요?” 내가 용기를 내서 경수한테 물어봤다. 점심 내내 쳐다본 다음에 화장실 앞에서 우연히 만났다. 뭐, 우연인지 아닌지 모를 수가 없었다. 경수의 눈이 휘둥그레졌지만 한 마디도 안 하고 날 빤히 바라보았다. 내 심장이 쿵쾅거리기 시작했다. 너무 답답해서 그냥 갔다. 사실은 그냥 간 거 아니고 발끈 성을 내며 가 버렸다.

그날 밤에 문 두드리는 소리가 들렸다. 밤늦었는데 누구인가?

문을 열였다.

경수가 문 앞에 서 있었다. 참말로 놀랐다. 너무 놀라서 정신이 멍했다. 눈을 깜빡거렸다. 현실인지 환각인지 확실하지 않았다. 여기서 뭐 하러 왔는지 상상도 못했다. 내 집 주소를 어떻게 찾았는지도 알고 싶지가 않았다. 정말 연쇄 살인범일 수도 있고 아주 훌륭한 스토커일 수도 있었다.

“어... 여기서... 무슨 일...” 더듬거리며 말했다.

경수가 어색한 미소를 지었다.

“나... 눈이 좀 나쁜데... 사실은 안경을 써야 되는데 쓰지 않으면 눈을 가늘게 뜨고 봐야 보고 있는 것 초점이 맞아요. 그래서 무섭게 보일 수도 있지만 그냥 잘 안 보여서 그래요.” 경수가 아주 부드럽고 조용한 목소리로 말했다. 와, 목소리가 장난이 아니었다. 정말 아름답고 매력이 넘쳤다.

“근데 그거 왜 날 보고 있었는지 설명하지는 않잖아요.” 나는 고집을 부리고 지적했다. 경수가 이 시간에 여기까지 왔는데 제대로 대답 좀 했으면 좋겠다고 생각했다.

“잘 생겼으니까요” 경수가 거의 들릴 수 없는 쉰 목소리로 대답했다. 어두워서 확실할 수 없었지만 그의 뺨이 빨개지고 있는 것 같았다.

“뭐라고요?” 당황스럽게 물어봤다.

“너무 잘 생겨서 자꾸 쳐다보게 돼요. 너무 잘생겨서 눈을 뗄 수가 없어요.” 그가 명확하게 말했다.

“음... 어...” 놀라서 말이 나오지 않았다. 하도 당황스러워서 한 마디도 못 했다. 무슨 말을 해야 하는지도 잘 몰랐다. 심장이 미친 듯이 뛰고 있었다.

경수가 살짝 끄떡이고 아무 말도 없이 그냥 가 버렸다.

충격이 커서 한동안 꼼짝도 못 했다. 잘 생겼다고?

“Why are you always staring at me like that with that scary look in your eyes?” I asked Kyungsoo after mustering up some courage. I met him by coincidence in front of the toilet, after he had been staring at me all through lunch. Or, I couldn't be sure if it was really a coincidence or not. Kyungsoo's eyes widened, but he didn't say anything and just gazed at me intently. My heart began to thump wildly. I was so frustrated that I just left. In all truthfulness, I didn't just leave, I left in a huff.

That night there was a knock on the door. Who could it be this late at night?

I opened the door.

Kyungsoo was standing right in front of it. I started. I was so surprised I went into a total daze. I blinked my eyes. I wasn't sure if this was real or if I was hallucinating. I couldn't begin to imagine why he was here. I didn't even want to know how he got my address. He really could be a serial killer or a very skilled stalker.

“Uh.. why.. what brings you...” I stuttered.

Kyungsoo put up an awkward smile.

“I... I have bad eyesight... I should wear glasses, and if I don't use them, I have to peer my eyes in order to see in focus. So maybe I can look a bit scary, but it's just because I can't see well.” Kyungsoo explained in a soft, quiet voice. Wow, his voice was no joke. It was extremely beautiful and charming.

“But that doesn't explain why you were looking at me in the first place.” I stubbornly pointed out. Since Kyungsoo had come all this way at this hour, I thought it would be best to get a proper answer.

“ 'cause you're handsome.” Kyungsoo said in a near inaudible, husky voice. It was dark so I couldn't be sure, but it looked like his cheeks were blushing.

“Say what?” I asked, confused.

“You're so handsome that I end up watching you a lot. You are so handsome, that I can't take my eyes off you.” he said clearly.

“Uhm... eh...” I was so surprised, no words would come out. I was so confused, I couldn't speak. I also had no idea what to say. My heart was beating like crazy.

Kyungsoo gave me a slight nod and just left without a word.

I was in such shock that for a long while I couldn't move. He thought I was handsome?
