Not in Vain

Souls of the Damned

~Changmin~

---------------------------------------------

"We heard you talking to that girl" Yoochun said as he was driving home

"About what?" I asked as I browsed through the book

"About you inviting her over to our house" Junsu said

I stopped browsing, put it back into my bag and looked up to see Yoochun who was about to park right outside the mansion. We got out of the car and I closed the door as I followed them behind

"I don't really.. see a problem with that" I shrugged

"I think you should at least consider the problems" Yoochun said and we entered the mansion

"What could possibly occur? I mean, it's not that we are beasts who would feed on her as soon as she steps inside of the house" I said

"That is exactly what we can do if she actually do step her foot inside of our house" JaeJoong said

I looked up to see JaeJoong sitting on the veranda that was stretching itself out from the right from the 2nd floor. He was sitting on the rail with a glass of blood in his hands.

"Exactly" Yoochun said as he threw himself down on the couch in the massive livingroom

I rolled my eyes

"Don't be so boring, I bet all of you have control over it" I said

"Changmin, you have to be serious and careful about this. I'm serious" JaeJoong said and got down on the floor in 0,2 sec.

"I know but you seriously think that I wouldn't have considered that before actually inviting her? All of us are more than 100 years old. Especially you old man, and I really think that you will be able to get through a few hours just having her here. You don't have to be in the same room" I said and looked at JaeJoong, since he was the one I was referring to as a old man. Afterall, he was more than 300 years old.

"It doesn't matter how old we are. We're always taking a risk when we are around humans. Why do you even think I robbed the bloodbank just so that we can have blood around here?" Jae said, I think he was getting angrier

"We really need to go hunt in the woods..." Junsu sighed

"I only took a few bags from the bloodbank, enough so that they wouldn't notice okay? Don't drink too much of it. We only have it in order to stay strong, not to actually drink it everyday. If you're hungry go and hunt, I bet there are some nice animals wandering around right now" Jae said

"Hey you guys!"

I looked behind me to see Yunho enter and he smiled happily

"Hey Hyung" I smiled

Suddenly all of us froze as we recognize the sound from a car, not too far away and was about to turn right in order to get on the small sand road, passing by the woods and soon enough arriving at the front , the parking lot of the mansion

"What kind of car is that?" Junsu asked

"Audi A4" Yoochun replied quickly

"It's a human" Yunho said and looked at us

"The human is alone" Jae stated

Soon enough I recognized the scent and I looked at Yoochun and Junsu who soon enough recognized the scent as well when we heard the car pull over and suddenly turned quiet. The car door was open and then closed and I could even make out her heavy breathing even though it was windy.

"It's Yumi" I mumbled

~Yumi~

------------------------------------------------

I had been thinking about this for an hour, hesitating whether to go or not going to this scary place. I looked down on the book that which I had spotted when I was about to leave the library, he must have forgotten it or dropped it when he hurried after his friends in a hurry. I held onto it tightly as I looked around.

If you do leave out the fact that it was a bit outside town, on road 45 and deep in the woods, the mansion was quite beautiful.

Five cars were prettily lined up about 10 feet away from the mansion. I was standing in front of it, watching the dark staircase stretching out, making it feel like you were about to enter a palace. The terrace was beautiful, with beautiful lights hanging onto the walls in order to lighten up the terrace and right in the middle, a heavy door made out of wood, with a doorbell which looked really antique to the right, made the entire mansion look massive.

It looked like the mansion had at least 3 floors but I soon figured out that it was only 2 floors since it was just the roof that was pretty high.

I looked at the book again and with a deep breath, I gathered my courage and made my way over to the staircase, the terrace and soon enough, standing in front of the door.

I rang on the doorbell and waited as I started to feel weird, uncomfortable just to stand outside this mansion. I looked behind me just to realize that you had no idea what could lure out there in the woods. I was about to ring again when a familiar face appeared and Changmin was smiling widely and happily

"HI YUMI!" He said enthusiastically

"Wow.. Uhm.. Hi!" I smiled

"I'm surprised... to see you.. here" He said

"I am as well actually" I shrugged

"What brings you here? The paintings?" Changmin smiled

"Not really.. I.. found something which I think belongs to you" I said and handed over the book

"Oh.. I must have.."

"Dropped in when you were in a hurry.. yeah I think so too" I smiled

"Thanks.. that was kind of you to drive all the way out here and give it to me" He smiled

"No problem.."

"How did it go with the homeworks? You're finished?"

"Not really, I have 2 books to read and then write a report.."

