Taking chances

Playing as Cupid

She didn’t know what overcame her but her feelings just exploded. Maybe it was the alcohol or maybe because she couldn’t supresses her feelings anymore but she couldn’t help but go up and confront her boyfriend.

 This was the last straw.

Seyoung ‘accidentally’ spilled her drink on him and that’s when it started. She let all her frustrations and hidden resentment out. And so it led to a massive fight with swearing and hair pulling and a lot of swearing in general. Other than that she officially broke up with her cheating bastard boyfriend, what she didn’t understand was how the she was in Joshua Hong’s car.

“Firstly, what the hell am I doing in your car?” Seyoung sat in his passenger seat as they were driving to god knows where.

“You are in my car because I am taking you somewhere and we need to talk.” He sang and she frowned.

“Why do we need to talk? I want to go home or where Momo is.”

“Why do you need to talk to Momo?” He asked out of curiosty and she remained quiet but mummered ‘I have to.’

“Talk to me, I’ll listen to your problems.” He suggested.

“Look, I’m not in the mood to play your games okay? So stop trying to pretending to be interested in me and concern for me. I know that your goal is to play around with me but right now I am honestly not up to play your games.” She snapped at him and he was taken back. He had never seen her show such raw emotions before, on a regular basis she would deal and play around with him, amusing him but, now he could see a hurt young girl behind the one that would sneakily remark on his flirting skills.

“I’m not pretending to be concern about you, I am generally worried about you.” He kept his eyes on the road but he could see her look at him with eyes trying to seek his motive.

“Tell me, why did you pull me out of that club?”

“I didn’t want you to do anything that you would regret.”

She scoffed and cross her arms, “The only thing I regret is letting that bastard into my heart.”

“Why?”

She was silent for some time and Joshua wondered if she had fallen asleep but her eyes were trained on the outside world as she appeared to be more interested outside the window. When he stopped at a red light he heard her softly hiccupping as his eyes moved towards the young lady near him, he noticed that her eyes were slightly swollen and red and her mascara had smudged. Before he could even stop himself, his hand automatically landed on her cheek as he wiped the destroyed make up away from her porcelain skin and somehow his hand landed softly on her head. Her eyes widen due to his actions and, he pulled his hand away when the light turned green.

“Don’t cry over that coward.”

“This is why I should never love someone.” She muttered softly and he couldn’t help but over hear her.

“What do you mean?”

“I’m like my mother, I never have good luck with men. I will always get hurt no matter what I do.” She said almost pitying herself wrapped with mockery.

“You haven’t met a real man yet, love.”

“What makes you say that?” She turned to him amused and he couldn’t help but chuckle.

“Lee Seyoung, let me love you like a real man.”

He stared into her eyes and she was taken back one again, his eyes showed how serious he was but she couldn’t help but still think that he was hiding something. She broke her eyes away from his gaze and looked out the window with an amused smile.

“Didn’t I tell you? I shouldn’t love anyone.”

Joshua pulled into her apartment building as he parked his car, he turned off the engine and took off his seat belt. Seyoung naturally took hers off as well but before she could open the door, he trapped her and leaned in till they could feel each other’s breath.

“Let’s make a deal. I will show you how a man loves a woman and in return all you need to do is feel my love.” He leaned in and she couldn’t help but laugh. He was surprised how soft and ligh her laughter was.

“Are you saying that you don’t want me to love you back but you’re willing to shower me with love?”

“Exactly, it’s a win for you, love. I win nothing in return.” He gave her his cheeky smile and she raised a brow.

“There is always something for you to win in return. After all, you are one of the notorious playboys.” She leaned in so close that Joshua almost swore he could have just lean in and kiss her but she pulled away from him before he could grab her neck and plant kisses on her lips.

“But if I were to play your game Mr playboy. Like everything for you, this is all fun and games for you.” she pushed him softly away as she got out of his car but leaned down to whisper into his ear.

“Making young woman fall for you so you can break their hearts.”

He couldn’t help but smile more, she knew what he was going to do to her yet she was willing to play with him.

She was dancing with the devil disguised as an angel.

“But Joshua Hong, you ought to try harder because I’m not like all your other girls. However I think you already know that.” She smirked and walked back up to her apartment.

When he watched her walk back up to her apartment he couldn’t hold back his smile as he rubbed his hands together, she was playing into his hands and it won’t be long till she is dancing on the palm of his hand.

