그다음 날 점심 때 학교 식당에 가서 경수를 봤는데 경수가 보통처럼 나를 보고 있지 않았다. 경수가 날 자꾸 쳐다보는 게 지금까지 이상하다고 생각을 했지만 이제는 쳐다보지 않으면 더 이상한 느낌이 들었다. 싱숭생숭했다. 그 기분이 좋지 않았다. 그래서 갑자기 일어났다.

“무슨 일이야?” 수호가 놀란 표정으로 물었보았다.

“잠깐만 기다려, 갇다 올게.” 말하고 경수가 있는 곳으로 향했다.

“안녕하세요, 잘 잤어요?” 경수한테 물어보았다. 우리가 친구가 아니라서 처음부터 같이 먹자고 하는 것이 좀 이상하게 들릴 수 있기 때문에 인사부터 하려고 했는데 잘 잤냐고 물어보는 게 훨신 더 이상하게 들렸다. 내가 바보이였다. 내 입 말리기 전에 그 말이 그냥 나왔다.

“예? 어.. 네, 잘 잤는데요.” 경수가 어색하게 대답했다. 근데 작은 목소리로 느닷없이 덧붙였다 “덕분에”. 그의 얼굴이 또 살짝 빨게졌다.

놀라서 말문이 막힐 뻔했지만 꼭 해야 할 말이 있어서 서둘러 막 말해 버렸다. “밥은 같이 먹을래요?” 내 목소리가 살짝 떨렸다.

경수는 입이 떡 벌어진 모양이었다. 설마 거절할 생각은 아니겠지요? 그럴 리가 없겠지요?

“응! 좋아! 가자, 형” 경수의 친구가 쾌활하게 말하고 자기 그릇을 챙기고 일어났다. “안녕! 난 세훈이라고 해, 반갑다, 친구하자.” 그가 큰 미소를 지었다. 아주 느긋하고 귀여운 녀석인 것 같았다. 그리고 그 새로 만든 친구 덕분에 경수가 거절 못 하게 되었다. 다 같이 수호가 앉아 있는 식탁으로 옮겼다. 경수가 짐이 많아서 내가 그의 그릇을 챙겨 갔다. 사실은 내가 그릇을 챙긴 이유는 경수가 뒤늦게 거절도 못 하게 되었다. 따라올 수밖에 없었다.

“형!! 형, 절 기억나세요?” 세훈이 수호에게 아주 신나게 인사했다. “얼마 전에 형이 제 자전거를 고쳐 주셨는데요.” 그의 눈이 빛났다. 수호를 마음에 많이 들었나 보았다. “그리고, 그리고 제가 책들을 다 떨어뜨렸을 때 형이 도와주신 걸 기억나시지요?” 그는 아주 뒤틀린 미소를 지었다. “아, 그리고 지난 주에 제가 지갑을 집에 두고 온 날... 형이 밥을 사 주셨지요.” 그가 깔깔대면서 말했다.

수호는 챙피하게 그떡였다. 표정이 몹시 불편해 보였지만 반갑기도 했다. 설마.. 그 녀석을 좋아하는 것이 아니곘지요? 아무 말도 없이? 세훈이 수호의 스타일에 완전 반대였다. 수호가 조용하고 똑똑하고 예의 아주 바른 사람들을 선호했다. 그는 그런 사람이 아닌 것이 분명했다.

점심 내내 경수가 아무 말도 하지 않고 아주 조용하게 밥을 먹고 있었다. 여기까지 억지로 끌려온 것이 역시 좋은 생각이 아니었다. 나는 다 후해했다. 경수가 빨리 갈 수 있게 내가 밥을 엄청 빠르게 먹는 것을 시작했다. 그런데 급하게 먹는 바람에 체했다. 마지막 먹음을 어렵게 삼기고 물 좀 마셔 보았다. 속이 많이 불편했다. 경수가 내 얼굴을 잠깐 살펴보고 갑자기 일어나서 인사도 없이 급히 가 버렸다. 마음이 조금 아팠다. 너무 빨리 먹는 것 때문에 속만 말고 마음까지 아픈건가?

