Girlfriend? no. Friends? maybe...

Playing as Cupid

It is common even in the modern world to have arranged marriages or blind dates as sometimes, the fates don’t always bring two together but sometimes their own parents or a chance of luck from a dating site. For Joshua Hong, it was a rather common thing as his parents or one parent had always wanted to merge with other companies or seek comfort that the future of his family’s business will remain for a long time. His father has always been the one to set him up for blind dates and so forth, and Joshua had turned down about every single girl.

“What do you want?”

“That’s no way to speak to your old man.” The elder chuckled on the other line. Joshua rolled his eye and wondered why this man was even his father.

“You have a date at the café, you usually go to. It’s the heiress of the telecommunication company that I was talking about last time we met.”

“What if I don’t want to go?” he challenged his father and old man chuckled, “Josh, you only need to marry one and the rest you can play. You don’t even have to stay loyal to the one you marry.”

That was it. They always said like father, like son. This is why this man was his father because both have this hunger for woman, and for some reason they could never get enough of them. It was the reason why his mother is so lonely for the last three years.

“Why do you say that father? I thought you love Mum.” He said in a mocking way.

The tone of his father’s voice changed to a tensed and serious tone, “I love your mother. But like I said, you only have to marry one and play with the rest.”

“You know I was always curious as to why you go on so many business trips alone, are you hiding a woman, father?” he dared to mock his father.

“It’s not like your mother should care what I do, besides what is her business is hers and what is mine is mine.” His father snapped and Joshua mentally laughed.

“Right. I have to ask is she younger than me? You’re own son?”

“Shut up, boy. You will go to that blind date with the young heiress, do you understand?”

Joshua let out a sigh, being the obedient son he is he agreed and when they had ended the call he threw his phone onto his bed. He undressed himself and put on a dress shirt before slapping on some jeans and wearing a coat, he had realised it had become significantly colder and he had a feeling it would snow soon.

Or maybe the snow had already came as he walked out to discover that the world was coated with layers of ice that looked soft to touch but burnt through one hands due to its freezing temperature. He walked towards the café and went to his blind date preparing to space out and pretend to be interested. Honestly, he found playing with other girls more fun than these rich dumb es that only knew how to cake their face and get plastic surgery.

In the midst of their conversation that mainly consisted of Joshua sitting and pretending to care about the young heiress, his attention turned from the window of people walking pass to a particular women who ran out of the café that he was currently in. By instinct he stood up and ran out of the café as clearly she was upset and wasn’t looking where she was going. Seyoung walked out of the café more pissed off than ever. Her ex clearly was cheating on her and he still had the guts to beg her to come back to him, ‘what a ing bastard.’ She thought as she walked across the street suddenly she heard a loud honk from a truck and she saw her life flash before her eyes. Before her body could react, a force pulled her back and she ran into someone’s chest.

“Yah! Are you crazy!? Why didn’t you look before you walked across the road? Are you trying to kill yourself?!”

She was bombarded with questions that were too fast to process, as her current focus was on what had just happened.  Joshua saw her terrified expression and pulled her close into a warm embrace, he softly brushed her hair out of her face and her back. Her breathing that was quick and too sudden had calmed down and turned into soft, deep breathes.

“Are you okay?”

Seyoung finally responded and looked up at him before distancing herself away from him. “Yes, thank you for saving me.”

“Don’t worry about it…” Joshua rubbed his neck, when he saw her fragile, broken state again he only wanted to engulf her into another hug.

“Do you want to come with me?”

“No, it’s okay. I have to get home.” Said Seyoung, about to leave but she was held back by Joshua’s hand on her wrist.

“Come on.” He pulled her along into the café. Seyoung resisted him but he was too strong and she was forced to sit down with his blind date and him.

The young woman who looked the same age as her looked back at her, almost analysing her. Seyoung gave her a blank expression and continued to drink her hot chocolate. The heiress frowned when she saw Joshua bring another woman to their table and was confused as she remember his father had told her that he was single.

“Who is she?”

“The question is who are you?” Joshua asked with some venom in his voice as he sipped onto his iced Americano.

“I’m one of the youngest-“

“She’s my girlfriend. So don’t even think about marriage with me.” Joshua cut the poor girl off. Seyoung choked on her hot chocolate and Joshua gave her a soft pat on her back to help her.

“Don’t listen to him, I’m not his-“

At that moment she felt his hands squeezed hers, almost like he was telling her that it was a onetime thing. Seyoung looked at him and he gave her a small smile that asked her to help him out. She let out a sigh and nodded.

“This is my girlfriend, Seyoung Lee.”

