Chapter 63

The Ring Bearer

When the wind shifts, Sehun realizes something is wrong. He's been learning to keep track of the wind since Chanyeol disappeared, in case someone else were to do the same thing. And well, the someone who decided to leave was Jongdae this time. Sehun could smell the scent of lightning growing dimmer, and if that was growing dimmer, who knew what had happened to Jongdae?

So, he stomps his way over to where the rest of the mages are training. Jongin is ahead of the group and while most of the mages are sparring, Yifan is hovering in the back because he's still not on the same level as some of them and why would he push himself if they could handle things without him?

No one seemed to have noticed Jongdae was missing, and it causes a frown to form on his lips because as troublesome as Jongdae was, he was still their brother. Even if he had asked to be cursed, he was still one of them and he wouldn't abandon anyone else.

"Where's Jongdae?" He asks the group, and the mages just glance at one another like they thought he was right there with them.

Luhan, who was actually supposed to be training with Jongdae today lifted his head to look at Sehun and his expression was curious, "Why are you looking for him, Hun?"

"Why aren't the rest of you looking for him?" Sehun retorts, and he waves his arms around because he can control the bits of powers that his wind picks up from the others. The strand of lightning that hits the ground isn't nearly as powerful as it would have been if Jongdae were around.

"He's... gone?" Baekhyun asks slowly, because after losing Chanyeol he's not ready to lose someone else he's close to.

"When did you notice?" Joonmyun calls, and Sehun shakes his head because he just thought he was imagining things, but this makes things thousands of times worse.

Chanyeol, who had been silently warming up in the back stepped forward and then he had trembling hands around Sehun's collars, "Don't tell me he went after them like I did."

"Chanyeol!" Minseok shouts, and he presses his cold fingers against Chanyeol's neck to cool him down, yet the tall male isn't throwing fire. He just holds onto Sehun and shakes like he's thinking of worst case scenarios.

"Yun Seung." Zitao speaks up, and everyone glances in the direction that he's looking in to see Yun Seung heading in their direction with Jinki following her.

"She knows something." Kyungsoo says with grit teeth, because she always seems to know when something wrong is happening.

They wait until she's before them to ask because they don't want to scare her away if she really doesn't know anything, but she simply stops before them with her lips pressed together and there's hesitation in her aura as she glances to Jinki and back to them.

"You know where he went." Yifan tells her, because it's obvious by her expression and Yifan's not the kind to beat around the bush despite how difficult this is for everyone.

"To find Yuna." Yun Seung says, more like mutters, and the mages' eyes widen in disbelief because why would Jongdae be the one who goes after Yuna?

Sehun freezes upon hearing it because Jongdae?! Jongdae might have destructive powers but he's not nearly as physically strong as Chanyeol is. If the sorceresses were to capture him... who knows what they could make him do.

"Why did you let him go?!" Zitao cries out, and Yun Seung looks over to him with tears shining in his eyes.

"He said it was the only way to save Yifan." Yun Seung explains, and Yifan doesn't miss a beat.

Seconds later, he has his hands on Yun Seung's shoulder and his voice takes on a dangerous edge, "Where did he go?"

"It's too far for any of you to catch up to him now, even if you teleport." Jinki tells them, and he reaches forward to pull Yun Seung away from Yifan's grip.

Livid, Joonmyun walks forward until he's chest to chest with the warrior and his teeth are grit as he speaks, "Are you telling us not to bother looking for our brother?"

"The warlocks went with him." Yun Seung says after a moment of hesitation, and though it was a relief to know that Jongdae wasn't alone, why hadn't Jongdae told them of his plan?

"Why exactly is he looking for Yuna's help?" Sehun asks with his eyebrows furrowed. They might have had ties with Yuna in the past, but she was the reason that the twelve of them had been trapped.

"The most powerful spell book in all of creation happens to be the spell book that held the key to freeing you." Jinki answers with a shrug,

"Or at least, that's what my boys have been telling me."

"It won't work," Yifan says, dragging a hand down his face. The other mages turn to him in confusion and there are a few heartbroken gazes because at least let them hope there's a chance to have their team back like they've been hoping all this time.

"There is no magic strong enough on this planet to return my life to me."

"The spellbook in my family's possession has magic from all over the universe." Yun Seung tries, and Yifan visibly pales further than he already was.

He doesn't say a thing, just turns and stumbles away like what he just heard should have been impossible. Sehun thinks that maybe Yifan's right and that it shouldn't be possible. For a family of sorceresses to have a book that powerful? Just what exactly were they dealing with?

"Fan?" Zitao calls to the tall mage's fading back, but Yifan continues on like he's unheard and a worried Zitao runs after him.

"How... how can such a book exist?" Luhan asks, his gaze shifting from Minseok to Joonmyun and then over to Yun Seung like one of them knew the answer.

