THREE
Oɴ Yᴏᴜʀ Sɪᴅᴇ [ DISCONTINUED ]Haeun was woken up by the dreaded sound of her alarm blaring. Just as she was about to search around for her phone, the ringing had stopped. She opened her eyes, just slightly. She managed to catch a quick glimpse of a figure near her phone before the said figure headed back to the kitchen.
"Lucas?"
The man turned around at the sound of Haeun's i-just-woke-up voice. "Ah, Haeun," he smiled. "I woke up earlier so I made breakfast." He headed back to the kitchen and Haeun could smell the just brewed coffee. She slowly made her way to the dining room and Lucas poured her a cup of coffee and handed a plate of sandwiches. He was wearing that silly apron that she didn't like but didn't have the heart to throw it out. Haeun took a small sip as she rubbed her eyes to get a better view of the clock. Not explaining herself, she jumped out of her seat and headed to her closet. With a random outfit she grabbed, she quickly headed inside the bathroom - all while muttering curse words under her breath.
In less than 10 minutes, Haeun was ready. Lucas watched with a smile as she quickly grabbed her bag, stuffing it with her phone and wallet. "I'm so sorry," she grabbed her house keys. "But, unless I leave in-" she glanced at the clock, "-10 minutes, the bus is going to leave me. You can stay here if you want to or whatever. Uh, spare keys are over there - I really have to run!"
As she was about to run out the door, Lucas handed her a bag. Inside it was the sandwiches in a ziplock bag and a bottle of coffee. She looked up at him, not really knowing what to say. "T-thanks," she muttered. "I'll be home at 3... If you're still here that is." She could feel her heart pounding but she mentally scolded herself, now was not the time for fluttering heart moments!
Lucas gave her shoulder a reassuring squeeze, "Be safe and fighting!" He showed her a big smile, one that made her stomach turn in a oh-shoot-that-smile way. She nodded and quickly exited her house, this time with a happy smile.
"Someone's extra chirpy today," Jihyun commented. There weren't any customer for the two of them at the moment so Jihyun took the chance to chat with her beloved friend. Haeun looked up from the magazine she was reading, "Am not." Jihyun continued to pester her friend.
"Come on, you've been all smiles today and you've been humming - HUMMING, Haeun. You practically have heart eyes!" Jihyun threw her hands up in exaggeration. "I haven't seen you this happy in years. Did you finally meet someone new? A guy? A girl?" Jihyun wiggled her eyebrows but all she received from Haeun was rolled eyes.
"Just because I'm happy doesn't mean I've met someone."
"So, you have met someone! Oh, finally - FINALLY! I have to meet the lucky person!" Jihyun began to gush. "When did you two meet? How far have you guys gone? Since when? Is he older or younger? What does he-"
Haeun put a finger on Jihyun's lips. "It's no one, Jihyun. Stop blabbering, you're giving me a headache." She placed the magazine back on the table as a customer walked in. Haeun took the chance to get away from Jihyun's questions and immediately served the customer.
Lucas was still at Haeun's apartment, not knowing where else he should go. He had cleaned the place up just a tiny bit as a way to take his mind off things. He would find things that reminded him of their time together and take a few minutes before snapping back to reality. They were really good for each other back then and if there was anyone in the world who would take his side now, it would be Haeun - not his parents, not his friends but Haeun. Because to him, Haeun wasn't just another friend or another girlfriend - to him, Haeun was his other half (girlfriend or not). They understood each other in ways other people couldn't and seemed to know each other best.
As he looked around Haeun's small apartment, memories began to play as he picked up the framed picture of them. He sat down on the sofa, wondering to himself how in the world did they manage to live all those years without each other? Lucas stared at the door as he remembered the faithful day the decision to walk out of each other's lives - the day they broke up.
He could hear her sniffling as she tried to keep her sobs to a minimum. "I don't wanna fight with you," she muttered, wiping her tears away, "You know that I would never hold you back from doing what's best for you."
Lucas had packed his things and he was ready to leave. He didn't want Haeun to see how much he was crying and he didn't want to see her crying either. This decision was already hard enough for the both of them, it was hurting their hearts in ways they didn't even know was possible. Lucas would leave her life and she would leave his - that was the agreement they made.
Haeun let herself hug him one last time, circling her arms around his torso. She rested her cheek on his back as she inhaled his scent one last time. "I hope...I hope you'll find success and happiness," her tone was soft, just enough for him to hear her words. Lucas let himself hold onto her hands, his finger tracing on the ring she had always worn. "Just remember that I'll always, always, be right beside you. You're always welcomed to come back into my life, to come back to your safe place. Even if it feels like the entire world has turned its back against you, I promise you- I will never turn you away. No matter how much time has passed - I'll always be ready to welcome you back."
