Newborn birds always try to fly once they are old enough. Many a time the little thing will take its first step into the air and flap its wings uselessly. Sometimes, it will fall to the ground, and the mother bird will come hurriedly to it's rescue, chirping anxiously and loudly. But there will be a day, when the little bird will be able to shoot out into the sky, free and happy, and the mother bird will look at her child go, glad but sad all at once.

Right now, I was the mother bird, and Toki my child.

I watched, heart aching, as she conversed with the passenger relations operator and loaded her baggage onto the trolley belt. She struggled a little with the weight, but being the tough nut that she had always been, she got it on just alright. Her parents stood with me, her mother sniffling a little.

Toki had wanted to go away alone, so her parents had arranged for her to go to Hokkaido where she had an aunt there. None of us had set a fixed date for her return, but she had made it clear that she would be away for a long time. Not a single one of us had been able to stop her from going. She was going, she needed a break, that was that.

I shuffled behind quietly as she walked towards the departure hall with her parents, passport in hand. At the gates, her mother's tears were evident, but she still kept a strong front and hugged Toki cheerfully. Her father gave her a firm, one arm hug, telling her to take care of herself.

Finally, she turned to me.

For a long time, neither of us spoke and just stared into each other's eyes. After the incident, something had entered Toki's eyes. A dark shadow, something I could never truly put my finger on. Even when she smiled, the dark shadow never disappeared. I walked to her, drawing her to me. She sank right into my embrace, arms curling around my waist. I hugged her, so, so tight, afraid to let her go, reluctant to see her off.

The mother bird doesn't want her child to leave her side.

But the child had to.

I kissed her forehead, and then finally let go of her. I wanted to hug her once more, to breathe in her scent, to hear her soft laugh, see her smile without any foreign shadows in her beautiful eyes. But I could only watch as she assured her parents she'd be fine, and then slowly walked towards the gates to her escape, away from here, away from me.

It's not true that I didn't think of running forward and begging her not to leave, but I knew that this was the safe haven she needed. Asking her to stay would only make her more miserable, and I could never find it in my heart to make her so. I hoped that, by leaving and breathing in fresh Hokkaido air, the shadows in her eyes would disappear and I'd perhaps have the chance to one day see her bright, pure smile again.

A mother bird is also glad her child has found its flight.

The digital clock hanging over the gates showed 11:11, and at that moment she turned, one foot in the departure hall, and waved to us, half smiling. I waved back to her, heart tearing, mouth smiling, and watched, desolate, as she got her passport stamped and finally walked out of our sight.

The mother bird bids her baby goodbye with a bittersweet heart.

& about the the competition, I can't submit my fanfic works because they are too short ;;_;; I have to wirte 40 ,000 words and my inspiration is like b l a n k.

Oh well.