"Forget that! How can we trust Yuna after what happened to us?!" Jongin shouts, and Sehun feels his fists clench at his sides because he has a point.

"Because it's Yuna." Yixing sighs as he answers, and the remaining mages fall silent as they hear it because no matter how strange the whole situation was, surely Yuna had reasons; surely, Yuna hadn't meant to betray them.

"Does that mean we should sit here and do nothing?" Chanyeol asks the group, and Sehun's eyes shift over to him because they both feel the same way. No one's ready to lose another brother, even if it is Jongdae.

The silence that answers tells him that yes, they should just sit and do nothing because is there anything else for them to do when they don't even really know what's going on? Sehun hates their silence, hates that they readily accept it because there's no other choice. He doesn't want to lose anyone again, and he closes his eyes because at times like these, only the wind can calm him down.

He takes in a couple of deep breaths, allowing the scent of wind to fill him and the gentle heat of the breeze fly around him and calm him, and there's that distinct feeling of everyone's powers as they stand together. He can smell the fire that radiates from Chanyeol and the light that slips out in strands from Baekhyun, and that faint scent of lightning in the air.

And then he gasps because he can actually trace Jongdae through the scent of his powers. He never thought it was possible, but here he is, following the strands of lightning in the sky as they get closer and closer and then, there he is. Jongdae isn't alone; just like Jinki said. He can feel Yongguk's presence, the scent of his powers, and it appears Yongguk can feel him as well because moments later, something's interfering and he feels like he's slipping and losing that connection.

"Hun? Sehun?" Luhan calls in worry, and he reaches out to grab onto the youngest mage's shoulder, but Sehun barely hears him.

He opens his eyes for just a moment, glancing at the others who sport worried expressions as they stare at him. He has no time to explain, he barely has any time to begin with. He reaches out and grabs onto Jongin's hand so he can use his powers to give Jongin an idea of where to find Jongdae.

"Sehun!" Jongin breathes in surprise, and when Sehun opens his eyes because he's finally found Jongdae, there's a wide grin on Jongin's lips.

"What happened? What are we missing?" Kyungsoo asks in confusion, glancing between the two young mages.

"I'll bring him back, I promise." Jongin tells them, and they watch him disappear before their eyes narrow onto Sehun.

So he explains what he just saw, and explains that Jongin's the best person to go because he can pull out in a moment if the situation goes sour.

"One of your mages just lost his powerss. Why not see if Jongdae can get them back?" Jinki asks, and the mages stare at him with hardened eyes.

"Because what's the use of going to look for Yifan's powers if we lose Jongdae in the process?" Minseok mutters, and Yun Seung drops her head.

"He doesn't have much time left." Yun Seung tells them, and Sehun's eyes dart over to her because what is she saying?

"I get glimpses here and there because he shared part of himself with me. Sealing his powers away did nothing but slow it down, but... Yifan... Yifan's dying."

No one says a thing, because they already knew it without being told. It was obvious since Yifan was growing weaker, but hearing it from Yun Seung's mouth hits a chord. Joonmyun and Minseok just walk away, because they need to make plans for if Jongin doesn't succeed in bringing Jongdae back and Luhan runs after them because it sure beats the awkward tension. Kyungsoo is reluctant but reaches over to rub Chanyeol's back because the mage of fire is trembling at the thought of losing his best friend and both Kyungsoo and Baekhyun are needed to drag the tall mage away.

"That spellbook, they didn't take it with them, did they?" Yixing asks with a bit of curiosity in his tone.

"No, it's in the bunker." Jinki replies, and after Yixing asks to go and study it, the pair of them are also gone and leave Sehun with Yun Seung.

"Do you hate me, for letting him go without you?" Yun Seung's voice is almost quiet as she asks and Sehun feels a sad smile growing on his face because how could any of them ever hate Yun Seung?

"I understand why you did it, Yun Seung." Sehun answers, and he takes a seat right where he had been standing,

"It's just that we keep losing one another and it's starting to really mess with our heads."

Yun Seung's reaction is immediate. She's crouched in front of him and her hands are cupping his face so they can look into one another's eyes and her lips are set into a grimace, "Don't say that, Sehun. You might have lost people before, but have you noticed that the twelve of you are always being brought back to one another? I don't think you could ever truly be pulled away from each other."

Sehun can't help but laugh because he really needed to hear that right now. She seems to understand because there's a soft smile growing on her own face and she sits beside him so the two of them could watch the twinkling stars shine in the sky.

"Thanks, Yun Seung. For bringing us together again." He says quietly, and a moment later, he reaches out for her hand and squeezes it. She doesn't even pull away, just squeezes his hand in return and rests her head on his shoulder.

"You're not together yet, Sehun. Wait until Jongdae comes back."

Sehun nods, because through the wind, he can feel that Jongdae's going to be alright.
