3:30pm

“Three thirty…” Tiffany whispered to herself

It was finally the day which Taeyeon returns from her visit from her family. Tiffany had been up since early morning waiting for Taeyeon’s return

“Are you waiting for something?” Yuri chuckled from beside Tiffany

Tiffany shot a glare at Yuri. All day Yuri had been teasing Tiffany and it was starting to get on her nerves

“Why don’t you call her?” Yuri suggested as she handed Tiffany the phone

Tiffany held the phone within her hands and hesitated

“I’ve tried. I keep getting to her parents or brother though” Tiffany sighed

“Why don’t you ask them where she is then?”

Tiffany shook her head

“Asking a family when their daughter returns to the hospital isn’t exactly polite you know” Tiffany gave Yuri a sceptical look

Yuri just shrugged

“Well. I have to go. My auntie needs me to baby sit her daughter for tonight. Are you sure you’re okay?” Yuri said worriedly as she got up from her seat

Tiffany just nodded confidently

“Taeyeon should be here soon anyway” Tiffany reassured

Yuri just nodded as she got her bag and walked over to Tiffany

“I’ll visit the day after tomorrow” Yuri said casually as she rustled Tiffany’s hair and walked out

“Thanks Yuri” Tiffany smiled to herself

As Yuri walked out and closed the door she bumped into one of the nurses, dropping her phone onto the floor

“Oh sorry” Yuri apologized

“It’s okay” the nurse just smiled warmly and proceeded with her job

Yuri bent over to pick up her phone and used the reflection to fix her hair

As she was looking into the reflection she saw a girl creeping around the hallways behind her. The girl looked oddly familiar to her but she couldn’t quite see through the phone.

Yuri then decided to turn around instead of looking into the reflection of her phone all the time.

Her eyes popped wide open when she saw who it was

*Taeyeon?!* Yuri thought to herself as she squinted

It was indeed Taeyeon. She was stuck to the side of the wall as though she was looking out for something.

*I wonder what she’s up to* Yuri thought to herself curiously

Taeyeon then decided to move and creep forward quickly. Yuri stood there as she watched Taeyeon snoop closer and closer to her

Taeyeon quickly ducked in the hallway not too far from Tiffany’s room and peered her head to the side, checking her surroundings

Yuri smiled as she opening to greet Taeyeon

“Tae…”

“Taeyeon! Get back this instant!” a voice cut her off

Yuri’s mouth was still left half open as she turned around to see interrupted her. As she did a nurse walked straight pass her and towards Taeyeon

“Uh oh. Jessica!” Taeyeon exclaimed as she quickly made a dash down the hallway

The nurse quickly picked up her pace and caught up with Taeyeon easily, catching her by the ear

“You can visit her later. Go back to your room now” the nurse said sternly

Yuri watched as the nurse dragged Taeyeon down the hallway and made a right turn, disappearing from sight

She blinked a few times, trying to make sense of what just happened in front of her

She then just shrugged it off and made her way to the exit

*Taeyeon probably forgot to do something* Yuri thought optimistically to herself

 

 

 

“Where are you Taeyeon?” Tiffany said impatiently to herself as she checked the time

It was almost nine o’clock at night and Tiffany still had nothing from Taeyeon

With each passing minute Tiffany was getting more and more impatient

Tiffany sighed as she took out her phone and dialled Taeyeon’s father

Ring ring…

Ring ring…

‘You call cannot be answered right….’

Tiffany hung up before the voicemail could finish and let out a frustrated sigh

‘One week, promise’ Taeyeon’s words played in Tiffany’s mind

*She’ll be here soon…* Tiffany tried to encourage herself

She looked up from her bed and onto the table where she had left Taeyeon’s diary. Tiffany slowly took the blankets off herself and walked to the table. She picked up the small diary again and flicked towards the back

‘Life can be unfair sometimes. Whenever I look out the window I always feel a sense of jealousy run through me as I watch the people go about their lives. Experiencing bad days at work, having fun with their family and doing what the normal people do. I sometimes wonder whether I’d be able to have a family of my own one day. To be able to have a child to care for, experience the hardship my mother has been through. Dear diary, why did it have to be me?’