"Ahh~"

I looked around and uncomfortoably I shifted position

"I'm sorry, would you like to come in? It's warmer inside" He smiled

"I.. uh... Okay.. sure" I stuttered

I entered as Changmin stepped to the side and he closed the door behind as I slowly made my way inside. The scent of wood, woods on fire and books hit me and soon enough a herb-scent like hit me. It smelled lovely

The long hallway stretched far and the walls were dark, almost in the color of wine red along with fake candle lights hanging onto the wall. Onto the right there were two entrances to two different rooms and onto the left was a big staircase which stretched itself up to the 2nd floor.

"This way" Changmin smiled

I followed him to the first entrance to another room and entered a magnificant, large and spacey room. It was amazing.

On the left you could see a bar, paintings that looked antique, valuable antiwue items as well as several bookshelves stretching along the wall. By the window there was a black, beautiful piano. I looked at the middle to see brown couches, a huge plasma tv hanging onto the wall and right under it there was a open fireplace. Up highly to the right there was a veranda like that allowed you to look down on the livingroom from the 2nd floor and it made the entire look more open somehow.

"Wow.." I whispered

"Cool isn't it? I like this place out of all the places in the entire mansion" Changmin smiled

I walked down the 3 steps of the small staircase and looked around again, taking a breath as if it was hard to believe that there was a room like this would exist.

"Oh.. Hey Yumi" I spun around to see Yoochun smiling happily as he was holding a book and a laptop. He was about to sit around the circle-like black table on the left side of the livingroom. I guess he was going to study

"Hey" I smiled

"Would you like to drink something?" Changmin asked

I shook my head

"I'm fine, thanks" I smiled

"You're sure? You should try the tea that JaeJoong hyung makes. He grew the herbs himself" Changmin said

"Herbs?" I asked

"Yeah, he's quite good at it" Changmin smiled

"Uhm.. Sure.." I smiled

"Maybe you want to see the kitchen as well? I can make the tea for you while you're exploring it" Changmin smiled

"Sure... I'd love to" I said

We left the livingroom and soon enough entered the second entrance along the hallway. We entered a beautiful kitchen, wide, open and full of space and it looked a little more modern than the livingroom.

"Jae rebuilt the entire kitchen. He's very sensitive about it.." Changmin chuckled

There was a zink in the middle of the room, probably 2 feet long and along the walls, zink, stove, refrigirator, all equipments you would need in order to cook and prepare meals and when I rounded the corner I saw a beautiful dining room with a massive diamond crown light hanging above the table, from the ceiling

"It's beautiful" I mumbled

"It's okay" He shrugged

"So he.. inherited it?" I asked and looked at Changmin, as I leaned onto the zink. It felt like a bar and Changmin was the bartender when he stretched him over the zink in order to pass me the tea.

"yup. This belonged to his ancestors and he inherited it when the last person who lived in it passed away. It's a long and tragic but also boring story so I won't tell you more about it since it would probably bore you even more" Changmin laughed

I chuckled as well and took a sip of the tea which turned out to be really good

"It's.. good" I said in a surprised voice

"I told you so" Changmin smiled

"Where.. does he.. grow his herbs?" I asked

"Oh.. outside, in the backyard.."

"Ah I see~"

"But maybe we shouldn't go out there now.. if he's out there working, I bet he wouldn't want to be disturbed" Changmin said

"I understand" I smiled

We went back to the livingroom and sat down on the soft couches and I couldn't help but to look at the beautiful, wide and open fireplace.

"Changmin, can you help me with this?"

"Be right back" Changmin said

He hurried over to Yoochun and helped Yoochun something with his computer. I stood up and started to wander around and look at the small, but interesting decorations in the livingroom.

I walked over to the bookshelves and looked at the different books. I soon enough noticed that some book were pretty much worn out and they smelled musty, like books do when they are about to rot. There must be at least hundreds of books here and every single one of them seemed to be inherited as well because one book caught the interest when I saw book that seemed to be written about 100 years ago.

I stretched myself up and found a dim, dark red book and took it out and looked at it. It looked like it was a journal.. like a self biography of JaeJoong's ancestors.

"That belonged to my great great great grandmother's"

A voice which I never had heard before was suddenly heard and I looked to the right to see a guy, the last one which I haven't seen today in school. That must be JaeJoong.

He was wearing black jeans along with matching boots, a tank top with a matching, knitting sweater. His skin was pale, white as the snow and his eyes big, dark and deep. He had several piercings in his ears and his short, dark hair made his jawline, his bone structures in his face appear clearer

"Your... great.. great..?"

"Great grandmother" He finished

I nodded slowly and put it back hurriedly as I felt something heavy in my stomach making me want to disappear. Why did I feel like I was embarrassed, as if I've done something wrong?

