Heartbeat

A/N: Some violence and swearing ahead. If any of that bothers you, please read with caution! (It's not that severe though, don't worry).

“Oppa! Is that for me?” Jungha outstretched her small hands, beckoning for the teddy bear in Jungkook’s hands.

Jungkook plopped the teddy bear into his sister’s little hands, ruffling her short thin hair. It had just begun to grow back. The bone marrow transplant had been successful, and his baby sister had survived.

She was the spitting image of her mother. They both had the same soft heart-shaped face, filled with round doe-like eyes and a sharp nose. Jungkook was proud of her uncanny resemblence. It was as if his mother had survived through Jungha.

Does she remember mom? Jungkook thought.

“Of course it’s for you Jungie.” Jungkook sat on the edge of the hospital bed, watching Jungha squeeze the teddy bear in delight. “Are you excited to go home?”

Jungha’s eyes lit up at Jungkook’s question. “Home?”

“Yeah. Your oppa’s are waiting for you.”

A giggle left Jungha’s lips as she bashfully looked down at her teddy bear. “Even Taehyung-oppa?”

Jungkook let out a small groan. That womanizer even managed to seduce his little 9-year old sister. “Do you like him that much?”

Jungha nodded her small head, her doe-like eyes twinkling with happiness. “Oppa visited me almost everyday. All the oppa’s visited me but Taehyung-oppa came the most.”

Jungkook softened at Jungha’s words. Taehyung may seem like an immature child at times, yet inside, he was truly caring...His hyung’s really did think of Jungha as their own little sister.

“Did you have fun with them?” Jungkook couldn’t help but feel an immense sense of guilt. He wasn’t there to comfort his baby sister when she was in the most pain; when she was the most scared. What kind of brother am I?

As if reading the guilt in Jungkook’s eyes, Jungha reached out a small hand and Jungkook’s cheek. She was strangely mature for her age. She never asked where Jungkook was or complained about his absence.

No one ever told her the details of Jungkook’s disappearance, yet she never forced out an answer. It was almost as if she already knew.

“I had a lot of fun with them oppa. Don’t worry.”

Jungkook felt like a fool. Even when others saw Jungkook as an emotionless figure that was impossible to understand, his sister could read him like an open book. Her eyes seemed to be piercing a hole into Jungkook’s soul, analyzing everything that he was thinking.

Pushing himself off the bed, he gave Jungha a tight-lipped smile. “Oppa has to go now.” A flash of disappointment crossed Jungha’s face, but she quickly replaced it with an understanding smile. “You get discharged in two days so wait patiently until then, okay?”

He left. Again, he escaped his little sister and her wise countenance. He couldn’t have her delving any deeper into him. There were things he didn’t want her to see; things even he didn’t want to see.

He found himself resenting himself. It was difficult to face Jungha, knowing that the money that saved her was tainted; tainted with dirty, innocent blood.

It wasn't her fault though. She didn't even know. It was his fault; solely his.

Pulling the hood of his tattered black sweater over his head, Jungkook headed out the hospital and into the cool night. The cool air seeped through the holes of his sweater, enveloping him in a sense of alertness.

He walked down the relatively empty streets, trying to get as far away from the stuffy hospital as he could. He kept his eyes to the ground, avoiding any potential eye-contact. He didn’t want people looking at him. He didn’t want people knowing him.

He felt dirty. Each time someone looked at him, he saw it as a stare of judgement. A stare that looked down at his worthless and messed up state.

“Jeon Jungkook?” A thin voice called out from behind Jungkook, immediately sending shivers down his spine.

He recognized the voice. In fact, how could he ever forget?

Slowly, he forced his heavy feet to turn around and face the haunting speaker.

“Jung Taekwoon.” The name left Jungkook’s mouth like a whisper, contaminating the crisp air like poison.

The man in front of Jungkook smiled, or at least tried to. It came out as more of a sneer, evidence that the man rarely ever smiled. His hawk-like eyes observed Jungkook’s every motion, calculating the emotions that were running across his face.

Anger. Regret. Shame. Hate.

