Rain II
PartnersAs they entered the room, they were greeted by the blitzes of several cameras. If given another situation, they could feel like stars, but the people behind those cameras were like judges, ready to overanalize their every word. They are like predators ready to find the juiciest details. The case was the star tonight, not them.
Woohyun looked around at the people behind cameras and laptops. They were all busy preparing their cameras, talking on the phone or preparing last minute questions. None of them cared about their presence yet. They were waiting for the details on the murder, he will make it to the headlines.
After the Captain arrived too, everybody turned their attention to them. They were waiting for them to start. A guy from a small newspaper was still taking picture.
The captain went to the front and adjusted the microphone to fit his height.
"Good evening, I am sorry we have to meet in such an unfortunate circumstances. Today with me came the 2 people that are in charge of this case. They are going to give you all the information you need in order to rightly inform the citizens of Busan." the Captain said and bowed before going to the side. It was their turn to speak. Sunggyu got up first and went to the front. Woohyun took a deep breath and went to his side.
"Good evening, everyone. As the Captain said is very unfortunate to meet like this." Sunggyu stopped and inhaled deeply, it seemed he was nervous too. The truth was that this was the worst kind of press conference. They didn't really have what to offer to the press.
"In the last month, three murders took place. The pattern of the bodies leave no doubt this was a serial killer." Sunggyu continued.
"Do you have a suspect?"
"Did you find the motive?"
"Was anyone arrested yet?"
These questions were coming continuously from the press. This is what they were interested in: the suspects, the murderer.
"As we speak now, we don't have a suspect yet. Because of the location in which the bodies were found and because of the lack of witnesses, we do not have many resources to solve this case."
Woohyun patted Sunggyu on the shoulder. He smiled at him and Sunggyu understood. He should speak too.
"As my colleague said, given the circumstances of the case, we are momentarily stuck. We do have a lead. We will give you more details when we have more informations on the murderer. For now we want people to not panic. If I dare to say, there will most likely not happen another murder given the pattern but we never know as well."
"I heard you are the detective that solved the convenient shop serial killer in Seoul 2 years ago. Did you lose your skill, detective Kim." a reporter asked almost amused. Sunggyu glared at him and then took Woohyun's place in front of the microphone and fixed his expression to a relaxed one. He didn't want to seem affected by the reporter's words.
"It is true I solved the case faster than this one, but every case is different. Firstly the case in Seoul took place in convenience stores where we were able to find witnesses. Here in Busan, we do not have this luck. I am sorry I cannot meet your expectations. I will work harder." Sunggyu finished and bowed. Woohyun then took the microphone.
"Detective Kim has been a great help since he came to Busan. He didn't lose his wit. I know he will solve this case in no time as soon as we have more information."
"Aren't you able to solve this case on your own, detective Nam? This is the result of giving such an important case to an experienced detective, Captain?" the same reporter asked looking at Woohyun and at the Captain. Woohyun clenched his fists. He didn't know how to respond to this. He really hated press conferences.
"I don't think what you said is true." Sunggyu started and Woohyun looked surprised at him in expectation.
"Yes, it's true Woohyun is young, but I have never met someone who knew the theory and thought of all possibilities better than him. If I am to be completely sincere, since we started investigating, he was the most active on solving the case. Detective Nam was the one that had fate in any little hope we found in this case. If any of us is closer to solve this case. That would be Woohyun."
Woohyun had his head down as he heard Sunggyu’s words. He didn’t know Sunggyu appreciated him so much. He felt embarrassed but this emotion was by far not as strong as his heartbeat and his need to hug Sunggyu and feel him close to him. To tell him how much he appreciated him as well. To scream to everybody how special Sunggyu was as a person and as a detective.
He felt a hand on his shoulder and this brought him back from his thoughts. He raised his head and met with Sunggyu's smiling face. Looking at Sunggyu’s eyes made his heartbeat increase again and he felt the butterflies in his stomach flying frenetically. He realized he might not think of Sunggyu as just someone that was taking care of him; he might feel more than just that. But this kind of feeling for a man was new for him. They say when you fall in love you feel butterflies in your stomach but it was the first time for him. He didn’t have this strong warm feeling in his heart for none of his ex-girlfriends.
They went to the side and let the Captain end the press conference. He thanked them for coming and reminded them about the special number.
“Let’s go. It’s over.” Sunggyu said. Woohyun looked around and saw the reporters where leaving. They were again emerged in their own businesses and didn’t mind what Sunggyu and Woohyun were doing. They got their material for a good article.
“Thank you.” Woohyun said as they were in the car going home from the conference.
“You don’t have to thank me. I just said what I thought.” Sunggyu said and smiled. Sunggyu was smiling more lately. Woohyun didn’t know exactly why. The case didn’t go well and he was stuck here in Busan and unable to go on with the life he had in Seoul. It felt like he was
