Chapter 8

The Ring Bearer

Right before I passed them, Sehun lunged forward and grabbed my wrist, pulling me back with furrowed eyebrows, "How did you know his name?"

"His... name?" I was honestly confused, because neither of them told me his name and I hadn't realized I said anything like a person's name.

"Yeah, you just said 'Kai is here somewhere'. How did you know his name?" Sehun's eyes were piercing as he stared at me, as if he wanted to know if I was hiding something; as if he thought I was hiding something.

Tao looked between us in wonder before his own eyes widened, "Now that I think about it, you called Sehun by his name before you found the ring."

"I did?!" I exclaimed, pulling my hand out of Sehun's grasp to stare at the two boys in frustration, "What are you talking about? I don't even know the mages' names!"

Neither of them looked convinced as they stared at me, but they slowly let out sighs and shook their heads before turning their backs to me. Then, Tao all but ran upstairs, and Sehun bolted through the main floor, which we were waiting in. Seeing as the two of them already took their claims, I had no choice but to try and find a basement of some sort.

Thinking of what I'd seen in my dream, I realized that that kind of room would only bring negative attention to the person who had the room, so keeping it above ground would only cause suspicions. I looked around the living room for any sort of clue, only pausing in worry as I heard several pots and pans clatter onto the floor. I would have gone to check on Sehun, but I was distracted by footsteps upstairs; loud footsteps.

Hopefully, we really were the only ones in the house, or the three of us would have woken someone that could possibly cause harm to any of us. The other two had powers, so I wasn't worried if they were to get into trouble. On the other hand, I didn't have any powers and wasn't last ranked in town for nothing. My eyes searched around the living room, looking for possible threats and possible openings for an underground, yet I could see or sense nothing.

If we were to be attacked suddenly, I wouldn't even be of any help to Tao or Sehun; I would just drag them down with me. I felt tears spring into my eyes as I thought of it, because before this, I had no one to protect and no one worth living for. Now, I had two mages who were counting on me to help them find and free what seemed to be another ten mages; nine if you excluded the one in the house we were in already.

However, it wasn't right of me to cry about it, if I didn't try my best to get better so that I could protect these mages. I would do anything to help my friends, and I'd start by finding the one they called Kai. I was about to leave the living room when I jabbed my foot against something and ended up sprawled out on the wooden floor, looking around to see what I'd fallen over.

There was an oddly placed rug where I had once been, and a corner of it had been overturned when I fell over. My first thought was to forget about it and move on, but a sudden thought filled me. There wouldn't be a randomly placed rug laying around unless it was hiding something.

So, I pushed the rug aside and felt a grin form on my lips when I saw what seemed to be a trapdoor, a small latch on one side of it. I pulled on the latch and the trapdoor lifted so I could figure out what was inside of the space. It was dim, but there was enough light for me to see an old staircase leading down into the basement of the house, and as I glanced at the trapdoor, I realized it was just big enough for one person to go down it at once.

"Tao!" I called at the top of my voice, hoping the male could hear me, "Sehun!"

After calling the both of them, I wasted no time and all but ran down the stairs so I could see exactly what was in the basement; hopefully, it was the space from my dream.

I stood in a corner of the room and took in deep breaths as I tried to calm myself down and force the horror away. It was a lot more terrifying to see the room in person than it was when it was my dream. I took a look at the desks turned over, and the bookshelves, and I gasped as I saw the box sitting on top of the dissection table, covered in scratch marks and dust. I saw the surgical instruments, thrown about the table as if someone had angrily thrown them off the table, and the area surrounding the table, bookshelves and all, were in terrible condition.

In my dream, the box wasn't on the table but stuck within the pile of wood, so I thought I was lucky that the box was in plain sight, yet when I took a step forward, the box disappeared. I was afraid that I'd never find the box, or at least, any time soon. With tears now filling my eyes, and panic welling in my heart, I pulled papers on the ground and threw them away when I realized they weren't covering the box.

Finally, I heard Tao and Sehun's footsteps coming down the staircase, and I turned to them and wiped my eyes as they stared around the perimeter in the exact horror I expected my face to mirror. Just seeing my horror was enough to set them into motion, and I continued searching through the papers despite the fact that bookshelves and the dissection table were being tossed around as if they weighed less than a leaf.

We searched through all the papers, in and under every bookshelf, but the box was nowhere to be found and neither of us knew where else to look. Then, my head snapped to the pile of wood in the corner and I hoped it would finally go the way my dream had gone so I could finally awaken the new mage from his long slumber. I ran to the pile and threw the wood planks behind me, and I swear I heard Sehun hiss before my focus was back on the pile in front of me. It seemed like forever, and the tears were now freely streaming down my face, when I felt my fingers brush against exactly what I was looking for.

There it was in all of it's glory, the third "EXO" black velvet box. It was now also covered in sawdust thanks to the pile of wood thrown mercilessly ontop of it, and I ached desperately to pick it up again.

"You found him." Tao breathed, and I could just hear the excitement brewing in his voice.

