“Mark,” Haeun tugs onto his arm and the two of them stop walking. They were currently on their way to visit the home of Kim Hyerin while the others visited the other victims. Mark turns to face her, “Yeah?”
“After the interrogation is done, I have to get going. I have lunch with Lucas and Seonghan.”
“Sure,” Mark looks at the time. “I could drop you off when we’re done.” He ruffles her hair and she thanks him before one of them knocks the door. The door opens and reveals a woman. She didn’t look very shocked to see them, maybe she was expecting the two detectives.
“Mrs.Kim?” Haeun takes the lead and outstretches her hand, “I’m Detective Yoon and this is my partner, Detective Lee. Is it alright if we come in?”
The woman timidly nods her head and the two detectives are brought to sit down in the living room. “Can I get you two anything?” she stands up to head to the kitchen but Haeun politely shakes her head. Mrs.Kim sits back down, her hands placed above her lap.
Haeun takes a look at Mark and he begins to talk. “Mrs.Kim, we’re really sorry over what happened to Hyerin. If it’s alright, can my partner search Hyerin’s room while the two of us talk?”
“Why did he have to pick my sweet angel,” the mother blurts and she wipes her eyes. It was clear to see that she was exhausted. “Hyerin never did anything wrong. She’s a good girl with a good heart. She didn’t deserve this – none of them deserved this,” she bawls and Haeun quickly goes next to her to comfort the woman. She puts her arm around the mother and lets her cry on her chest. It was every parents’ worst nightmare – to have their children taken away without the knowledge or not even knowing when they would be back of how their condition was. “The bastard should rot in jail for the rest of his days for what he did to the girls,” Mrs.Kim mutters as Haeun handed her some tissues to dry her eyes.
After a few minutes of regaining her composure, Mrs.Kim finally guides Haeun to Hyerin’s room.
“This is her room. Nothing’s been moved or touched since… since she went missing. I haven’t had time to clean it up now that Hyerin’s in the hospital,” the mother hugs her body and sadness was evident in her eyes. “Take your time to find clues. I want the man who did this to be brought to justice.”
Haeun nods her head, that was exactly what she was going to do. Mark asks Mrs.Kim to leave Haeun alone while the two of them talk in the living room. Haeun pulls the gloves over her hands, ties her hair and quickly gets to work. She didn’t have all day to sweep the room clean.
The girl starts with the bookshelves, flipping through them to see any potential notes hidden. Then, she moves on to the study table. Hyerin’s last notes were still there; they were halfway finished and Haeun could picture the teenager writing them late into the night. She shakes her head to break her thoughts before moving on to the closet. Nothing seemed out of the ordinary and she knocks on various places to ensure there weren’t any secret compartments anywhere. Haeun moves on to the bed, where she flips the pillows and covers but finds nothing. She looks inside the drawers of the night table and still finds nothing. Growing frustrated by the minute, she sits down on the bed and takes a deep breath to calm herself down. Anger will do nothing to help her at this moment – she needs to remain calm and composed.
“If I were a teenager, where would I hide things I didn’t want anyone to see…”
A few seconds of silence pass by and she jumps to her feet. Her hands steady themselves underneath the mattress and she lifts it up with both arms. “Jackpot,” she smiles as she sees the notebooks hidden underneath. “Lee! Detective Lee, hurry up!” She calls out to him, her arms not being able to hold the position for much longer. Mark rushes in, worried when Haeun suddenly called him out of the blue. Their eyes meet and before he could ask what she was doing, she tilts her head to indicate the hidden item. Mark grabs it and she finally places the mattress back down.
As she massages her arms, Mark shows her the notebooks. “Diaries, I assume,” Mark flips through them, “Maybe something useful will pop up.”
“Let’s hope so or I just lifted that mattress up for nothing,” she remarks and groans when she hears Mark teasing her for having noodle arms. She hits him on the back, hard enough to have him whining in pain for a few seconds. Wiping the sweat off her forehead, Hauen asks, “Are you done with Mrs.Kim?”
Mark nods his head as he tucks the diary into one of their zip-lock bags – just for precaution. “Yeah, all in my notes,” the two walk out of the room and bid their thanks and goodbyes to the poor mother. Haeun could see the hope glimmering in her eyes and it made her want to work even harder to find the criminal behind these crimes. They entered the car and Haeun punches in her destination.
“I forgot to ask you,” Mark said as he backed up from their parking spot. “Did
