When Maerin returned to her room after dinner, she did not expect to see two small boxes occupying the bed space of her non existent roommate. It did not belong to her and neither had she ever seen it before. This could only mean one thing.
“I’m getting a roommate!” Maerin announced like a broken megaphone on repeat when she saw her friends gathered in the dorm’s living room area. They all looked up in confusion, but she didn’t care when happiness beamed from her face.
From the other end of the room, she saw Taemin sitting at a table with Kibum, Chanyeol, Jangjun, and Minseok. His gaze was fixed on her the moment she bombarded into the living room so loudly, and even as she had calmed down and stopped, his eyes hadn’t left her. Her heart continued galloping in a fast paced rhythm, unsure whether it was because of her excitement, or because Taemin got up from his chair to approach her. Okay, it was the latter.
“Who’s your new roommate?” Taemin asked, showing genuine interest in her excitement, even if it were the smallest and most trivial issues. His smile could bring world peace.
“I don’t know yet,” Maerin answered, too mesmerized to look away from him.
Taemin looked surprised for a second and suddenly laughed at her. “How do you know you have a new roommate then?”
“I saw boxes in my room,” Maerin declared proudly, as if she possessed the world’s greatest detective skills to deduce the mystery of her missing roommate.
Again, Taemin laughed. He thought the boxes could also indicate other events, but for her sake, he didn’t wanna ruin her bliss. Out of everyone, he knew how badly she wanted to have a roommate, but for an entire semester, no one appeared. If only he could accompany her, but the school only allowed same roommates. Plus, they weren’t actually dating, and Kibum would kill him if he changed rooms.
“I wonder what she’ll be like. I hope we can get along. Maybe she’ll join Crescendity!” Maerin said, her voice increasing with each new thought, and her facial expression unconsciously becoming derpier.
She had such a talent for making Taemin laugh, and this time he gently patted the top of her head. “It’s like you’re waiting for a newborn baby.”
“I do wish to get married in my mid twenties,” Maerin said, smiling so deliriously she did not realize having provided him too much information.
“I do too,” Taemin said, as always, joining in before embarrassment could even hit her. But before they could even think of that stage, they had to first figure out what was going on in their relationship.
“So, what are the others doing?” Maerin asked, feeling the blush creeping on her face. They weren’t ready to talk about marriage yet, and had to quickly avert the topic.
“They’re fawning over some pictures of some topless guys,” Jineul spoke, whom Maerin just realized had been sitting on the couch beside her, perfectly eavesdropping on her conversation with Taemin. She was the new girl in the club, but others easily remembered her because of her fierce face. Plus, Sungjong would always be with her. Maerin had been friends with Jineul and Rika for the longest time thanks to one of Hyunmi’s private study session before, so it was easier to remember her.
“I’m glad you’re not like them,” Sungjong said, turning to his girl and lightly caressed her cheek. But she showed quick reflexes and avoided his touch.
“Stop saying stuff like that. It will make people think we’re dating,” Jineul mumbled, frowning at the sweet looking boy. How could he keep smiling after she had just rejected him?
“But we are dating. Do I need to remind you how you asked me out?” Sungjong laughed, seeing Jineul’s face tense up. She didn’t deny for it was true.
“Ooh! Now that is a story I would like to hear,” Rika yelled out, having gathered with the others, thinking they’d be doing something fun.
“If you’re going to tell them the story, I’ll break up with you, and hate you forever,” Jineul threatened him coldly. She then got up from her seat, her face all stiff, and walked away from the room with a huff. Everyone was surprised at the way she treated her boyfriend, but Sungjong was more than used to it, thinking she was adorable when embarrassed.
Maerin blinked in confusion, looking at the group of girls huddled in a circle on the carpet. “So really, are you guys looking at topless guys?”
“Yes, we got our new monthly photo cards from the club dedicated to the hot guys of Balgwang University,” Seulyi said, holding up about ten cards in her hands. They were all Myungsoo’s pic, but topless. Wasn’t she ashamed to hold that up when Myungsoo was sitting on the couch behind her, having perfect view of the cards? Luckily he was focused reading a book.
Rika covered her eyes with her fingers spread wide apart, so it seemed she was trying to maintain her purity, but got enough vision to take a peek at those photo cards. She loved Myungsoo with clothes on, but without… Well, who would complain? It may be sinful, but she might go to church with Hyunmi and Maerin someday to cleanse her impurity.
“They even have one of Mr. Jung!” Yerin started squealing, flailing her arms like a child at the heavenly chocolate abs presented on paper before her. “I wonder if it’s Photoshopped or real.”
“It looks real enough. Wow,” even Heejin was impressed, mentally trying to count the numbers of squares of his perfect abs.
Hearing that, Chanyeol’s expression hardened.
“Wow! Mr. Jung looks so hot, I wished I could bite him!” Seulyi said, staring at the same picture in Yerin’s hand.
