IX.             One magic spell a day keeps boredom away

He couldn’t move his hand and he could barely keep his head up. He was tired. He had not slept all night long and he could say that with confidence because he was sure that drooling against the desk with his face pressed against the edge of the desk and his hands hanging low next to his body for half an hour could not be called sleeping. He limped towards the bathroom, his right leg completely numbed from the position he was in on the chair while trying to write song lyrics and pay attention to the movie. Standing in front of the bathroom mirror, he turned his head to the side and traced the line left by the edge of the desk against his chin. It was close to looking like a tattoo because the line was very well defined. He couldn’t help but think that it was actually good that he didn’t watch those movies on the laptop or he would have had more lines, some letters or number imprinted on his face.

“I look awful.” He bobbed his head down, opening the water tap to wipe his face and try freshening up.

Going back into the room, he took out his phone and made an online order for some food. It was early in the morning but in the country food delivery was a 24/7 business so he was sure he was going to get the food as soon as possible. The online application said that it was going to take 10 minutes for the food to arrive and that meant he did not have enough time to shower and go and pick up the food as well. Only superficially arranging himself so that he wouldn’t look like a mad person, he brushed his teeth and then searched for his wallet so that he could pay for the food. Reaching downstairs, his eyes closed from time to time, still very sleepy since he got no sleep while trying to master the ability of hearing two things and clearly understanding both. Retrieving the food that was brought to him, he closed the door to the House and then yawned. He was hungry, sleepy and frankly a bit smelly too but he couldn’t run even if his life depended on it so he settled to zombie his way back.

“Ooo....we have a panda in the house.” Sia came from inside another room, carrying a plate with a few fruits on it.

“Haha....” Kyuhyun sarcastically replied, bumping into the frame of the wall when he lost balance temporarily, falling asleep for three seconds. “I was awake all night.” he grumbled.

He was still sleepy, still pretty dizzy so he stretched his hand and held on to the edge of the reception counter, stretching his body a little in hoped that it could wake him up a bit. His body felt so heavy and he was yawning again and again, a weird sound escaping his mouth without realizing. Sia laughed at him and sat down on her chair, crossing her legs and munching on a banana since she was hungry as well. She didn’t want to too much on the matter because he looked extremely tired. She didn’t call him a panda for no reason. He had really obvious eye bags and the color of them was pretty dark so she couldn’t help but wonder if maybe he had an iron deficiency.

“Do you want some dried fruits? Apricots?” she stretched her hand, offering him a piece.

“I don’t have an iron deficiency.” Kyuhyun rolled his eyes but did accept the fruit, quickly placing it inside his mouth. “I just need to sleep. Unless I can make my need for sleep magically go away.”

He was sarcastic while he said that, his hand still stretching his hand towards the plate and picking another piece of fruit. He might have said that without giving much thought but Sia did tilt her head to the side, her lips pursed together, thinking that his idea could really work. She was not the only one that heard him say that and while Kyuhyun was focusing his attention between holding on to the reception desk, keeping his eyes open and eating bits and pieces of the fruit she had prepared for herself, Sia did notice the very slim figure approaching them from behind.

“I can help.” A rough deep manly voice was heard, taking both Kyuhyun and Sia by surprise.

The owner of the deep voice was none other than Kim Heechul. The man usually looked like he was in the middle of some photo shoot, regardless of how weird it was, but now he had his own hair looking like a mess and wearing a really stretched out t-shirt with an anime character, a pair of black leggings and some shoes that looked as if they were made with a 3D printer. Heechul sniffed for the food Kyuhyun had brought and then let out a Cheshire cat smile.

“You look awful. What happened to you?” Sia frowned, not used to seeing him looking as if he had gone through a war zone.

“I partied too much.” Heechul let out a sigh. “But it was extremely fun.” He grinned the next moment, letting out a hopeful sigh as he remembered the good things he did that night. “But nothing rest, food, beauty care products or magic can’t fix.” He grinned.

Sia knew that facial expression all too well. It was that moment when he got a weird, partially evil partially cute, surely mischievous idea but needed a side kick to put his plan in action so he was looking for volunteers with which he could prepare to take over the world. And he always got someone hooked, rilled up in the weird plan and this time the victim seemed to be Kyuhyun. The brown haired seemed intrigued by the idea, interested in wanting to find out more and even straightened his body, turning to look at the wizard. He was still a bit suspicious and that was obvious in his eyes. Heechul just moved his hand a few times in the air, doing some sort of a weird symbol with his fingers and right before their eyes, sparkles appeared in the air and then they swirled around Heechul’s head, turning his hair color into silver, each strand of hair moving to later be arranged perfectly on the scalp.

“How does it look?” Heechul asked Sia, needing an opinion about his option.

“Make that otaku shirt and shoes go away and I might be convinced to give you the spell book.” Sia grinned, intrigued as well.

She was used with the guys of the House doing their own thing, moving objects around, making them appear, changing clothes all of a sudden so she was in no way surprised by how Heechul changed his hair color and haircut. She was actually a bit bored when the wizard proceeded to changing his clothes, now going for a more proper white long t-shirt and a pair of rather baggy pants, slippers in his feet.

“That’s so cool.” Kyuhyun grinned like an idiot. “And you have a spell book.”

“I can go get it now, right?” Heechul beemed, rushing towards the library right after Sia nodded.

“That was awesome.” Kyuhyun turned to look at her, now wide awake and focused.

“Don’t humor him much.” Sia glared a bit. “When Frozen appeared he got so into it he sang that stupid song and made snowflakes all over the House. Even the House decided to just humor him and let him turn the lounge into an ice oasis just so that he would stop freezing things.” She recalled, suddenly feeling a headache taking over since this particular event was pretty fresh in her mind.