Tiffany paused at the end of the page for a while

She then turned to the next page rather than skip pages

‘I wonder what it’s like being a star. Having your own light and not having to rely on others to shine. I hope one day to be able to shine by myself for others to admire me rather than pity me. I wish to shine brightly for my first love. I don’t want to be looked down upon by her’

*Her?!* Tiffany’s eyes popped open at the word

‘Dear diary, I’ll be leaving to see my family for a week. I’m really nervous to see them again. I’ve been missing for the most part of their lives, Hayeon’s mostly. I really don’t want to make the family mood drop down because I’m there. Ji Woong Oppa is still the same though. Just because he has the tall genes doesn’t mean he should rub it in. Well… I have to leave now. Please let Tiffany be well after the operation. I will miss her very much’

*…* Tiffany’s hands remained still

She let out a sigh of confusion as she slowly put the diary back down. As she did the back of the diary was opened

‘Dear diary, I can’t bring myself to confess to her. I really don’t want to ruin the friendship that we have. So instead, I’m taking the easy way out. I will confess through you my dear diary. I know you probably already know this, but I love Tiffany Hwang. I know I shouldn’t but I can’t help myself. Every second I spend with her is like a life time in heaven. I don’t want to ruin our friendship so I will forever keep it to myself.  My heart will still wait for hers, I shall wait until I can’t wait anymore. Tiffany’s hand shook as the diary slipped out of her hands

She slowly back away from the table and onto her own bed again. Shock and confusion was running through her mind.

Taeyeon… liked HER…

Although Taeyeon had not directly confessed to her, her heart was starting to beat faster

*This can’t be… we’re just friends…* Tiffany thought in disbelief

‘I will forever keep it to myself’

*What’s happening?* Tiffany held her head as it began to throb

‘You made me wait too long…’ The dream came back to Tiffany

Tiffany shook her head

‘Forever Wishing Upon a Star… Saranghae Tiffany Hwang’

Tears began to flow from Tiffany’s eyes. She didn’t know what was happening to her. Her head was starting to have a million thoughts at once, her heart was beating faster and faster the more she thought and her body was starting to go limp

*Taeyeon is just a friend… just a friend…*

Tiffany then felt something press against her lips. She blinked a few times as she saw Taeyeon in front of her, kissing her lips…

As Tiffany moved her hand towards he lip the image disappeared, it was just a memory. She grazed her hand against her lips, the side of it was warmer compared to the rest.

“Love you” Taeyeon whispered
“If you keep saying that I might actually believe you one day” Tiffany complained
“Saranghae” Taeyeon repeated

Her tears began to dry up as more memories of Taeyeon replayed

Still confused, Tiffany took out her phone and dialled Yuri

“Hello?” Yuri answered on the second ring

“Y-Yuri…” Tiffany’s voice quivered

“Tiffany? Are you okay? What’s wrong?” Yuri said with concern

Tiffany took a deep breath to calm herself down. “What did you mean by something interesting… in Taeyeon’s diary?” Tiffany asked hesitantly

Yuri fell silent. “You read it?” she asked unsurely

“Y-Yeah…” Tiffany stuttered

“And…?” Yuri urged on “How do you feel?”

“…” Tiffany didn’t know how to describe what she was feeling. “I’m confused Yuri… Memories of me and Taeyeon keep replaying… My heart is beating faster than normal… and my body feels limp…” Tiffany explained slowly

“I’ll ask this then. Do you like the idea of Taeyeon liking you?” Yuri said calmly

“I-I don’t know…” Tiffany answered hesitantly

“Okay forget about that for a moment then. How do you feel about Taeyeon?” Yuri changed the question

“I-I don’t know…”

“Not as in how you like her. What do you think about her?” Yuri tried her best to remain calm

“She’s really kind… caring… funny… amazing…” Tiffany listed slowly. “She also is cute, smart and has a smile that could melt anyone’s resolve…” Tiffany said with a little more confidence

“And in the past few days how did you feel when Taeyeon wasn’t there with you?” Yuri chuckled

Tiffany paused

“I’ll answer that for you. You were a nervous wreck! All you ever did was count the minutes until the day came. All of today you kept checking your watch. I even threw a bug on your bed and you didn’t notice” Yuri said sarcastically

Tiffany bit her lower lip

“So? How do you feel about her now that you’ve thought through it?” Yuri calmed herself down