"I'm.. JaeJoong. You must be Yumi" He introduced himself.

"Yes.. Nice to meet you" I said and looked at him again

"Changmin told me about you as soon as he arrived back home. You seem to be on his good side"

"You're saying that there's a bad side of him?" I chuckled

"He's the youngest one. He has his bad and good sides" He chuckled

I went back to the open fireplace and sat down on the couch and grabbed my cup of tea which Changmin had made for me

"You're enjoying the tea?" He asked as he sat down on the opposite side of me, looking at me gently

I nodded slowly

"It's good" I smiled

"I'm pleased to hear that"

I was trying to look away, since it was way too embarrassing to face JaeJoong when he was looking at me. Maybe I was a bit rude but that was not something that I could control at the moment.

"You uhm... lived here for a long time?" JaeJoong asked

I looked up to see him leaning back on the couch and he was staring intensely at the fire.

"Yes.. I was.. born here" I mumbled

"Hey Yumi, sorry to keep you waiting..!" Changmin said loudly as he hurried back inside to the livingroom. I looked behind JaeJoong to see that Yoochun wasn't there anymore. I hadn't even noticed that they had disappeared

"Changmin, you know it's rude to leave your guest all alone" JaeJoong said and stood up

I looked at JaeJoong and then at Changmin and soon I joined them both and stood up as well

"It's okay.. I was about to leave... anyway.. I.. uhm.. have to go home" I stuttered

JaeJoong and Changmin looked at me and  while Jaejoong had an expressionless face, Changmin looked rather disappointed

"Already?" He said sadly

"Yes.. I'm so sorry. This probably was very inconvenient and very sudden. Maybe we can plan next visit next time" I stuttered

"Don't feel sorry, it was fun to have you here. You're more than welcomed to come back anytime soon" JaeJoong smiled

"I.. uhm.. thanks" I stammered

"CHANGMIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" I heard Yoochun call for him

"Not again" Changmin complained

"Go and see what Yoochun wants. I'll walk her to her car" I heard JaeJoong offer

"Okay sure. Yumi, I'm so sorry! I promise to make it up to you okay?"

"Don't worry Changmin. Just go" I smiled

He left hurriedly and once again I was alone with JaeJoong and a unpleasant feeling was coming towards me again.

"Let's go.." He smiled

I don't know if it was unpleasant because somehow it was still at the same time enjoyable but I wasn't really sure if it was uncomfortable or if it was curiosity and excitement.

"I haven't seen you in school.." JaeJoong said while walking beside me

"I know.. I was traveling in Europe when school started. I just got back" I said

"I see.. did you enjoy your trip then? Anything interesting?" JaeJoong asked

I chuckled

"I enjoyed everything. It was just fun to spend some time with my aunt and uncle" I said and stopped right next to the car. JaeJoong turned and looked at me

"Your aunt and uncle?" He asked

I laughed a bit embarrassed and shook my head as I pulled out the car key

"I don't.. live with my parents. No big deal" I smiled

"You're lying" JaeJoong said

I wasn't sure if that was a joke or a statement but I was a bit caught off guard when he suddenly said that. I stopped smiling and looked at him to see his eyes looking at me deeply, as if he was waiting for something. There was no doubt that JaeJoong was different from Changmin. JaeJoong seemed.. so.. I don't know.. mysterious

"And you can tell that by looking at my face?" I asked softly, smiling a bit embarrassed

"Well.. uhm.. I'm not really in that position to judge you since we barely know each other.. but it was just something I blurted out. I'm sorry" JaeJoong apologized

"No big deal.. so don't worry about it" I smiled

JaeJoong then opened the door for me and I slowly got inside, somehow I felt myself taking it slowly as if I wanted to stay longer. JaeJoong then closed the door and I started the car and took down the window

"It was nice meeting you Yumi. Drive home safely.." JaeJoong smiled

"Thanks for walking me to the .. car" I said, which sounded really stupid

"Thanks for stopping by. I'm aware of the rumors of the mansion and I don't blame you. It was brave of you to come out here" He chuckled

"Well it took me a lot of courage.." I laughed

JaeJoong started to laugh as well and then he stopped and looked at me

"I hope you don't think it was all in vain then"

With that he stepped back from the car and I closed the window and made a u-turn and drove away, feeling myself getting further and further away from the mansion. I saw him standing right where he had been standing when I left, with his hands inside his pockets and watching me drive away

I took a deep breath and felt my heart pounding faster and faster and his words started to reappear inside my head, echoing over and over again.

Well now when I think about it, a smile appeared as I kept thinking about JaeJoong..

The visit wasn't in vain after all..
