The available categories were all unfamiliar to the seven players remaining. They could’ve easily obtained a perfect score of 100 if everyone else were still alive, owning up to their own majors they excelled in. But with their absence, the current survivors just had to hope for the best. Ye In didn’t think much when she picked out the next category, culinary arts. It was a tribute to Seok Jin whom they lost during the very first game.   What is a culinary term referring to the organising and arranging of every ingredient a chef requires during cooking?   The confidence faltered from Ji Soo’s smile. Whatever sense of hope she had came crashing down like a bursting bubble. Instead of thinking of the answer, she now wondered what would happen when she chose the air element as her punishment? Would the glass chamber recreate a typhoon?   Seconds ticked by, and the red ‘Give Help’ button appeared on everyone else’s screen monitor again.   “I don’t know the answer.” Ji Soo looked at them with slight panic. Some stared back with coldness, some with confusion, and some with doubt. A part of her wondered whether anyone was willing to help.   Suddenly, a loud ping resonated through the room. The big monitor in front displayed a new text stating “you received help.” Someone had pressed the red button.   Ji Soo’s eyes quickly flickered to the rest, staring at whoever was now busy writing down the answer.   It was Ye In.   “Mise en place,” the younger one spoke at the same time as she wrote, a habit. When she submitted the answer, it was signed as the correct answer, and their score increased to a perfect sixty.   “Thank you so much.” Ji Soo would’ve gone over to give the girl a hug if she could, but the glass boxes separated them.   As everyone else were cheering at the increased score, Yoon Gi was the one who stared at the young girl skeptically—amazed, but still skeptical. “How do you know this?” His question interrupted other’s cheering.   “Mise en place means putting everything in place in French. We use this term too in psychology whereby it means that a person’s stance towards an environment will place constraints to the perception of what they should and can do,” Ye In answered flawlessly. He was testing her, but she proved her knowledge of her subject.   “It’s a good thing you knew the answer to it,” Ji Soo said, still smiling at the fact she was saved by Ye In. The younger girl truly stood by her principles to help one another out.   Ji Soo hesitated for the next question she would give to Yoon Gi, but finally settled for pharmaceutical science. She wasn’t sure what the guy excelled in aside from criminology and being an annoying jerk.   What is this the chemical formula of C21H22N2O2?   “What the…” Yoon Gi trailed off before cursing a profanity. He turned to Ji Soo with a glare.   “I’m sorry. It’s not like there was anything else you could’ve answered anyway,” Ji Soo shrugged apologetically.   “Might as well drown me now. I won’t be able to answer this,” Yoon Gi mumbled.   “Only Soo Jung could’ve answered it,” Ji Ae said, remembering the time when Soo Jung had shown her that bottle with a similar mind numbing formula on it. They were at such a loss without the rest.   “My red button is gone!” Ye In suddenly yelled. She had waited several seconds, knowing this was around the time when the button would appear on her monitor. But there was none.   “I guess you can only help everyone out once,” Jung Kook said. He’d like to press the button, but could not think of the correct, or a possibly correct answer.   “So we need to be logical and smart about whom to give help to,” Ye In concluded, and Jung Kook nodded in agreement.   “How long do I have to wait before the water crashes down on me?” The moment Yoon Gi stated the question, the gurgling noises appeared from the pipe. He prepared himself, stretching his head as far as possible from the center to avoid the water. Sure enough, the liquid came pouring down in abundance, wetting only his pants.   The word ‘strychnine’ now appeared on the monitor whereas their score remained at sixty. The familiar word made Ji Ae flinch, remembering exactly what she and Soo Jung had talked about that day. Up until today, she still had no idea what had become of that poisonous substance she had thrown away. Was its appearance in the trivia quiz a coincidence?   Yoon Gi grunted a little from the flowing water. He then caught Myung Eun attentively staring at him, apologetic she could not help him out.   The water stopped at the one third level of the glass box’s height, as expected. Yoon Gi did not shiver from the cold and kept a clear mind about his next moves. Myung Eun could not face an audio related question without being risked exposure regarding her hearing damage. Aside from music, there was still the audio engineering subject which could be equally dangerous. So he chose that category for the player on his right, Ji Ae, to help Myung Eun out.   “Really? I know nothing about audio engineering,” Ji Ae spoke, wishing that Tae Hyung was still there to aid them.   “You probably don’t know anything about the other subjects either,” Yoon Gi remarked coldly, to which Ho Seok slightly scoffed at, agreeing.   As predicted, the question appeared in the form of an audio file. Along with it came the instructions on screen: Listen to the 3D surround audio and figure out what they are doing.   