Tiffany sighed

“Don’t answer me. Answer it for yourself” Yuri quickly intruded

“Yeah…” Tiffany said grimly

“Call me when you’ve made your decision. I need to tell you something” said Yuri before she hung up

Tiffany brought her knees up to her chest as she placed the phone beside her

*How do I feel?* Tiffany sighed

 

 

 

Ring ring…

Ring ring…

“Hello?” Yuri answered tiredly

“Y-Yuri… I-I… I think I… like Taeyeon” Tiffany whispered through the phone

Yuri looked up at her watch

3:14am

“You called me this early to tell me that?” Yuri said annoyingly

“You told me to think about it and call you when I made up my mind…” Tiffany whined

“Oh… So you made up your mind?” Yuri said groggily

“Y-Yeah… I think I like Taeyeon…” Tiffany said barely audibly

Yuri chuckled tiredly “Go tell her then”

Tiffany paused “… She still hasn’t come…”

“Huh?!”

“Taeyeon isn’t back yet…” Tiffany said slowly

Yuri rubbed her eyes and sat up straight

“But I saw her this afternoon… One of the nurses took her down the hallway… Jessica I think was her name”

“What?” Tiffany said confusingly

“This afternoon I saw Taeyeon creeping back. But one of the nurses pulled her back. I was sure she’d be there by now” Yuri was starting to feel more awake

“Yuri… stop teasing… Taeyeon nor has anyone entered this room ever since you left…” Tiffany said seriously

“I was sure of it. The nurse even called Taeyeon’s name… She was taken to the right wing of the hospital” Yuri’s voice hit an awkward high note

“Yuri… tell me you’re joking…” Tiffany’s voice began to quiver

“I’m being serious. Down towards the left of your room until you hit the end window and then turn right… The nurse and Taeyeon walked down that way…” Yuri started to become worried. “She’s probably still at the reception place”

“Yuri… the right wing doesn’t have reception…” Tiffany’s voice was now very unstable

“Then…”

Tiffany quickly hung up the phone before Yuri could finish

*It’s the critical ward…* Tiffany panicked as she quickly got out of the room and rushed down the hall

“Ooof” Tiffany exclaimed as she bumped into one of the nurses

“Sooyoung?!” Tiffany quickly said when she saw the person she bumped into

“Oh hi Tiffany. What are you doing around here?” Sooyoung asked curiously

Tiffany put her hands on Sooyoung’s shoulders and gripped onto them

“Taeyeon’s in there isn’t she?!” Tiffany accused

“I beg your pardon?” Sooyoung said confusingly

“Taeyeon… She’s in the critical ward…” Tiffany repeated

“What?! Seriously Tiffany go back and rest. I don’t know what you’re talking about” Sooyoung frowned

“I do….” A voice called from behind

Sooyoung and Tiffany turned to see Jessica standing with her arms crossed behind them

“Tiffany go back to your room” Jessica said sternly

Tiffany let go of Sooyoung’s shoulders and went to Jessica

“Jessica… Why is Taeyeon in there?” Tiffany asked hurriedly

Sooyoung rubbed her sore shoulders as she watched Jessica’s reaction

“Taeyeon is back?!” Sooyoung said in surprise

Jessica turned her cold gaze to Sooyoung and nodded grimly

“She came back yesterday…” Jessica answered slowly

Tiffany grabbed Jessica’s hands tightly

“Why is she in there?” Tiffany begged

Sooyoung used her hand to rub her forehead as she let out a sigh

“Is she okay?” Sooyoung asked

Jessica remained stiff

“What’s going on? Why is Taeyeon in the critical ward?” Tiffany raised her voice

Sooyoung gave Tiffany an apologetic look

“Taeyeon had been informed a month ago… that she should be transferred to the critical ward to maintain her health… She refused to move and now… is facing the consequences” Jessica said bluntly

“You’re lying…” Tiffany said slowly

Jessica pursed her lips together

“No one is allowed in the critical ward without permission. I’m afraid you will have to go back to your room” Jessica said coldly

