She did not expect the kiss to happen. Jangmi’s still trying to wrap her mind around what happened 2 days ago. It has been excruciatingly awkward sitting besde Kai during classes. He looked so normal that it was bugging her if he really meant that kiss. They haven’t talked since then because everytime they were left alone, Jangmi would make an excuse to leave first. Kai’s busy with his dance practice because of the coming meet.

“Is there something wrong?”

Jangmi turned to look at Chanyeol who was staring at her. She shook her head immediately before forcing a smile.

“Nothing’s wrong.”

Chanyeol tilted his head with a questioning expression.

“You’ve been spacing out a lot these days,” he commented.

Well, she couldn’t help it. She’s still processing everything and re-evaluating her heart conditions about Kai because if she’s not going to do it, she might go crazy with everything going on.

It’s almost the end of the school year. The finals are coming soon and so is graduation. College entrance examinations are coming too. Even when her mother loosened everything that has something to do with her studies, Jangmi still thinks that she needs to prepare herself for them since she personally want to go to a good school too.

“The MT’s four days away. I cannot wait anymore,” Chanyeol suddenly blurted out. He leaned on his back while looking at the ceiling.

Right, it will be her last high school MT and it looks like it’s not going to be that comfortable with Kai around. She really needs to sort out her feelings.

“Vice Pres.”

“Hmm?”

“Do you think you’ll miss this school after graduating?”

Jangmi blinked at his question for some time before closing her notes. “Let’s see,” she started before biting her lip. A small smile came to her face and nodded. “Yes, I’ll miss it a lot,” she continued and looked at Chanyeol.

He was smiling to himself.

“I still don’t know what to do with my life after this. Maybe I’ll enlist myself and go to the army first before going to college,” he commented.

“You said you wanted to take music. Are you not going to?”

He kept quiet before sighing.

“What will music give me? Will it give me money? I really need money for my parents.”

Jangmi just stared at Chanyeol. She knew more than his bright personality. She knows how much he likes doing music.

“But I hope that you’ll not stop making music. You have a great talent and it’ll be a waste if you just give it up,” Jangmi stated. Chanyeol smiled to himself and stood.

“You can count me on that,” he said with a bright smile on his face.

Screaming from people, mostly girls, filled the place when the MC stood in front of the crowd. Jangmi moved a little to avoid herself being pushed by other audience who were pushing their ways towards the front. It was the most awaited dance meet and Hyemi tried her best to drag her there.

The MC started talking but she couldn’t hear what he was talking about because of all the noise. Jangmi felt like her ears would explode. Hyemi held her by the hand and started squealing like a fangirl.

“They’re going to start soon,” she said with so much excitement.

“Calm down. You look so hyped,” Jangmi stated and Hyemi turned to her.

“Are you not hyped? You’re going to see Kai dance for the first time. And I’m going to see my boyfriend dance his way to the finals,” Hyemi replied.

Jangmi kept quiet. There’s a small voice in the corner of her mind that’s telling her that she really wanted to see Kai dance. She knew what he went through to stand again in a stage. It was not an easy process for him. And that’s the reason why Jangmi feels like she’s proud of him.

The picture of him kissing her hit her like lightning and she quickly shook her head.

“Is there something wrong?”

Jangmi smiled at her friend. “Nothing; it’s just that it’s so loud in here.”

Hyemi pulled her closer to her and looked at the stage. “That’s just the beginning, wait until Kai shows up on that stage,” Hyemi continued.

True to what Hyemi said, the cheerings went wild crazy when Kai’s group entered the stage. Hyemi started jumping up and down while screaming. When she looked back at the stage, her eyes stopped on Kai’s. He was staring at her. Jangmi felt her heart stopped beating. And before the lights went off, she saw him smiling at her.

When the music started, Jangmi was thrown to whole new world of music and dance. She’s not an expert when it comes to such things but she knows how to appreciate a work of art when she sees one. Kai, dancing to the rhythm, is a work of art – a beautiful and magnificent one.

She found herself smiling to herself. Throughout their performance, her eyes were on him.

3 minutes was not enough for her to take in the gracefulness of his moves. The crowd was still cheering even after the performance.

“You’re already caught,” Hyemi suddenly stated and Jangmi looked at her in surprise. Hyemi was grinning teasefully.

“What?”

“That smile on your face clearly states that you’re already falling for him or already fell for him,” Hyemi replied.

Jangmi’s face reddened.

“I’m happy for you, Jangmi. I bet you’re going to make a perfect couple,” Hyemi continued before giggling.

Jangmi’s ears were ringing.

Hyemi’s right, she’s already falling for him.

