None were sure what to expect when Hyunmi came up with games. She did have a not-so-secret stash of boardgames, even faithfully playing the online version. Her game collection ranged from innocent games promoting unity, to highly manipulative games destroying friendships.
“What is this game called?” Heejin asked, always excited when her cousin came up with something new.
“Let’s call it questions from a hat, except that this isn’t actually a hat,” Hyunmi made up, pursing her lips at the plastic bowl before her. It was actually an empty Cheetos bowl, washed and dried to be reused again. They saved money this way.
Maerin immediately laughed the loudest, not even questioning why it wasn’t called questions from the bowl instead. It was a brilliant twist in her opinion.
“Oh, I’m sensing truth or truth,” Mira whispered, leaning closer to Minhyuk. It was a silent warning that every thing they had discussed so far would be put to test.
“Everyone will randomly choose a question from this bowl and has to answer them. These questions were personally selected to ensure we get to know each other very well.”
Already they sensed something wrong with this game. But as long as no one else protested, they went along. How bad could the questions be anyway?
“Would you kiss someone on the first date?”
Mira was speechless after reading the paper out loud, not expecting such a question when she had volunteered to go first. She knew it would be along the lines of truth or truth, but thought they’d be prying for more details on her fake relationship. But this…
“Oh, it makes me wonder how your first date with Minhyuk was,” Biah, the last person they expected to be on the interrogation team, questioned.
“We never even got to hear the entire story,” Yerin remembered, giddily straightening her back as she leaned closer to listen.
Well, for one, Mira was glad they seemed to have forgotten about Mark. Using Minhyuk as distraction must be working. But what was she supposed to answer? She didn’t kiss Minhyuk on the first date, they didn’t even have one. She kissed him without knowing his name.
“No,” she promptly answered.
“Lies!” Rika shouted, just to add on to the tension of the drama for fun. Well, it was a small payback since Mira always gave her the ‘look’ whenever she was with Jangjun. That look that obviously hoped for love to blossom between a regular friendship.
“It’s true. I don’t kiss someone on the first date,” Mira said.
“Yeah, you kiss them on the first meeting,” Minhyuk whispered, so quietly it was only meant for her to hear.
Mira flinched, her shock punctuated by a sharp gasp. Her face turned red, knowing Minhyuk had made the same observation as well. He only smiled, as if he recalled the fond memory without the intention of embarrassing her. Then again, it was hard to tell his true intention when his sweet face masked every malice stored beneath.
“She doesn’t kiss during her first private date because she prefers to kiss in public for all to see,” Kibum then translated, cackling obnoxiously.
“That’s what I was gonna say!” Hyunmi said, laughing as they both high fived each other, much to Maerin’s joy.
Mira flattened her eyes. Sometimes she wondered why her roommate could befriend a monster like Kibum. Then she remembered, the sweetness was ephemeral. So the shoved the bowl to the next person, Minhyuk.
“Who is the person you most regret kissing?” Minhyuk read, then looked up blankly, blinking his eyes. “Are all the questions gonna be about kissing?”
“No, there were only those two. I’m surprised you both got them,” Hyunmi answered earnestly, a playful grin appearing.
Kihyun started laughing out loud in complete amusement. “You should all know that Mira was actually Minhyuk’s first kiss,” he announced.
“Oh, so the question basically means whether or not you regret kissing Mira?” Biah knocked her fist into her palm, understanding the true meaning.
Minhyuk easily smiled, leaning back too casually on his hands like the question was as simple as his ABC’s. “Of course not. When it comes to my Mira, there is absolutely nothing I regret. From meeting her, to kissing her, to dating her,” he briefly turned to meet the surprised glint in her eyes and softened his gaze. “No regret.”
The girls echoed a chorus of feminine awe, and the guys added their low notes of awestruck wonder like soldiers at a military base camp.
The most surprised out of all was Mira herself, unable to comprehend how naturally he spoke those lines without having rehearsed them beforehand. It almost made it sound genuine—as if his sweet statement was worth the sudden thudding of her heart.
Minhyuk wasn’t aware of the effect he had on her, or the entire room for that matter. He passed the bowl to Kihyun.
“If you were rescuing everyone here from a burning building, but had to leave one behind, who would it be?”