***

When Seyoung walked into her apartment she closed the door softly and hit her back against it, slowly sliding down along with the tears falling on her cheeks. It had been a long time since she last cried like this and she suddenly missed home. The last time she went home was on chuseok not too long ago. Suddenly she felt her phone ring and she fiddled with her clutch to get it and like her mother had read her mind, she didn’t even hesitate to answer it.

“Mum…” She quietly whimpered like a child.

“What’s wrong honey??” Her mother responded with a concern tone. She really missed her. Sometimes she wished that they didn’t live so far but it was better than her family living in another country.

“I hate men.”

“Ayee don’t say things like that. What happened? Did he break up with you?”

“No, the bastard cheated on me and I broke up with him Mum.” She rolled her eyes but smiled at her mother’s bubbly attitude as it affected her in a good way.

“Don’t worry honey! You just haven’t found the right person yet. Love isn’t an easy thing, it comes when we least expect it.”

“Yeah, well its probably God telling me not to get married.” She played with the strap of her bag.

“Yah!- Don’t say such a thing. Just because it didn’t work out with him, then maybe you guys weren’t meant to be.” Her mother reasoned.

“But Mum… I’m like you… we both can’t find a good man to stay in our life.”

“YAH! I did find a good man actually it’s just you.”

“But he left you and with two babies.” She rolled her eyes and there was a small silence and she knew she should have kept shut.

“I never thought of you or your brother as a nuisance in my life, Seyoung. You’re a blessing and your father isn’t a bad man.” Her mother always defended the man that she only remembered leaving the house and forgetting about her mother, brother and her.

“I don’t know Mum… I’m thinking of giving up on men.”

She heard her mother chuckle and she raised a brow in curiosity. When she asked why the elder was laughing the other only responded with a compliment. “Honey, you’re one beautiful girl. It would be hard for any man to ignore you.”

This made Seyoung smile and laugh, her mother always kept telling her this but slowly she began to lose hope in her words. Almost every guy she had dated only seemed to love her for her body and looks not for who she was, and slowly each time she fell in love and fall out she slowly closed her heart. It was probably the reason why she didn’t seem that hurt after she confronted her boyfriend before, it was something she was used to.

“Seyoung, I’m sure there is one person in the world that will love you properly and show you how love should be.”

When her mother’s words reached her, it reminded her of a certain person with a charming smile that seemed to have taken interest in her life.

“Mum… I met this person that told me that he liked me and promised to shower me with love but-“

“But what? Seyoungie if anything in life it’s better to have someone that loves you and cherish you rather than being on the other end but that does not mean that you don’t return the love that person gives you.”

“Mum… I know he’s only joking. He doesn’t actually have any feelings for me.”

“Who told you that!? You should never doubt a man’s true feelings nor his love!” Her mother gasped and Seyoung rolled her eyes.

“Mum… He’s one of the playboys in our school. There is definitely no way he had any interest in me whatsoever.”

“Hmmm who knows, maybe you can change him?”

“Seriously Mum! Don’t act like those stupid girls that believe that they can change a man that will always be a player.”

“Sometimes it’s possible Seyoungie. Don’t underestimate kdramas and books.”

If Seyoung could see her mother she would give her the typical Asian stare, it was completely obvious that he was playing her. She didn’t even need glasses to see this.

“I’m only half joking, Seyoung. But if he’s willing to offer to shower you with love then why not take the chance? Besides if you don’t have feelings for him or if he doesn’t have feelings for you then maybe both of you can develop feelings for one another?”

“Mum, honestly what you said made no sense at all.”

“Oh hush you little- anyway I was wondering if you’re coming down for Christmas or staying up with friends?”

“I don’t know yet, Momo is likely to be back in Japan to celebrate with her family and I think Jihoon is going back down.”

“Oh dear, I haven’t seen that boy in ages! Has he grown much since the last time?” Her mother asked as she always claimed that the young man would grow more but Seyoung wasn’t so sure to answer that question.

“Anyway dear, I have to go now, but do think about what I said hmm? Just remember that anything can happen. Don’t be afraid to take chances because in the end of the day, if something happens then it must have meant to be and, if nothing happens then so be it.”

“I guess…”

After saying her good byes and washing up to go to sleep, Seyoung thought to herself about her mother words. Maybe she was playing it to safe, maybe she needed to take a risk for a change. It seemed whenever she played on the safe side she was always hurt, so if she was going to be hurt again why not take a risk? She raised her head high and a smiled appeared on her lips that was reflected in the mirror.

Maybe it was time to make a change.

Maybe it was time to take a chance.

Maybe she should take a chance with Joshua Hong.

Just maybe…