After the dance meet, Jangmi was not able to talk to Kai. Fangirls swarmed the members as soon as they were announced as the winners. Despite her resolve that she needed to talk to him to clear things up, she pushed it for another day…and then another day.

Kai was barely hanging out with her these past days because of some interviews from different stations about his dancing and about basketball. Jangmi could feel the gap between them. She could now feel that Kai’s not an ordinary person. He’s a person who’s known by many people. When she sees him on TV commercials, she always feels something weird.

She’s used to seeing him as Jongin and not as Kai. There’s a great distinction about his personas. Jongin’s the childish, stubborn, affectionate, cheesy and playful side of him. Kai’s the charismatic one who the people watching the TV see.

She looked back at the book that she’s reading but looked at the TV once again when she heard Kai laughing about some question that a fan asked. His laughter is really lively that she couldn’t help but get caught by it like a black hole.

“Brother-in-law’s really popular. Even my classmates like him. Noona, what are you going to do?” Jeno suddenly asked.

Jangmi turned her head to her brother who was also staring at the TV.

“What do you mean?” she asked nonchalantly.

“His fans will not like it if they found out that you’re dating-” he stopped. “Ah, right, you’re not dating. Pity, I like him though,” he continued and shrugged.

Jangmi sighed and closed the book that she’s reading. Sometimes talking to Jeno’s stressful.

Her phone started ringing. She stared at the screen of her phone – Jack.

“Are you not going to answer that?” Jeno asked. She quickly grabbed it and walked to her room. She answered it after some time.

“Hello?”

“Rose?”

“Yes.”

“Am I disturbing you?” Kai asked. Jangmi shook her head. “No. Why are you calling at such an hour?”

“I was just checking on you,” he replied casually. She couldn’t help but her feel her face burning.

“I see.”

“How have you been? I rarely talked to you these days.”

Jangmi bit her lip as she sat on her chair. “I’ve been fine. I’ve been studying for the finals.”

“That’s so you, Rose,” he commented before chuckling.

“Jongin,” she muttered. She usually calls him Kai but calling him by his real name felt much better – much connected.

“Why?”

“This must be late but I want to congratulate you for winning in the dance meet,” she replied. She could hear him laughing from the other line. “Thanks Rose. That means a lot to me. I wanted to talk to you after that but I was not able to. So how was my dancing?” he asked.

Jangmi paused for a minute before rubbing the back of her neck. She suddenly felt shy. “You were actually impressive, you all were.”

“That’s good then. I can’t wait for the MT tomorrow,” he stated.

“You’re coming?” she asked in shock.

“Of course I am. It’s going to be my last MT in high school and I bet it’s going to be fun because you’ll be there.”

There it is again – his cheese lines. The only thing that’s different now is that it’s affecting Jangmi.

“You’re really impossible to deal with,” she said with a sigh.

“I know and that’s my charm,” he replied and chuckled. Jangmi smiled to herself as she looked down at her hand. If someone would see her now, they would think that she’s going nuts.

“Standby everyone!”

Jangmi’s eyes narrowed when she heard that. It looks like Kai’s still on one of his stuff.

“Rose, I need to go. See you tomorrow,” Kai said immediately and before he could hang up, Jangmi called for him.

“Jongin?”

“Hmm?”

“Take care,” she mumbled as if she did not like those words to come out from .

“You too. And Rose, I like it when you call me by my real name. Good night.”

The line died and so did her heart.

She plopped on her bed and covered her face with her pillow.

“What the hell did I just say??”

Kai was not there.

All the students were ready to depart but Kai’s still not there. Deep down, Jangmi could feel how disappointed she is. She actually had a hard time sleeping last night because she’s nervous and excited to talk with Kai about everything that’s going on with them. Her face just says everything about her feelings at the moment.

Teacher Choi was in front of the crowd and was checking

I still remember the first time I discovered Turning Pages. It was 3 years ago, back in the year 2016, when I was only 19. I was still new here then and had a hard time to go through stories to read, and somehow, I found Turning Pages. I still remember I stayed up the whole day and night when I started reading it and just couldn't wait to know what was going next. It was exciting, warming and funny as well as how I feel like being Jang Mi as if we were one. Since then, every year, I promised myself to come back here at least once and read it again, as if I've never seen it before. It's amazing that every time I read T.P, I always feel like it's my first doing so. Every single event that takes place excites me, every single moment between Jongin and Jangmi makes me die inside (not literally, of course) with their humour and loving scenes. Now, for the fourth year since we met, shall we start all over again?

Chapter 23: Chapter 23: Awhhh this is such a good read! I love how you portrayed Kai's character as a hopeless romantic. Makes me feel soooo much, it reminds me of the lack of my own love life. Thank you for writing this! Til next time, x.