The question was, without a doubt, answered through the malicious smirk on Kihyun’s face, directed to none other than his roommate.
“Ha ha, very funny. Let’s move on to the next person,” Minhyuk said, flattening his eyes as he shoved the bowl further towards Minseok.
“Hey, at least it’s a fiery building and not the sea,” Kihyun reminded his friend with a laugh.
Next to him, Minseok read the paper out loud. “Who are you jealous of?”
“Ah, this could mean talent wise, or in terms of looks,” Heejin interpreted, unknowingly wanting to state her opinion for all to hear. “The question is so deep, but could also sound a little mean. What if he’s just fine the way he is?”
Heejin oftentimes said things without knowing what else it could lead to, which her friends were more than used to. But for Minseok who paid attention to her little details, the statement brought a grin to his face. He was contemplating how much to reveal earlier, but the answer seemed so clear now.
“I’d be jealous of Chanyeol.”
“Wow! Is it because I’m tall and you’re short?” Chanyeol asked, with a wide goofy grin on his face. His sudden savage statement made even Yerin laugh.
“What? No-”
“Maybe it’s because Chanyeol can play so many instruments. I wished I could play those too,” Heejin began blabbering on. She folded her hands and dreamily casted a faraway gaze to the ceiling, wishing she could do it one day.
“I was actually jealous of something else, but your answer makes sense too,” Minseok said.
“Oh, what is it?”
“I’ll tell you some other time,” Minseok said, handing the bowl to her. He couldn’t possibly confess his reason of jealousy was simply because Chanyeol seemed to know so much about Heejin while he himself knew so little.
“Okay,” she said, grabbing a random piece of paper and unrolled it. “What’s the most flirtatious thing you’ve ever done?”
“Ooh, Heejin doesn’t strike to me as the flirt,” Jineul commented.
“It’s true. I’ll probably end up making an embarrassment of myself if I try to flirt. Or I’d chase guys away,” Heejin said, chuckling to herself.
“I relate so much to that! But in my case, I chase guys away even if I don’t flirt,” Rika said, wailing out loud with fake tears.
“Aw, I’m here. You couldn’t chase me away,” Jangjun bumped against her again.
“Right, and now I am stuck with you,” Rika continued crying even louder.
“I know the answer. That time when you replaced my miniature trees with broccoli,” Minseok filled in for Heejin’s question, laughing at the memory.
She gasped, scandalized. “I wasn’t flirting! I only tried to help,” she defended, laughing to herself as she softly slapped his arm. A move which seemed flirtatious in itself.
“Okay, I think we got our answer, so I’ll go next,” Chiyeon said, calmly taking the bowl for herself. She fished out a question for herself. “What turns you on the most?”
Rather than judging Chiyeon, several people turned to Hyunmi instead, the creator of the questions.
“Really now?” Mira asked, flattening her eyes.
“What were you hoping this would lead to?” Seulyi asked, holding back her laugh. She was glad the question wasn’t meant for her.
“I found it on Google,” Hyunmi admitted in her defense. So much for her claim of having invented the game.
“Mmm, well, I love this question,” Chiyeon hummed, smirking to herself. “Honestly, anything Hoseok does would do the trick. But I especially love it when he dances. His expression and the way he always sticks his tongue out… Mmm.”
Eun stared in horror, questioning this club’s activity more and more as time passed. A choir group bonding night, but they haven’t discussed anything about music nor learned anything about fellow members other than the fact they were all dirty minded erts. “I’m scared,” she muttered lowly to herself.
“Don’t be. Her boyfriend Hoseok is in Elliteu,” Jangjun said.
“And even if something happens, her roommate Biah is the first one to experience it anyway,” Rika said, beginning to laugh at the hilarious scenarios budding in her mind. She couldn’t imagine what poor Biah must’ve gone through as Chiyeon’s roommate.
“I do take pride in every single one of Biah’s knowledge.” Chiyeon winked, giggling when Biah frowned, not liking where this was going.
“Biah may unexpectedly be more experienced than all of us,” Maerin added more to the ironic scenario and took her next question. Once her eyes read over the words, her laughter stopped abruptly.
She was so petrified Seulyi decided to help read it for her. “Who have you loved but didn’t love you back?”
The whole room was consumed in silence, not expecting the game to bring such devastating effects. Even Eun, who had no idea of people’s history with each other, felt the frightening tension she wished would pass by quickly.