Tiffany shook her head stubbornly as she gripped tighter onto Jessica’s hands

“How is she?” Tiffany’s voice choked

“But isn’t today…” Sooyoung interrupted

Jessica nodded slowly

“We’re trying out best…” Jessica sighed

Tiffany felt the sides of her eyes get wetter

“But Yuri saw her this afternoon. She was fine this afternoon…” Tiffany said desperately

“It’s all an act Tiffany. Every day she was in pain. She would bite her tongue until it bled to hold in her pain. She would sneak out every once in a while to get help from us. She has been doing this ever since you came…” Jessica shot Tiffany a glare

“Ease up Jessica…” Sooyoung tried to calm her down

Tiffany’s knees gave way and she fell to the floor

“Please… just let me see her” Tiffany begged

“Tiffany…” Jessica sighed

Sooyoung bent down to comfort Tiffany

“I don’t think you would want to see her right now…” Sooyoung whispered

Tiffany used her hands to cover her eyes as her tears started flowing faster

Jessica’s heart ached at the sight of the broken down Tiffany…

“You have fifteen minutes…” Jessica grumbled as she walked pass the two

Tiffany raised her head up and stared at Sooyoung

“I’ll bring you to her…” Sooyoung sighed as she helped Tiffany up

 

 

Beep…

Beep…

Beep…

“Taeyeon?” Tiffany whispered through the door

“I’ll knock when your fifteen minutes if up” Sooyoung said slowly before she walked off

Tiffany took a deep breath to prepare herself

“Taeyeon?” Tiffany called out again

Nothing could’ve prepared Tiffany for the sight she saw. Taeyeon had a full oxygen mask on and had needles coming from both her arms. The heart monitor was attached to a cord that was latched onto Taeyeon’s finger

Tiffany covered and gasped as she saw the figure in the dimly lit room.

“Tiffany?” Taeyeon’s voice croaked

Tiffany’s heart shattered into pieces

Tiffany, with her hand still covering , walked up closer to Taeyeon

“Tiffany… I’m sorry I couldn’t make it” Taeyeon said slowly

Tiffany just shook her head slowly, still not believing what she was seeing

“I’m sorry you had to see me like this…” Taeyeon chuckled hoarsely

Tiffany felt another tear roll down her face

Taeyeon sat up and took the heart monitor clip off her finger

“Sun rise is coming soon” Taeyeon smiled weakly

Tiffany quickly took her arms down and stopped Taeyeon from taking the needles off her arm

“What do you think you’re doing?!” Tiffany said sternly

“Going to see the sunrise” Taeyeon answered innocently

Tiffany quickly took the clip and put it back on Taeyeon’s finger

“In your condition!?” Tiffany scolded

Taeyeon chuckled as she took the clip off again

“You can’t break your promise Tiffany… You promised” Taeyeon tilted her head to the side and held up her pinky

“I can’t take you like this” Tiffany growled as she held the clip in her hand

Before she could put it back on Taeyeon’s finger, Taeyeon ripped the needles out of her arm aggressively

“You promised Tiffany…” Taeyeon’s voice sounded hurt. Tiffany wasn’t sure whether it was from the needles or not

Tiffany looked at Taeyeon’s eyes

The onyx orbs were filled with sincerity and hope.

“Once the sun rises I will take whatever treatment there is. We will only be gone for two hours max” Taeyeon pleaded as she held onto Tiffany’s arm. “Please Tiffany…”

Tiffany watched as she saw the sides of Taeyeon’s eyes water

“If you won’t come with me, I’ll go by myself” Taeyeon said sternly as she got off the bed

Tiffany quickly grabbed onto Taeyeon’s arm

“Two hours maximum?” Tiffany asked unsurely

Taeyeon smiled

“Max” Taeyeon answered confidently

Tiffany sighed

“Thank you Tiffany” Taeyeon said sincerely

“Are you okay to sneak down by yourself? I need to get something…” Tiffany said worriedly

Taeyeon nodded

“I’ll meet you down there” Taeyeon smiled as she reached up to her mask

 

 

 

 

 

Ding~

The elevator door opened and Tiffany slowly walked out of it onto the ground floor. The hospital was still empty at this stage so she was able to walk out easily.