“What, Seulyi? That is very inappropriate to say,” Mira said, completely taken aback by her friend’s dirty mouth.
“I can’t have real life fun as you do with Mark. All I have is my , fanfics, and imagination,” Seulyi declared proudly.
Mira was appalled once again, the color slowly leaving her face. How many times should she emphasize her breakup for the others to understand she utterly despised her ex? What desperate measures did she need to take for them to comprehend her hatred?
“Oh, that reminds me!” Biah suddenly said, clapping her hands together. She looked unusually serious for once—even troubled.
“What is it?” Rika asked.
“What does it mean if a boy and girl are alone? But the guy’s shirt was open and revealing, the girl was wearing clothes, and they were really close with each other?” Biah explained, trying not to remember the memories of her roommate, but wanting to know if she should worry about it or not.
“Where was this?” Yerin asked sternly.
“And when did you see such a thing?” Heejin asked, horrified at the scenario alone.
“Dressing room,” Biah easily answered.
The girls and several other boys who listened along quickly began to ooh and aah, completely scandalized.
“Was the girl wearing a skirt?” Seulyi asked.
“Ah, yes! She did!” Biah remembered Chiyeon’s dark magenta skirt, because she thought it was a nice shade of pink.
“They were probably having ,” Seulyi said wisely, somehow seeming like an expert on this topic. “Unless the guy took off his pants, they weren’t screwing each other.”
“How do you know so much?” Sungjong lightly muttered under his breath, though he did not wish to know the actual answer.
Myungsoo lightly chuckled, trying to seem uninterested, though he paid attention to their conversation behind his book. What could he do when these girls talked so loud?
“Oh, so she’s safe?” Biah asked innocently.
The others stared at her weirdly, not knowing what she defined as being safe. What exactly had she seen to come up with such questions?
“Yeah, considering she didn’t get eaten by a baby shark, she’s safe,” Rika said, and began laughing immediately, which Maerin joined in with. She got reminded of the annoying yet catchy children's song and started humming to it. And from the back of the room, she heard Jangjun humming along.
“Ah, I’m glad then,” Biah said, smiling to herself. It seemed she didn’t have to worry about Chiyeon for now. Besides, Chiyeon did seem to enjoy herself.
Unlike the others who were having fun feeding their raging hormones, Hyunmi tried her best to concentrate on making a possible song list for their Moonbucks gig. It may still be a few days away, but the early bird gets the worm. She seemed to be the only one wanting utmost perfection while others were more keen on looking at their topless teacher.
Jaehwan got a little frightened when he saw her smashing her laptop’s keyboard, trying to add new song suggestions to the list. Being the only one who was brave enough to sit with her during her stressful moments, he took it upon him to save everyone else from a possible wrath.
“Okay, calm down, calm down. We can think of something after you've calmed down,” he said, hesitantly holding his hand up.
“But there are only five days left and we don’t even know what to sing yet! We haven’t thought of the sound system or instruments needed for the day. We have achieved nothing,” Hyunmi uttered, fuming her stress over a run down sentence that sounded like a freestyle rap battle.
The others heard her complaints and turned to her. As always, she was stressing over the little things which only added more burden to herself.
“It’s okay to have a little fun once in a while,” Yerin reminded.
“Yeah, you should get some rest. We don’t want you to be sick because of this,” Heejin said with a pout, concerned over her cousin’s sleep deprived health. She wanted to go over and give her a hug, but in stressful moments like these, was a little afraid too.
“There is no time to rest when there is still so much to do!” Hyunmi began to resemble an overheated workaholic robot.
“You need to take a chill pill,” Jineul said, apparently not having left the room yet.
“Hey! I have some pills,” Chanyeol shouted from his table, looking up with a big grin. He took up a small medicine container with a poorly taped label on it. Written in thick black marker stood the words ‘Happy Pill.’
“Yeah, just get Netflix and chill,” Rika added with a suggestive smirk, before acting all surprised. “Uh… Not that it implied anything, you know. Just Netflixing and chilling.”
“I can’t!” Hyunmi looked around the room. At least Kibum and Maerin were present as the leaders of bass and soprano, but the tenor representative was missing. “Where is Woohyun?”
Myungsoo looked over from the couch, seeing the deep frown between her eyes. “He’s down at the soccer field.”
“At this hour?” Heejin asked in shock. She turned to the clock, seeing it was nearly 9 PM.
“Yeah, he loves to stay late and practice,” Minseok said, showing some concern for his team captain. Kibum and Myungsoo both nodded to this, knowing of Woohyun’s habit.
Jaehwan watched as Hyunmi stood silently for a while, but then closed her laptop and started putting some stuff in her bag. “Where are you going?” He asked.
“To the soccer field. I’m leaving my laptop in your care.”
Myungsoo immediately closed the book he was reading and went up to her. “I’ll accompany you. It’s not safe for a girl to walk outside by herself at this hour.”
Hyunmi stared at