그 오후는 너무 길었다. 시간이 한 발짝도 움직이지 않았다. 수업에 집중도 안 되었다. 속이 아직 불편해서 그런가 보았다. 드디어 마지막 수업이 끝났다. 기운 없이 학교 앞문으로 향했다. 거기에 경수가 써 있었다. 누구를 기다리고 있는 것 같았다.

“어! 얼른 이걸 먹어요.” 경수가 나를 보고 작은 약국 봉지를 건넸다. 물 한 병도 나한테 주었다. 내가 약을 먹고 기분이 금방 좋아졌다.

“집에 데려다 줘도 돼요?” 경수가 아주 부드럽게 물어보았다. 내가 그떡이었다. 속도 마음도 이제 하나도 아프지 않았다.

Translation

The next day at lunch we went to the school cafeteria and I saw Kyungsoo, but he wasn't staring at me like he normally did. Up until now I had thought it was weird how Kyungsoo kept staring at me all the time, but now it felt weird not having him stare at me anymore. I felt restless. It wasn't a great feeling. So I suddenly stood up.

“What's going on?” Suho asked with a surprised expression.

“Hold on a second, I'll be back.” I said and headed to the spot where Kyungsoo was.

“Hi, did you sleep well?” I asked Kyungsoo. Since we weren't friends, it would have sounded weird to ask him straight out if he wanted to eat lunch together, so my plan was to greet him casually first, but asking if he had slept well sounded way weirder. I was an idiot. Before I had a chance to stop them, the words had just come out.

“What? Oh... yeah, I slept well.” Kyungsoo awkwardly answered. But then out of the blue he added in a small voice “Thanks to you..”. His face started blushing again.

It took me by surprise and almost left me speechless, but I had something I absolutely had to say, so I quickly spit it out. “You want to eat lunch together?” my voice quivered a little.

Kyungsoo's mouth fell open. He wasn't going to decline my offer, was he? That couldn't be, could it?

“Yeah! Cool! Let's go, hyung!” Kyungsoo's friend said cheerfully, grabbing his plate and standing up. “Hey, I'm Sehun, nice to meet ya, let's be friends.” he flashed a big smile. He seemed like a very cute, laid back guy. And thanks to this new friend, Kyungsoo ended up being unable to decline my offer. All together, we moved over to the table where Suho was sitting. Kyungsoo had a lot of stuff, so I took his plate. Truthfully, the reason I took his plate was so he couldn't change his mind. The only thing he could do was follow us.

“Hyung!! Hyung, do you remember me?” Sehun greeted Suho excitedly. “Not long ago you fixed my bike for me.” his eyes sparkled. He seemed to like Suho a lot. “And, and, when I dropped all my books, you helped me, remember?” he smiled crookedly. “Ah, and last week when I forgot my wallet at home... you bought me food.” he chuckled.

Suho nodded, embarrassed. He looked really uncomfortable, but also looked like he was glad to see him. No way... he didn't have a crush on that guy, did he? Without having said a word to me? Sehun was the complete opposite to Suho's type. Suho preferred quiet, smart guys that were really courteous. It was obvious that Sehun was not like that.

Throughout lunch Kyungsoo didn't say a word and just ate his lunch really quietly. In the end it hadn't been such a good idea to drag him here against his will. I regretted it. I started to eat really quickly so that Kyungsoo would be free to go sooner. But eating so fast gave me indigestion. I swallowed the last bite with difficulty and tried to drink some water. I had a stomach ache. Kyungsoo examined my face for a moment and then suddenly stood up and left in a hurry without so much as a goodbye. My heart ached a bit. Could your heart ache from eating too fast?

The afternoon seemed endless. Time didn't move at all. I couldn't concentrate in class. Probably because my stomach still ached, among other things. Finally the last class of the day came to an end. With no energy, I headed to the school's front door. Kyungsoo was standing there. It looked like he was waiting for someone.

“Oh! Hurry up and take these.” Kyungsoo looked at me and handed me a small pharmacy bag. He also gave me a bottle of water. I took the medicine and felt better instantly.

“Would it be okay if I escorted you home?” Kyungsoo asked very softly. I nodded. Both my stomach and my heart didn't hurt at all anymore.