“Well, we all know who this is,” Kibum of course commented, his eyes staring at Taemin. Others may consider his blunt methods harsh, but when blackmailing and threatening Taemin to man up didn’t work out, he could only opt to such cruel measures to make it work between the two. What was holding them back anyway?
“Uhm, well, my dog Cuddles sometimes rejects my love,” Maerin answered, avoiding the true depth of the question. She deliberately kept gazing to the direction where Taemin wasn’t seated at, hoping not to catch his expression. There was a fear to see relief on his face when she decided not to call out his name.
Others, in sympathy of Maerin’s feelings, decided to accept this answer. They ignored the way Taemin uncomfortably shifted in his seat, looking down, deep in thought.
“Okay, my turn!” Seulyi shouted in an attempt to return the cheerful mood. Her eyes shone up with interest when she read her question. “What is the dirtiest thought u ever had?”
“Oh dear,” Mira muttered. It was the worst possible question Seulyi could land, and yet she did. Mira braced herself for an inappropriate answer.
Seulyi’s face remained as stoic as her usual ice princess persona and uttered her answer, “ party.”
Others began to yell in panic, in disbelief she’d be so honest about it. And to make the situation a thousand times worse, Biah turned to them with a confused stare and innocently asked, “What’s an party?”
When one thought it couldn’t possibly get worse, Chiyeon proved them wrong by kindly taking the time to explain in full detail what this scandalous activity consisted of.
Biah’s eyes widened in shock, unable to respond other than with her signature. “Oh my.”
“I’m scared! I wanna go home!” Eun cried, traumatized by the entire night.
“What? It’s a normal thought,” Seulyi shrugged. The boys weren’t as hysteric as the girls were, and judging on Myungsoo’s gaze, he was definitely not against it, maybe even imagining the same thought.
“You are crazy,” Minhyun simply told her, taking the bowl from her hand to obtain his question. “If you had a sibling, who among your friends would you introduce to him or her?”
“These questions are perfect for each person,” Jaehwan commented in amazement, giving the thumbs up to Hyunmi who came up with it, courtesy to Google.
Now they stared at Minhyun, who actually did have a sibling, Yerin. She lazily stared at him, not planning to take his considerations to choose her future mate.
“Me! It’s me! Pick me!” Chanyeol said, obnoxiously pointing at himself to get the little brother’s approval.
Minhyun gave him a weird look, planning to ignore the giant silhouette shading his view. “Myungsoo. So our family has visual offspring,” answered.
“I could do that. I have great visuals!” Chanyeol argued, puffing his cheeks in protest.
Yup, Yerin was definitely glad Chanyeol wasn’t chosen. Look at his childish behavior. She’d spent half the time of their relationship being worried of his wellbeing.
“Okay, okay! I’ll go next,” Jaehwan announced as he took the bowl and fished out a question for himself. “If you were stranded on a deserted island, who would you want to be stranded with?”
“Not me. I can’t swim,” Minhyuk immediately said.
“You can’t swim?” Mira asked in disbelief, and her pretend boyfriend shook his head. She couldn’t help but smile at the image, imagining a helpless, drowning Minhyuk in a kiddie pool. Well, she had no choice but to save him then.
“I’ll go with Minhyun, he seems to know how to survive the wilderness,” Jaehwan answered with delight, passing it to the next person.
“What? I don’t have good survival instincts,” Minhyun said.
“I don’t think any of us do,” Yerin told her brother, motioning for the self proclaimed game creator to go next.
“If you could make one wish right this second, what would it be?” Hyunmi read her paper and placed a hand on her chest for dramatic effect. “For Crescendity to be on top.”
“Eeiihhhh,” the entire room protested, like dead zombies trying to eat brains. Clearly, the question wasn’t as scandalous as everyone else’s, and therefore unacceptable.
“You rigged this game, didn’t you? How can you get such an easy question?” Maerin asked, a total contrast with her own question that brought silence to the room. Of course, she still laughed while saying it.
“I demand a redo. Everyone who agrees, raise your hand,” Jineul began a petition, and nearly everyone raised.
“I already matched the number of questions to the people in this room. If I take another one, someone won’t get a turn,” Hyunmi argued.
“We don
