Expectations

Becoming a dad

He was starting to get really suspicious of her.

It all started last week when she simply asked him what color he thinks will suit a little girl. Pink? Or maybe her personal favorite blue? She never thought that certain colors should be designated to a specific gender. He nonchantly replied that any color would suit a little girl because children always looks cute no matter what.

Then the next day when they were out on a date, they passed by a shop that sells cute baby toys. She stopped walking and suddenly bursted out, "awwwww that's so cute!!" she dragged him towards the glass window to marvel at the tiny stuffs that were carefully displayed. Her eyes were weirdly sparkling.

Then she would suddenly start humming children songs out of nowhere instead of her favorite bands, and to think he was getting sick of her singing the same song over and over again.

He wasn't dumb. He was a great Prosecutor with a keen sense. He knew something was up.

They were eating dinner when he noticed that she had a worried expression.

"What's wrong?"

"I'm late." she stared at him.

"late for what?"

"my period."

Good thing he wasn't taking a bite of his food or else he would've choked. He awkwardly looked down and started playing with his rice. It wasn't an out of nowhere topic, he understood it was a natural phenomenon for women and they would even discuss it sometimes for him to know his timing. She hated taking pills.

She had said it calmly and returned to eating her dinner with a blank stare not knowing that he was such a mess inside. Is she really??  He couldn't get his mind out of the gutter.

No, he had always been very careful when it comes to their intimate matters. They were married but he wanted to discuss with her first if she already wanted kids or not before he throws caution into the wind when they are in bed.

And she would've told him already by now if she was carrying his child. Why would she keep it secret?

The days after drove him nuts. He was growing anxious every day. Even her smallest actions were getting his attention and he would connect it with children. He badly wanted to just grab her by her shoulders and ask the dreaded question, "Are you pregnant??"

It's not like he didn't want children, just that they have only been married for nearly a year and he still haven't had enough of her. He still wanted her for himself. And they were both so busy, were they ready for a new member to their family?

She was out for a court trial today and he had requested a day off to relax his mind. He couldn't do any work properly anyway because he was so distracted, prompting Mr. Bang to suggest to him to go home and take a rest.

He was about to go upstairs when he passed by her desk and saw children books. He was stunned.

This is really it.

I'm going to become a father.

His heart raced. He was scared and anxious and happy. Was he really ready? Could he take on the responsibility of being a father? He was very doubtful of himself when an image of him and Bong Hee with a baby suddenly took over his mind.

It would be scary but he was with Bong Hee and he was quite sure she would be a wonderful mother and the perfect partner to start a family with. He figured it would just come to him naturally, the feeling of becoming a father. Somehow, the thought calmed him down.

But why wasn't she telling him anything? He ought to know by now right? Was she planning a surprise? Was she scared to tell him thinking that he'll be disappointed? And why did she ask him colors for a girl? Does she know already that their baby is a girl? He smiled, imagining an adorable baby girl that looked so much like Bong Hee. He wouldn't mind having two Bong Hee's in his life.

The sudden ringing of his cellphone surprised him and he quickly answered when Bong Hee's name popped up. "Bong Hee-yah."

"Jagiya, i heard you took a day off today? Are you okay?"

"yeah, i was just tired and couldn't do any work properly."

"ohh...would you like to rest at home or have dinner with me outside?"

Ji Wook was torn, was it a good idea to confront her now? It would probably be better if he eases her up first by eating dinner outside.

"let's eat outside, where should we meet?"

He quickly prepared and took his car keys, prepping his heart for the upcoming news that will change their lives.

They ate quietly in the family restaurant and having small talks here and there. He couldn't help but constantly peek at her. How would he even start asking later? Did she already go to the hospital for a check-up? Should she quit work while she's pregnant? He doesn't want her stressed while she's carrying a baby, she should relax and let him do all the work. He would make sure she feels comforta--
His thoughts were suddenly cut off when a child started crying near their table. Everyone looked towards them.

"omo!" Bong Hee approached the little girl. "Why are you alone? Where's your mommy?" when the child only continued crying, she gently carried her in her arms and patted her back to calm her down.

The vision in front of him seemed like an image in his mind that came to life. There was only them in his eyes, nothing else mattered. Bong Hee carrying a child, being the loving and caring mother that she is. His heart brimmed with so much love that he wanted nothing else but to have that vision in their home. He was sure now, more than ever, that he was ready to be a dad.

"oh gosh, Ji Hyun-yang!" a lady ran towards them, quickly taking the little girl from Bong Hee. "i told you to stay in your seat while i go to the comfort room for a short while!" she gently scolded her and bowed repeatedly to Bong Hee. "i'm very sorry and thank you miss."

"it's okay! I'm glad she's not alone." she patted the girl's head. "Isn't it great that mommy's here now?"

The little girl sniffed the last of her tears and smiled brightly at her before waving goodbye when her mother walked away from them.

"That was cute." Bong Hee giggled and looked at him, confused that he suddenly went so quiet.

"Jagiya?"

Ji wook was startled and quickly resumed his eating. "Nothing, let's finish dinner." he flashed a quick smile that seemed to convince her.

When they finished dinner, he suggested that they walk a bit at the park to digest their food and she agreed, wanting to feel the fresh air.

Bong Hee couldn't help but stare at him from time to time, he was just so distracted. "Jagiya, is something wrong?"

Ji Wook took a deep breath and faced her fully, stopping his tracks."is there something you want to tell me?"

Confusion was evident in her face as she faced him as well. "huh?"

"i know you have a secret that you've been keeping from me." his gentle gaze tried to probe her to tell him the truth.

"Secret? What secret?" she couldn't help but scratch her head. What's this all about?

"lately you've been so obsessed with children things...." he started.

Bong Hee blinked in realization. "ahh!" she clapped her hands. "well,it wasn't really a secret, you know my friend that manages the taekwando school? She just recently had another child and they're celebrating her baby girls' 100th day. Of course i have to go and celebrate with them, i had a hard time choosing a gift!" she sighed as she remembered how she was torn between buying clothes, books or toys.

Ji Wook was frozen to the ground, the realization hitting him hard.

"but you were late...your period..."

"i did some research about it and it seems too much stress can actually affect one's menstrual cycle and it seems that was the case. I have this particular client that's been stressing me out lately."

"but..t-the songs...you were singing children songs" he stuttered in disbelief.

"yeah, since there's going to be a party, my friend asked me for a favor to prepare fun songs where the other children can enjoy and dance with."

"t-the books in your table.." was that his voice cracking?

"oh the children books? After so much thinking,i decided to buy the books as gift. It'll be great as bedtime stories! I especially like the story between the tiger and the-"

He couldn't hear her anymore as his world started to crumble down.

He was ready to be a dad. He already prepared himself. Heck, he even already love the baby girl who apparently didn't exist inside her womb.

She's not pregnant?

No, she's not.

There's no child?

No child.

I'm not gonna be a father?

No, you're not.

He knew he was doomed when he realized he was getting pissed talking to himself. There was no child and he wasn't going to be a father. His heart ached at the discovery.

Later, when they were in the car and he was driving them home, Bong Hee got surprised when he suddenly hit the brakes and stopped the car at the middle of the road, good thing it was late at night and there weren't many cars passing by.

She looked at him in confusion.

"So......what do you think about having kids, Bong Hee?" his eyes were dead serious.