Taekwoon’s crony, Han Sanghyuk, stood around almost lazily, tugging at his gum with his index finger. He repeated a dull process of stretching the gum out and then rolling it back up into his mouth.

“I see you’ve been released from jail.” Taekwoon chuckled. “How was it, living in a cell for a year?”

Jungkook let out a hollow laugh. “It was just splendid, all thanks to you.” He menacingly glared up at Taekwoon through the strands of his hair and added, “How was it? Living under the foot of Park Il-gun? Are you still groveling at his feet like the last time I saw you?”

There was barely enough time for Jungkook to react when Taekwoon strided forward, slamming Jungkook against the rough brick wall. The air rushed out of Jungkook’s lungs, but a firm sneer remained embedded on his face.

With his hand still squeezing Jungkook’s neck, Taekwoon leaned in towards Jungkook until his breath fanned across his face, the scent of stale cigarettes and booze hitting his nose.

“Don’t you dare ing talk about Park Il-gun like that. After all he’s done for you, you dare speak about him like that? You’re a piece of ungrateful trash.”

Specks of spit littered Jungkook’s face. “Park Il-gun gave me nothing,” he hissed. “He never gave, he only took. He knew he was going to use me in the first place. I was used you . Just like he’s using you.”

Jungkook’s words were silenced by a punch. Taekwoon’s fist connected with Jungkook’s jaw, rattling his brain. “Shut the hell up. Don't act all high and mightly when you're nothing but a worthless bastard.”

Another punch connected with Jungkook’s stomach, sending him doubling over in pain. He gasped for air as he clutched onto his stomach, trying to regain his composure, but the stars in his eyes were not clearing up.

He flung forward onto the ground as Sanghyuk yanked his hair, digging his nails into Jungkook’s scalp. The cold asphalt felt like hell against Jungkook’s knees and arms, but he sprawled on the ground, stuck under Taekwoon’s sneakers.

The two continued to beat Jungkook, slamming their feet against his limp body repeatedly. Jungkook felt as if his bones were shattering, a concentrated pain that seemed to seep into his core.

But he didn’t fight back. He layed on the hard ground, not even attempting to shield his body from the blows. There was no use in fighting for a life that even he didn’t want. He almost smiled thinking of how everything would finally be over...how he would finally be able to see Jaein again.

His hyung’s would take care of Jungha. She was in good hands, he was sure.

Frustrated at Jungkook’s lack of response, Taekwoon grasped a fistful of Jungkook’s hair and yanked his head off the ground while Sanghyuk continued to kick at the motionless body.

“Beg. Ask me to spare your life, and maybe I’ll think about it.” Taekwoon taunted, a murderous glint in his eyes.

Jungkook stared up at Taekwoon with dead eyes. After spitting blood out of his mouth, he firmly stated with such determination that it even took Taekwoon aback: “Kill me.”

Taekwoon roared in fury and slammed Jungkook’s head against the concrete. The impact sent currents of pain through Jungkook’s body. An immediate sense of numbness spread throughout his body.

“Seeing as how cocky you're acting, you seem to have forgotten about that girl that died because of you.” Taekwoon whispered. “I’ll inform Il-gun about your return. You’ll be hearing from him soon.”

The footsteps of the two slowly turned faint as they left Jungkook on the ground. Was this what dying felt like? Everything around him seemed to be closing in, his vision turning dimmer and dimmer. He was silently counting down the seconds to his death.

Would Jaein wait for me? I always wanted to apologize. Tell her how much I loved her. Tell her-

“, Jungkook! Is that you? Why the hell are you on the ground?” A hysterical voice entered Jungkook’s buzzing ears, interupting his thoughts.

Warm hands enveloped his head, cradling his limp body in their arms as they desperately tried to revive him. A faint smell of lilac surrounded the air as the person shifted around, comforting Jungkook.

A small smile formed onto Jungkook’s lips.

I made it to Heaven, he thought. Right into Jaein’s arms.

A/N: Cough. Yes, I did use Vixx in this lol. I hope none of you are too confused on who Park Il-gun (he's an OC) is. More of him will be revealed later, but just know that they all have a past together.