As she walked out the hospital a figure beside her jumped on her

“Took you long enough” Taeyeon chuckled

Tiffany looked at Taeyeon worriedly. She then bent down in front of Taeyeon

“Get on. I’ll take you there” Tiffany said sternly

Taeyeon’s eyes opened as she poked Tiffany’s back

“I can walk by myself” Taeyeon said, feeling a little offended

“Part of my birthday gift to you. Now hurry before we miss it” Tiffany said sternly

*I don’t want you running before me…* Tiffany thought of her dream

Not long though, she felt something on her back.

“Am I heavy?” Taeyeon asked cautiously

Tiffany shook her head

“You’re really light” Tiffany said as she stood up and started walking down the street

“Liar” Taeyeon chuckled

Tiffany just shrugged as she walked easily along the sidewalk

Taeyeon smiled as she rested her head onto Tiffany’s shoulders

 

Tiffany reached the bottom of a hill and looked up. Their destination was just over this hill.

“I can walk by myself now” Taeyeon reassured as she hopped off Tiffany’s shoulders

Tiffany’s heart clenched as Taeyeon started walking before her. She quickly grabbed onto her hand

“Don’t go too far without me” Tiffany said quickly

Taeyeon just flashed Tiffany a smile and a nod as she stepped back and linked their arms

“We’ll tackle this hill together then” Taeyeon beamed as she started marching Tiffany up the hill

 

As the two came down the hill they approached their destination… The beach

“Taeyeon climb on again” Tiffany said as she bent over again

Taeyeon was feeling a little out of breath and so listened to Tiffany’s order and climbed back onto Tiffany

“Thank you” Taeyeon said again

Tiffany just smiled at the arms secured around her neck and the legs around her waist. She proudly walked down to the beach and reached the wall

From far away there was a glimmer of sunlight

From behind Taeyeon felt her chest tighten in pain. Her grip around Tiffany’s neck tightened but she tried to make in as unnoticeable as she could.

“Tiffany…” Taeyeon murmured

Tiffany turned her head around to face Taeyeon. Taeyeon pulled off a smile and kissed her cheek

“Thank you for being my star” whispered Taeyeon

Tiffany just chuckled

“Save that for later. Focus on the sun rise now” Tiffany chuckled as she shifted Taeyeon’s weight

Taeyeon just smiled as a tear drop fell from the side of her eye. She nuzzled her head in closer with Tiffany’s.

The sun slowly began to rise. It’s brightness slowly lighting up their surroundings and bringing warmth to the world again.

“Isn’t it beautiful?” Tiffany said in awe

Taeyeon just nodded as her grip around Tiffany’s neck tightened

“Tiffany… Thank you for this opportunity. Thank you for being there in my time of need. Thank you for giving me hope in this life. Thank you Tiffany for being who you are, the wonderful, cheerful and talented girl who always made me happy each and every day” Taeyeon whispered in Tiffany’s ear

“Why are you saying this now Taeyeon? Save it for later when we’re at a safer location” Tiffany chuckled as she shifted Taeyeon’s weight again

Taeyeon just shook her head

“Being able to see the sunrise with you Tiffany… That was all I wanted from the time I met you. I’m really thankful that you’ve taken me here…” Taeyeon’s voice grew softer

“Taeyeon? What are saying?” Tiffany felt Taeyeon’s grip on her loosen

“Tiffany… Truth is… I was never meant to be here today… If you weren’t there with me… I wouldn’t be here today…” Taeyeon’s voice quivered.

“Taeyeon-ah?” Tiffany turned her head around to see tears coming from Taeyeon’s eyes

“Tiffany” Taeyeon whined. “It hurts Tiffany… Not just physically… I don’t want to Tiffany… I don’t want to” Taeyeon sobbed as she put her forehead on Tiffany’s shoulder

“Stop scaring me Taeyeon… It’s not funny…” Tiffany tried to lighten to mood with a laugh, but it ended up being a mangled sigh

“Tiffany… I don’t want too… It hurts… Tiffany it hurts…” Taeyeon’s grip was now completely loose

Tiffany quickly bent forward to prevent her from falling

“Taeyeon!” Tiffany exclaimed

Taeyeon’s hands crept around her waist and hugged her

Tiffany quickly set Taeyeon down slowly. She turned around to face a painful expression on Taeyeon’s face. Taeyeon was double bent as she clutched her chest

Taeyeon took a deep breath as she gave Tiffany a weak smile

“You still haven’t wished me a happy birthday yet” Taeyeon chuckled

Tiffany felt something wet on the side of her cheeks. Her lips started to tremble as she watched the girl in front of her

“You have to wish me a happy birthday Tiffany. It’s my birthday” Taeyeon tried to sound optimistic

Tiffany quickly dug into her pockets and pulled out the bracelet. She didn’t take the bear with her since she thought it was too much of a hassle.

