Chapter 7

Champions (Moonsun FanFiction)

a quick author's note just to explain that I might make some chapters "rated m" in order to insert some words and moments in the future. I doubt there will be a scene but in the end it's what you guys want :) Also, I was reading some moonsun fanfics and realized how I want this fanfic to end up: with a lasting relationship. I'm not a huge fan of stories that just hop right into the relationship, I kind of need it to build up so that's how I'm making this (I hope that's not bothersome).

---

The first day of school went by fairly smooth. There was obviously the fact Solar had realized she had no friends going to the same college, then all three teammates: Byul, Seulgi, and Yongsun, getting lost (despite two of them having seen atleast half the tour), and the main fact that Yonsei University was a little more intense than the three thought.

Yongsun was having difficulty talking to people, since she was so sociably awkward. While, Moonbyul and Seulgi were having the time of their lives checking out Yonsei. Even though the classes were bound to be intense, the three thought it was worth it.

Later that day though, a volleyball practice with a tense atmosphere would occur.

----

"Ladies, I just want to say thank you for accepting the scholarships and joining the Yonsei Women's Volleyball Team. My name is Choi Sowon, and I am the coach", the new coach introduced herself.

"This is the very first practice and pretty much we're gonna see what you guys are capable of today", Choi Sowon clapped her hands. "Feel free to use our locker rooms to change into practice clothes, we're gonna get started in about ten minutes."

As everyone grabbed their bags and clothes and made their way over to the locker rooms the coach said loudly, "Oh and girls." The newly formed team looked back.

Coach Sowon smiled.

"Welcome to the team."

----

Despite it being the first day or the first practice for that matter, Choi Sowon did not go easy on the Yonsei Team. Seulgi was dehyrdrated, Moonbyul was sweating feriously, and Solar was tired. This was all unsual for the three athletes.

Moonbyul was actually just about to give up on running the laps assigned to her and other people when she spared a glance at the practice game Seulgi and Yongsun were in. Seulgi was extremely out of breathe but nonetheless still moving her body and Yongsun never seemed to give up. Why do they try so hard, Moonbyul thought. If something is tiring, why not just give up? And as if she sensed someone was looking at her, Yongsun quickly glanced at Byul before returning her attention back to the game. Moonbyul looked back at her path around the court, three more laps, she thought. Just 3. Byulyi didn't know if seeing her teammates try so hard suddenly encouraged her, but before she knew it, her laps were finished and she was subbed into the practice game as the new setter.

"Alright Moon Byulyi, let's see what you got freshman!", Coach Sowon shouted. "Also, Yongsun and Seulgi switch teams. I already know how you work with Seulgi, Moonbyul. I'm unaware of how you can use Kim Yongsun."

Moonbyul almost threw up. She was exhausted, out of breathe from running, and on top of that she had to work with Yongsun. Nonetheless, Moonbyul mentally smiled. This is going to be interesting, she thought. And for Moonbyul, interesting meant fun. But, with interest also came difficulty.

Byulyi rarely set to Yongsun that game, and if she did, the sets never seemed to actually make it to Yongsun's right hand. This was rare for Moonbyul, she normally could easily adapt to a spiker's playing style and set them perfectly. But, for some reason it seemed like Solar was either surprised to have the ball passed over to her by Byul, or she just didn't want to cooperate with her rival. Either way, Byul was getting frustrated. She couldn't seem to place the ball perfectly in Yongsun's possession. On top of that, the small girl seemed like she didn't even want to play anymore. Moonbyul noted the frowns or faces of disgust Yongsun seemed to make towards her. The tall girl had always been observant. The game had started to become less interesting and more bothersome. Why can't I set Yongsun perfectly? Or is it just that she doesn't want to play with me? I mean I don't want to be stuck with her either but...

The game ended with Solar getting blocked and when that happened, Moonbyul couldn't believe her eyes. Never has anyone gotten blocked from one of her sets in all the time she's played volleyball. When Yongsun landed on the ground her hands were in fists but she was looking away from Byul, avoiding eye contact.

The whistle blew. "Okay ladies that's enough for today you can get changed but before you leave go by the bleachers for a paper schedule", Coach Sowon explained.

Exhaustingly, the players walked back to the girl's locker room.

"Oh and can I see MoonByulyi and Kim Yongsun real quick please." The two froze, the tone in the coach's voice was almost deadly. In an awkward silence, the two made their way over to their new coach.

"Hey girls", the coach smiled devishly, "Can you take a seat on the bench for me please?" The girls did as they were told.

"I can only assume you two know what this talk is about and if you don't understand what I'm going to say you'll end up where you're sitting now", Sowon stood up straight and her voice turned colder than it already had been. "You girls...", she paused to look at both of them. "Have absolutely no communication whatsoever." She looked directly at each person as if asking what was going on. She paused even longer, hinting for the both of them to say something.

"I...", Moonbyul started. "I'm sorry I must have been off my game today", she said looking down.
"Now that's not true because you set everyone else just fine, Miss Yongsun was the only person you couldn't seem to get the ball too." This was true, Byul thought. "Yongsun do you have anything to say to this?", the coach asked.

"I just....I have nothing to say", she barely got out.
"This is how I see it", Sowon started, "You and Miss Byulyi are rivals, isn't that right? I watched the championship game, and I know the history of how Yongsun and her team lost to the amazing setter MoonByulyi. I'm a coach for a Women's Volleyball team in one of the most well known colleges in South Korea, I know things, especially the background of the players that are selected to come here for the team."

