Seolrin’s mouth falls open. “You mean, you’re a goddess?”

She holds open her arms. “Not what you expected? I get that a lot. Just because I don’t have a mermaid tail and I’m not carrying around a giant trident, people never take me seriously.” She pouts and Seolrin thinks that she isn’t helping her case. “So, what did you call me here for?”

“Um, Your Lady—”

She wrinkles her nose. “You don’t have to call me that. Just call me Mijin.”

“Mijin?”

“I’ve had many names, but I like that one.” Mijin’s eyes are a blue so dark they’re almost black, like the water on a stormy night. “What’s your name?”

“Seolrin.”

“Seolrin,” she repeats. “Why is it that you called me here?”

Mijin may have seemed like a friendly, bubbly (hah!) girl, but Seolrin can sense that if she angers her, Mijin’s wrath would be something to behold. Seolrin has to tread carefully, or she runs the risk of drowning.

“My La—Mijin.” She takes a breath. “I heard that you will grant those who call upon you a wish. I humbly ask you to save someone who almost perished in your waters.”

Mijin studies her with those midnight blue eyes. “You must know then that I always ask for a price. What will you offer me in return?”

Seolrin doesn’t break eye contact. “My life.”

sonderland: surprise surprise

toujours_belle: BUT yejeong will still show up

sonderland: hey since she’s all alone now you should pair her up with haeun

toujours_belle: …i’m not talking to you anymore

sonderland: come on do you really want yejeong to be alone? she probably can’t even tie her shoes by herself

sonderland: then again haeun will probably just tie her laces together to make her trip. they have the best dynamics

“You’re willing to die for this person? Who is it? A sibling? A friend?” Mijin breaks into a smile, revealing teeth like pearls. “A lover?”

“My father, actually,” Seolrin says, “and yes, I’m willing to die for him, if that’s what it takes.”

“I don’t know,” Mijin says slowly, and Seolrin feels her stomach sink. “It’d be a shame if you died. I haven’t talked to anyone so interesting in a long time.”

“Does that mean you are unwilling to help me, My Lady?” Seolrin asks carefully.

“I sure will be if you keep calling me ‘My Lady.’”

“Mijin,” she corrects hastily.

Mijin tilts her head to the side. “I didn’t say that.” She turns to look back at the ocean. “My time is up. I have to leave. I will – how do you mortals put it? – get back to you.”

Seolrin feels tighten with panic, like she had swallowed a mouthful of seawater. “My—Mijin—”

Mijin laughs. “I didn’t know I was yours.”

Seolrin feels a blush wash over her cheeks. “I-I didn’t mean to—please forgive me—”

Mijin laughs again, and Seolrin doesn’t even see her move but then suddenly Mijin is pressing something into her hand. A conch. “You’re too stiff. I’m not a jellyfish or a manta ray, relax. Don’t lose this.”

“What is it?”

“A shell phone,” Mijin says brightly, and Seolrin is startled into laughter. “I’ll call you when the time is right. Take care, Han Seolrin.”

“How did you—” Seolrin starts to ask, but Mijin is already gone and she’s left alone at the shore with the sea breeze caressing her cheek and a conch clutched in her hand.
