In the West Market she buys a saddle,
In the South Market she buys a bridle,
In the North Market she buys a long whip
"Hungry?"
Mulan looked up, startled, to see Luhan waiting for her answer.
"Uh, no," she replied, though she hadn't eaten since breakfast. She looked around herself at the sky. The sun had almost set.
Luhan shrugged.
"Suit yourself."
He reached into the cloth bag he was carrying and pulled out a small bundle. Inside was a rather impressive assortment of dried fruits and nuts. He took a shiny, red berry and chewed it slowly, making sure to emphasize the sweetness of the fruit by smiling widely and his red-stained lips when he was finished.
Mulan felt her stomach grumbling.
Luhan looked up and laughed at the sound, before holding the bag out towards her.
Gratefully, the girl accepted a handful of the contents and slowly chewed on them.
"Why don't you have anything to eat?" he asked, curious. "After all, you are carrying such a large bag? What have you got inside of it?"
My father's armour and helmet that I stole when he was asleep.
"Clothes."
Luhan raised his eyebrows at her.
"Are you sure? What would a young maiden be doing in the countryside, alone, carrying a large bag and being accompanied by a horse?" he asked, narrowing his eyes in suspicion.
"I uh - " Mulan tried to say.
"Why did you really buy the saddle and the other equipment?"
"For - "
"And why would you be carrying such bulky items? Unless you knew that you'd have a place to put it."
