4:58 am: Towards The Unknown
Grad NightThe sidewalk looks like gum drops. It’s the only thing I can focus on, that and Jongins slightly trembling hand in my own. He says he’ll float away if I don’t help keep him down to earth.
I don’t know where we’re headed. Just walking aimlessly until something happens I guess, I take Jongins phone and open Uber, I can’t take looking at the sugar dusted cracks in the candy road. I tap furiously at the Uber app, request a driver to pick us up where we are, I make Jongin sit down. Whatever we’re on it’s not so bad to where I can’t tell that I’m hallucinating, I know the sidewalk isn’t candy but it’s all I can see. I type in a jumble of letters in the destination bar, auto correct will put something in.
“What are we on?” Jongin asks me, he sounds like he’s crying and I can only assume he’s seeing something less pleasant than me on the road.
“I have no idea” I confess “Maybe LSD?” I stare at my hands which shake rhythmically
Jongin just nods, putting his head in his hands. We wait for what seems like hours until a car pulls up next to us, the sun is starting to rise, slowly. The sky is mostly dark but the harshness of the night sky is gradually fading. It’s a soft purple right now.
“You Jongin?” The driver rolls down the window.
I nod and stumble into the car, it’s probably black but it looks like a picture of the galaxy to me. Oh man. Space ship Uber? I shake my head and pull jongin into the backseat next to me, closing the door.
The driver says something about our destination but his voice just sounds like funny rubber duck squeaks. I just giggle and nod.
The driver shakes his head and starts driving. As we move, the outside world looks like some kind of cosmic freeway. Hovercrafts zoom by every once in a while, nothing but stars and comets in the background, it’s enthralling.
“It’s beautiful!” Jongin comments, his face pressed against the window, I hope he doesn’t roll down the window because then we would freeze in the nothingness of space. Or I’d just have a panic attack. At this point I don’t even know.
“What do you see?” I look at him, he’s wearing an astronaut suit.
“Just a lot of flowers, purple and pink and blue and they’re all blooming at the same time.” He gasps “There goes a butterfly!”
I’m vaguely aware of the driver shaking his head and saying something about ‘dirt and asphalt’
It doesn’t matter what he says, Jongin is enchanted by his flowers and I’m amazed by the galaxy outside the car.
The hover crafts soon become scarce and we’re driving along the outer rings of Saturn. Jongins flowery vision turns sour and he whimpers and buries his head in my lap. I rake my fingers through his hair and keep looking out the window.
The drive feels incredibly short, the driver has to tell us three times to get out. When we do, Jongin perks up. “Flowers again!”
He pulls me eagerly towards what looks like a black hole but I follow nonetheless, tumbling downward towards a rounded pit. The non drugged part of my brain is wondering where the hell we are but the other part is telling me ‘Okay we’re headed straight towards a swirling vortex of the unknown and it’s okay because Jongins wearing a spacesuit which means I’m wearing a spacesuit and we’ll probably be okay since we’re together!’
We me make it to the center, I can see the sun start to grow closer from above. I’m terrified but Jongin gives my hand a reassuring squeeze and we run towards the unknown.