Kyuhyun laughed, whole heartedly, no longer feeling tired, disappointed or in a pinch. It was so weird and yet exhilarating how he continuously got amazed and fascinated by the things the others could do. Angels and demons were creatures. Incubus and werewolves too but witches and wizards were humans and even though Shindong had done a pretty awesome thing moving those plates of food, when Heechul changed his hairstyle and clothes it really looked like the special effect in movies. And he could freeze things up like in the animation. There were endless possibilities to what Heechul could do with his abilities and although Kyuhyun knew that he was supposed to be focusing on nailing his skills for the job, he really wanted to see more of it. It was like he was a child teleported inside the Disney world or something and everything  new thing made him feel giddy, like a teenager in love.

“Okay....” Sia got the chills and spoke once again when he saw Kyuhyun staring with his mouth wide open. “You two... not in the House.” She pointed at each of them once Heechul returned.

“But why?” Heechul whined as if he was a child which was so out of character given his actual age.

“He is star dazed and the perfect trigger for you to flaunt your skills. You will want to brag and do even bigger magic. It’s forbidden in the House.” She glared at the wizard, looking extremely serious

“Fine.” Heechul agreed, letting out a sigh and rolling his eyes, looking exactly like one of those divas that were pissed with not getting things done their way. “I have a place we can go.” He then turned jolly again.

“Off you go.” Sia nodded, returning to munching on her fruit and starting ignoring the two.

Everything was new to Kyuhyun. If he recalled well, the wizard was 499 years old. He was almost half a millennium old and yet he pouted and listened to the words of a 24 years old human as if what she was saying was the law and he couldn’t and wouldn’t go against it. Sia seemed to have even more power over them than simply turning theirs to minimum and that was something new as well. He would have expected Heechul or anyone else for that matter, to point out that they were older and therefore ranks had to be kept but Kyuhyun quickly remembered that such rules did not exist in the House. If anything, there seemed to be only one person above them all and that was the one and only caretaker, the negative, Cassia.

“Do you want to take the long way there or the fun way there?” Heechul grinned from one ear to the other.

“Uhm...” Kyuhyun looked towards her, hoping for a suggestion. “The fun way?” he awkwardly laughed, not sure where there was nor what the fun way was.

“Give him a proper make-over while you’re at it. He should gain something from your madness.” Sia suggested as the two were headed towards the exit of the house.

“Really?!” Heechul looked even more excited.

Kyuhyun was no longer sure it was a good idea to follow the other. He already didn’t look set for walking down the streets since it was obvious he had just woken up but once he saw that evil glint in Heechul’s eyes, he was starting to fear for himself and be seriously worried about what was going to happen. The silver haired hurried back towards the reception where Kyuhyun had left his bag and remove the content, returning by the other with it. He passed it on to Kyuhyun and he accepted it but he couldn’t help but frown, not understanding why he needed that bag in the first place. They stopped in front of the House, right at the door and before the youngster could even straighten his body, lights moved around him and he started turning dizzy. He could see wooden flooring and that made him feel weird because he was still on the ground outside of the House so he closed his eyes so that he wouldn’t feel so strange in the stomach anymore.

He felt like puking. A few seconds later he understood why he had been given the bag. The wooden flooring he had seen although he had been standing on ground was now actually under his feet and he had trouble standing up since his body was leaning to the side but Heechul did not seem to give importance to that. It took about a minute but he dealt with his sickness all by himself and when he could finally look around, he saw a pretty small room, all out of wood, looking something like a cottage. He expected to see a big pot like the witches had in stories or movies but no matter how hard he looked, he couldn’t find one.

“I don’t have a pot to boil you inside but I do have a wand.” Heechul spoke right into Kyuhyun’s nape, sounding every bit as mischievous as before.

“You do?” Kyuhyun instantly turned around, getting dizzy for another few seconds.

“Yes. Magic works better than you use objects as points of transfer. The older the object, the better it works. A branch of a very old tree or artifacts work the best. Magic is too powerful so it needs a point of transfer. The magic basically forms inside the object and grows before being released.” Heechul casually talked, moving in the room and pulling out his phone  to check what time it was.

“But you didn’t use any.” Kyuhyun frowned, not sure if he was supposed to follow the other or stay still.

“I am a wizard with experience. I only need it now for big spells.” Heechul laughed. “Alrighty now...this was a transportation spell. From the House here. What do you want to see?” he questioned the brown haired, looking very confident in his abilities.

“Can you relieve my tiredness first? I spent all night figuring out how to use my ability and I barely slept.” Kyuhyun asked first, wishing he could stop yawning.

“Hm...let’s see.” Heechul moved around the boy, even smelling him from time to time.

It reminded Kyuhyun of those moments in movies when a witch would go around in circles around the victim, laughing like a maniac and caring the out of their target but at least he could be relieved that Heechul was walking and not flying and instead of making witch like sounds he was just looking at him. The brown haired flinched and froze in place, eyes opening wide in surprise when the other put both his hands on his shoulders and then pressed his body down. It was weird how instead of feeling hurt, he was starting to feel at ease, his body relaxing and his eyes closing.  He couldn’t see behind himself but around the hands of the silver head there were streams of light that flowed from the hands into Kyuhyun’s body.

“I can prepare what you people call potions but they are mostly like magic energizers. Nothing can replace actual sleep.” Heechul spoke in a more serious voice, slapping his hands against Kyuhyun’s shoulder a few minutes later.

“So....potions are....  drinks for different purposes?” Kyuhyun mo