The young woman scoffed at Joshua’s announcement. “How come your father told me you were single?”

“My father? How do you know my father?” asked Joshua, mildly amused.

“Obviously anyone would know your father.” She flipped her hair and looked at her manicured fingers.

“How do you know my father personally?”

Suddenly the young lady froze and Joshua leaned back in his chair with an amused smirk. He knew that his father had gone shopping for a gift and asked him one day if he would buy a gift like that for one of his girls. Joshua always thought it was rather suspicious.

“That bracelet you’re wearing.” He gestured to the gold object that hung loosely on her wrist, “Did my father give it to you?”

The heiress expression changed from a stunned to shock expression, and Joshua watched her lips quiver and her hand suddenly grasped the bracelet. Joshua couldn’t be more contented at the moment at watching her quiver and shake from the adrenaline of being found out by him.

“Let me ask you; are you the woman that is having an affair with my father of a bastard?”

Joshua leaned in so close that the young woman could see the hatred behind his eyes. She wasn’t sure if it was towards her or his father but it was evident. Seyoung who was forgotten in the conversation, looked at Joshua with wide eyes and mouth open. She couldn’t believe what Joshua accused the young lady. She hit Joshua under the table but he ignored it and was more concern on the matter at his hands.

“Are you?” He raised a brow and the young woman bit her lip and turned her eyes away from his. Joshua knew the answer already and scoffed.

“My dear, let me tell you something.” He leaned in closer if possible till they were a breath apart. “That man has a wife and you will never be my wife or anything to me in my life or my father’s life. So don’t ever think of showing your face to me, every again. Do you understand?”

Seyoung was shocked to see how scary Joshua Hong could be, there was resentment behind his eyes and she wondered what type of relationship his father had with him. Clearly it wasn’t as loving as others. After they had left the café, Joshua offered to drive her home since it was so cold and she didn’t hesitate to take the offer as this winter seemed colder than normal.

“How did you know about that woman and your uhh… father?”

Seyoung wasn’t sure how to bring this topic up but she couldn’t help but wonder about Joshua. There seemed to be more than meeting the eyes with the young man, than a person who cracked jokes and flirted with more than half of the female population at their university.

“My father has many women with him; she’s just one of the few.” Joshua answered and somehow he found it surprising that he was sitting in her apartment once again.

“But you said that he has a wife, your mother right?” She placed a glass of wine on the coffee table and he chuckled.

“Love, you don’t need to intoxicate me to get me to talk to you. Besides I believe I can handle my alcohol better than you.” He sipped on the wine and Seyoung raised an amused brow as she swirled her glass of wine.

“Try me, Mr Play boy.” She lifts up the bottle and he could only chuckle.

After two bottles of wine, both were flushed and tipsy, both were also vulnerable to revealing secrets of themselves. In the end, it was a tie and both were on her couch, slumped against one another and giggling like high school girls.

“So you’re parent are divorced but they still live together?” She asked and he played with her hair that he didn’t know was so soft.

“Yeah, Mum still loves my bastard of a Father but he is like me.”

“What do you mean?” She turned to look at him and he gave her a sad smile.

“Well I should say that I’m like my father, both are too hungry for woman.”

“I don’t think you’re hungry for woman.”

Joshua looked at her with a surprised expression, and then she sat up more and tilted her head with a silly smile. She touched his hair and pats it softly, then ruffled it and laughed.

“You’re not like your father. You don’t date woman that are as young as your son!” She laughed and so as Joshua.

“I don’t even have a son, Seyoungie love.”

“Right! But Joshua Hong you must know something.” She laid her head on his shoulder and he looked at her with an equal silly smile.

“You know that you aren’t that bad.”

“Really? Here is the young woman that was saying I was the worst of all of the playboys and now she’s saying I’m not that bad.” He chuckled and she couldn’t help but go along with him.

“I know! But Joshua Hong, despite what I said before; I think that you’re not that bad a person.”

He raised a brow and sat closer to her, “Is that so?”

He leaned into her touch as his nose touched hers and both could feel each other’s breath against one another mouth.  She wasn’t sure if it was the alcohol or something else but she found herself slowly leaning in and so as Joshua himself. But before their lips could touch she pulled away and Joshua was left hanging.

“Yeah, friends?”

He nodded and she smiled, and laid onto Joshua’s chest as her eyes slowly closed and Joshua flinched as she snuggled a bit closer to him. He didn’t know what to do but his arms moved around her arm and waist and he slowly snuggled closer as well.

Both fell asleep in each other’s arms.

Both fell asleep drunk, as slowly both their feelings for one another changing.