"Girls, your rivalry is in the past, that was high school where you were teenagers." Both the girls had emotionless expressions on as the coach continued.

"When you enter college, you are a young adult, and I need you two to act like that..."

"If you two can't get your act together and start working well by the end of the month, well let's just say I was planning to give you two a place on varsity but that won't happen if you guys continue to have no means of communication."

Moonbyul and Solar looked at the coach, then at each other, and then at the coach again. Sowon clapped her hands together, "It's your decision." She gathered her clipboard and duffel bag as more and more players were leaving. She smiled before saying, "Don't do anything you might regret." And with that she left with a quick, "see you at practice tomorrow". Moonbyul and Solar were left with an awkard silence in an empty gym, everyone had left.

Solar shot up from the bench, angry clear in her eyes as she practically ran into the locker room. Moonbyul followed slowly, times like these she'd say she didn't care where she ended up on the team, but something in her was telling her that that wasn't the case anymore. Being on the bench meant less play time, and less play time meant less time with Seulgi, and that meant that Moonbyul would have no real reason for being on the team. It wasn't like she could quit either, being on the team was a requirement for the full ride scholarship.

The two girls quickly packed up there things, but an even more awkward atmosphere was layed upon them when they both started to get dressed. Solar mentally cursed at herself for even wanting to look Moonbyul's way just once while the taller girl took off her clothes. Yongsun quickly glanced Moonbyul's way while her own shirt was half way off. Slender legs, a perfectly toned core.....

Solar shook her head, as if trying to get the dirty thoughts out of her mind that was racing inside her. What's with me? It wasn't like Moonbyul wasn't the only one in the room at that moment trying to contain herself. Her hands were shaky as she slipped on her jeans and unconsciously glancing at the smaller girl who's pants weren't even on yet. She quickly looked away, This is too awkard with just me and Yongsun.

And with no words said they both got their clothes on with the occasional gulps and stares. Yongsun was the first to walk out of the locker room door, that is until Moonbyul grabbed her wrist. She seemed to like doing that to her, Yongsun thought. She looked at the contact.

"Um, are you okay with this? Like at all?", Moonbyul started. Solar quickly realized that Moonbyul's gaze was serious and not in the playful, teasing mood it normally held. Yongsun gulped.

"Of course I'm not okay with this. I want to keep on playing", she replied looking at the ground and heat rising to her cheeks at the sudden closeness of the other girl. She had never seen or heard Moonbyul be this serious before.

"Then let's fix this problem"

"No, I'd never play with you"

"Do you want to be on varsity or not?"

"Why should it matter to you?!", Yongsun screamed while looking up from the ground and at the taller girl whose face held confusion. Before Moonbyul could reply more words were thrown at her, "You don't care about me! We're not friends! And we're not teammates! Especially after..." Memories of the hard fought championship game crossed her mind. Solar took her wrist off of Moonbyul's loosened grip, her chest going up and down from the shouting.

"Yongsun"

"Don't say my name"

"I'm not going to say sorry, I can't say sorry. I took the championship title from you, but I did in the most fairest way possible"

"I know, god, I know.... I just", Yongsun's fists clenched. "It hurts." She turned away from Moonbyul who was so stiff and guilty from seeing the watery-eyed girl. "You don't know how hard I worked to get to where I am now and to just lose like that to my rival who probably hasn't worked hard for something a day in her life."

This was true, Moonbyul thought. Everything was practically handed to her: Seulgi, volleyball, natural talent. But, it's not like she felt as though her life was complete.
"You're right", Moonbyul said in almost a whisper. "I've always gotten good grades, I was always the 'perfect' kid my family wanted me to be. Even Seulgi becoming my friend was something I've never asked for but it just happened. But even now, and even always. With one friend in my life...."

"I'm lonely", she mumbled in something even below a whisper. But, Yongsun heard it, she hadn't even known Moonbyul and yet she always thought of her as the "evil" rival that would always take her victories and play time away from her. Maybe that's not the case, Solar thought. Both of the girls' cheeks were flushed red after the sudden confessions. Yongsun almost flew out of the room to escape her embarrassment but before closing the door she muttered, "Um uh just so you know, uh I like my tosses high and somewhat close to the net." And with that she left a flustered Moonbyul who couldn't help but to smile at the interesting turn of events, God, she's so weird.... but I can't say I'm not either.

Moonbyul went to the dorm rooms to look for the room "MMM4", which was the fourth door on the third floor. She couldn't help but to think about how huge Yonsei really was. As she was on the third floor and was making her way to the fourth door, she thought about Yongsun and what dorm room she had taken.

Moonbyul turned the key into her door while turning the knob. What she didn't expect was to feel someone else's grip on the doorknob and an all too familiar voice saying, "Hello..?" When she came face to face with Kim Yongsun, she almost ran away. The older girl almost screamed.

"What are you doing at my dorm?", Yongsun asked.

"What are you doing at my dorm", Moonbyul shot back. "Wait a second." Moonbyul went through her bag to look for the packet of information given to her about Yonsei. She read a part about where her dorm room was but didn't even bother to look to see who her roommate was.

And to her surpise, it was her rival.
