Prologue

*ring…ring…ring*

From his office chair, the president of the most successful company in Seoul reached over to his phone on his table. Wondering why anyone would call him this late at night, he answered, “Hello?”

“Hello. You do happen to be Mr. Hwang, yes?”

Mr. Hwang shivered as the stone-cold voice entered his ears. Nevertheless he questioned the stranger. “Yes, I am. What business do you have with me,” he checked his watch, “at 1:00 in the morning? I am a busy man; quickly state your reason for calling me before I hang up.”

Mr. Hwang heard a chuckle. “Now, now. What if I were to say that I currently have your precious daughter in my hands?”

“Is this some kind of stupid prank?” Furious with this sick joke, Mr. Hwang exploded with anger. His daughter was his precious gem and he felt fear.

“Oh no, not at all. Now if you would listen to my off-”

“Please hold on! I must check something.” The tone of this stranger told Mr. Hwang that this was a time to panic. Quickly, he whipped out his cell phone and dialed his daughter’s number. Relieved, as he heard the familiar sound of an answered call, Mr. Hwang asked, “Oh Stephanie? Thank God you answered…”

The stone-cold voice answered Mr. Hwang in place of Stephanie. “Oh yes. Be glad I answered. If you had wasted another second of my time, I would have killed your dear Stephanie.” His voice implied that there would be no interruption by Mr. Hwang. “Now as I was saying from our previous conversation, I would like you to give us a constant supply of money to fund our…how to say this…experiments.”  

“Only if Stephanie is brought back to me safe and sound.”

Mr. Hwang heard a deep sigh as if he was asking an obvious and stupid question. “I can’t just do that, can I? You see, I thought I could use her as my test subject. I’m sure you won’t mind if I use her if she’s still alive. Oh, don’t worry. I’ll make sure to give you proof that Tiffany is well and alive until I have successfully finished my experiments…after that, who knows what I’ll do to her?”

A hoarse laugh filled Mr. Hwang’s eardrums but he could only hear the loud pumping of his heart as he began to sink all of this information into his brain. "Stephanie Miyoung Hwang was kidnapped. Stephanie was at the line of life and death. Stephanie was going to be used as a human lab rat. Stephanie was not here with me, safe, like I promised her."

Desperate, he yelled into the phone, “Please! I’ll give you what you want. Please...just let…her...be safe.”

“Now that’s what I like to hear.”

“W-what are you planning to do to her?” Mr. Hwang feared the answer. He could almost feel an eerie smile form across the stranger's lips, even though he couldn't see the evil man.

“Just the usual. You know…immortality.”