"Hurry, wake him up!" Sehun shouted, and I threw a glance over my shoulder to see Sehun was practically bouncing in place.

My tears had dried at seeing their excitement, and I nodded, leaning down to pick the delicate box into my hands. It disappeared again, and I heaved a sigh as my head whipped around to figure out where it had gone.

"On the bookshelf!" I saw Tao point his finger and then my eyes narrowed on the bookshelf that I'd seen in my dream, and the box resting on top of it innocently.

I knew what would happen next, yet I stood up and leaned toward the bookshelf the box was resting on, and it disappeared.

"It's on the desk now." Sehun breathed, and though my patience was starting to thin, I still felt panic in my heart. What if the box really didn't want me to hold it? Yet, I was pulled out of my thoughts by Sehun, who started creeping towards it, "Tao."

Tao didn't need an explanation or any other words, but the taller male nodded and circled around to the other side of the box, making sure that they would be able to jump on it before it could escape again.

I wanted to tell Sehun that in my dream, a breeze had come in and kept the box in place, but I remembered how Tao once told me that their powers wouldn't work against each others, and the new mage's powers were definitely working well on its own. The panic in my heart started welling again, and I wished with all of my heart for a way to keep the box from disappearing.

Which was when the breeze arrived as it did in my dream, surrounding us and making Tao, Sehun and I tense until we realized what it was doing. It had contracted and the breeze instead circled the box, lifting it off of the desk and suspending it in air.

"Sehun, what are you doing?" Tao asked, his eyes widening as he turned to the other mage.

Sehun shook his head rapidly and looked down at his hands, "I'm not doing it, I can't use my powers against him when he's constantly using his."

I picked up the fear they were using to speak, yet my eyes were focused on that velvet box. Now that it wasn't disappearing, it gave me the perfect opportunity to reach out and finally grasp it in my hands. I finally stomped down the panic and the urge to run away and stood before the box with my hands outstretched to catch it. The wind calmed down to a stop and the box gracefully fell into my hands. I blew off the dust and could feel a sad smile forming when I realized the box would most likely be damaged like this for a long time, yet it was the ring I was mostly worried for.

I opened the box, slowly, and grinned when I noticed the familiar silver ring with gems and a triangle shaped gem in the center with little marks on the center gem. With another glance thrown at the two mages, I noticed their anticipated gazes were focused on the ring, and that was enough to give me the courage to put the ring on.

Putting the black velvet box down on the overturned desk, I picked the ring up into my hands and frowned at the large size. I don't know who wore these rings before, but they apparently had huge fingers. As if the ring knew what I was thinking, it shrunk to a size that could fit only on my third finger, and I placed it on my left hand's third finger before shutting my eyes and covering them with my right hand.

"Kai!" I realized when the glow had died down because of the mages next to me, and when I opened my eyes to look at the new mage, I noticed he'd been pounced on by the other two, who had him in a tight hug that he returned.

"Sehun? Tao?" The mage was darker in skin tone and had dark eyes and hair to match, yet he looked as if he was thinner than either of them, and confused as to why he was seeing them in front of him, "Why am I awake? Why are you here?"

That made Tao and Sehun both let go of him and they stepped back to allow the mage to see me, and I felt my cheeks redden slightly at the sudden attention. The third mage was also handsome, I'll give him that.

As his eyes shot to me, the third mage dropped to one knee and had his head bowed in submission.

"Who are you?" I asked him. Despite knowing his name to be Kai from apparently myself and the other two mages, I wanted him to tell me his name himself.

The male lifted his head and gave me a smirk that I knew would make every girl swoon, "I'm Kai, master."

He said the word with sarcasm and venom dripped out of his tone, yet I wasn't frightened of him. I walked closer to him and he flinched as his smirk slowly disappeared. I saw Tao and Sehun also freeze as I made my way towards Kai, as if they were afraid I'd punish him for speaking to me like that.

Instead, I dropped to my knees before him and slowly reached out to cup his face in my hands. Kai tensed even more, if that were possible, and I was afraid that Tao and Sehun probably did as well, but I was too busy making sure there was no physical damage to be seen on the new mage.

"You're alright." I breathed in relief and slowly pulled my hands back to wipe at my eyes. I hadn't realized I'd teared up again, but now, all of my previous feelings toward Kai had faded and turned into absolute relief that he wasn't harmed.

I felt my hands being tugged away from my face with gentle hands, and I looked up at Kai to see his former smirk had turned into a gentle smile as he used his own hand to brush my tears away. I felt Sehun on my left and turned to see he'd also knelt down on the ground and put an arm around my waist to comfort me, and when I felt another arm on my waist, I turned to see Tao had done the same on my right side.

"My name's Yun Seung, by the way." I told him, and in response, Kai moved his hand from my face to my hair, ruffling it gently.

"I'm glad you're the one I woke up to." He muttered, and the two arms around my waist squeezed me as if to say they felt the same, and I felt the smile on my face return.

These three boys were my friends, and I'd protect them no matter what it took.