The audio file was vague. There was a cackling sound of fire being lit on top of wood. They could hear the peaceful rustling noise of the fire sparks flinching here and there. Along with it came the fainting giggles from a distance, so joyous and with zero care. It sounded overly friendly, which made them more suspicious in return. Then they heard the clinking of glass, or of plastic against plastic, followed by more hazy chuckles and hiccups.   Ji Ae frowned, watching the screen as if the answer would pop out if she stared long enough. But the audio only kept repeating itself on loop and replayed from the fire crackling sound again.   “Isn’t this a campfire?” Ye In suggested.   “I don’t think they would’ve made the answer that easy. I have to think outside of the box,” Ji Ae said. The sound of fire only reminded her of one thing. She picked up the stylus, writing down ‘camping outdoors.’ It was the best twist she could think of.   The reply came in the form of the big red cross, the stagnant score, and the pipe that would soon release more sand to be poured inside the box. Ji Ae screamed with shut, afraid the dusty particles would enter . She struggled a little, keeping her hand above her head to shield herself from the grains. But her hands could not accumulate all of it, so she still failed. The sand entered her ears and glided through her face. It was disgusting.   The correct answer appeared on screen: drinking alcohol by the fire.   Everyone froze. They did not have to say anything out loud, but sensed the similar eeriness washing over their conscience. The audio file suddenly sounded so familiar. It was as if their voices were edited to recreate what happened that day. A deep hollowness sank in their chest, being reminded of what they did not want to think of. They were all drinking and having fun before the barbeque grill expanded into a fire breakout. Maybe the alcoholic beverage triggered the onset of the raging flames that soon swallowed Ji Min’s life.   Ye In was certain, the Game Master was trying to communicate something through the questions. Did they all have a common theme? She paid closer attention to the next questions.   Ji Ae had given Ho Seok a theatrical art question, in commemoration of Mi Joo, she had said. It must’ve provoked Ho Seok, cause he did not even attempt to answer “What is the theatrical term for when an actor breaks character?” To which the answer was “corpsing” to.   They panicked when more soil was poured out into his glass confinement. The soil wasn’t as soft as before, containing hard and sturdy rocks of small sizes. It made him flinch. The ground was filled up to his neck and he could barely move. The stylus was still in his hand, and letting go of it did not seem like a good choice.   Ji Ae laughed. It was inappropriate, sadistic, and vengeful. She stared at Ho Seok like he was dirt and well deserving of the treatment. “You’ll follow Mi Joo’s steps soon,” she muttered out quietly, but made sure he caught it.   The score remained at sixty for several rounds now. Even when Ho Seok had no choice but to throw Myung Eun a mathematical question which only Nam Joon could’ve answered, the water came pouring down on the poor girl’s head. There was no way she could’ve guessed that “the term when two objects in geometry has the same shape or size, and is the mirror image of the other” was congruent. Not when she was struck by panic.   So more water flowed over her, drowning her entire body up to her neck. She had more freedom to move against the current, but had to keep her feet tiptoed to get her nostrils above the water. Even with Yoon Gi’s considerate move to keep the audio question away from her, she still got it wrong. Both Myung Eun and Ho Seok only had one chance left to get it right, or they’d be gone.   When it was Myung Eun’s turn to pick a question for Jung Kook, all twelve categories were available again. Maybe Myung Eun was panicking, and perhaps she didn’t even care, but she ended up choosing linguistics, much to Ji Ae and Jung Kook’s dismay.   What is the idiom whereby a person is intentionally or unintentionally led to believe a false conclusion?   Luckily, this was a basic question Jung Kook had remembered from his freshman years during high school. “Red herring,” he wrote down with confidence.   Finally, the score increased to seventy after miserably failing multiple times. Hearing the chime playing whenever they received a correct answer was suddenly so satisfying.   “Now we can have the right categories chosen for each of us,and win this,” Ji Soo said. She did not have to worry about the two younger ones, knowing Jung Kook would always be in favor of Ye In. He chose psychology for her, of course.   What is the term when seeds of doubt is planted into a victim's head?   “I know this!” Ye In exclaimed, but the frown creasing between her eyebrows proved ot

Chapter 26: Truth to be told, this was probably the most exciting and thrilling story I've ever read! Really, I'm not exaggerating! It was also my first thriller, yet I don't regret reading it. Your story had the perfect balance of mystery and revealing the true nature of every player. I was always on the edge of my seat after every chapter, small wonder I read the whole story in one day. I just couldn't stop!
I'll continue in the next comment, so that I wouldn't give away hints and spoilers. :D