“H-Happy birthday Taeyeon” Tiffany’s voice stuttered as she handed Taeyeon the bracelet

Taeyeon’s smile grew, but not by a lot, as she admired the bracelet

“From me,” Tiffany pointed to her heart, “To you” Tiffany then pointed at Taeyeon’s

Taeyeon pursed her lips together as even more tears started to fall

“Tiffany… I don’t want to” Taeyeon was now sobbing

Tiffany quickly turned around and pulled Taeyeon over her shoulders

“Keep the bracelet in your hands. I’ll put it on you once we get back. Promise me you’ll be okay till then” Tiffany said desperately as she started walking quickly back to the hospital

Taeyeon tightened her grip as best as she could as her chest started throbbing more and more.

As they reached the hill Tiffany gave a groan. With each passing second she knew Taeyeon was in more and more pain. So after taking a few deep breaths she quickly ran up the hill. Taking another few deep breaths she ran back down again.

“Ice cream. Get your ice cream”

Tiffany turned her head to see the exact same ice cream parlour in her dreams in the exact same place.

“Tiffany… I’m sorry…” Taeyeon sobbed

Tiffany picked up her pace and started jogging. No cars were driving at that time and she regretted taking Taeyeon out so much during that time.

“Taeyeon… Everything is going to be okay… I promise” Tiffany said quickly

“Tiffany…” Taeyeon’s voice was faint

“Tell me later” Tiffany quickly interrupted as she leaned over so Taeyeon wouldn’t fall off

“Tiffany… I can’t…” Tiffany heard her gasp

Tiffany’s vision began to blur as she started to jog. Blinking to clear the water in her eyes

Taeyeon’s grip around Tiffany’s waist suddenly tightened

“Sa… rang… hae…” Taeyeon whispered

“Taeyeon-ah. I love you too. Please hang on” Tiffany pleaded

Tiffany stopped in her tracks when she felt Taeyeon’s grip completely let go, the bracelet in her hand dropping to the floor and breaking.

 

 

From the window sill of Tiffany’s room, the second flower began to bloom

As the second was in full bloom, the second one was withering away, swaying with the breeze of the fan before finally, giving way and falling to the soil of the pot

 

 

“Taeyeon-ah…” Tiffany felt Taeyeon’s body go limp

“Taeyeon…” Tiffany began to break out into a full cry

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

3 months later

 

Dear Taeyeon,

It’s the 9^th of June today. Three months after your birthday.
I’ve got good news. Doctors are finally letting me out of the hospital. They said that I needed to stay a lot longer because I was suffering from stress and depression.
Jessica and Sooyoung were the ones treating me. They seemed just as sad as I am. They are a lot happier now though. Sooyoung confessed to Jessica not long ago. The reaction from Jessica was hilarious.
Hayeon really misses you Tae. For two months straight she wouldn’t do anything that reminded her of you. She’s okay now though. She has Yuri to look after her.
Oh yes! I forgot to mention. Yuri is dating your brother. Isn’t that exciting?
She’s already moving to the states to be with your brother.

So how have you been Taeyeon?
Are you having fun teasing all the people up there?
I’m just writing you this letter to let you know that I still miss you.
I still haven’t forgiven you for lying to me that day. I don’t think I ever will.
I managed to fix your bracelet as well… I wear it on my left hand each day now.
Do you wonder why?

That day on your birthday, you left me without saying good bye.
It was also the day that I was going to confess to you.
It was a rushed confession, but I did confess.
However… I don’t know whether you heard me or not… I get worried that you might have felt lonely waiting for my heart.

Tiffany closed the small diary which belonged to Taeyeon.

She let out a sigh as she kissed the cover of the book and put it into a box. Tiffany the closed the box, which contained Taeyeon’s wishes, diary, pens and cranes, and put it back into the small hole in a tree.
