Seolrin crouches by the edge of the beach and cups two handfuls of sand, watching them spill through the gaps between her fingers like the crystals from an hourglass. She keeps an eye on the waves, but they lap at the shore as lazily as ever, betraying no movement beneath the deceptively calm surface.

She doesn’t know what she was expecting. It was silly, to come all the way here chasing a fairy tale, but if there was ever a time to believe in legends it would be now.

“Are you looking for someone?”

The voice makes her jump. Her head whips around, only to come face to face with a girl no older than her. She has long, dark hair braided with what looked like kelp and a dress somewhere between blue and green.

“Did I scare you? Sorry, I didn’t mean to!”

“I-it’s okay,” Seolrin stammers, although she feels like she just lost a year of her life. “Where did you come from?”

The girl gives her a strange look. “The ocean, of course,” she says, as if it’s obvious. “I heard you calling for me, so here I am.”
