Chapter 64

The Ring Bearer

Jongdae's got a stupid look in his eyes, as Jongin would call it. To Jongdae, it's just himself being serious, but it creeps the hell out of Jongin. He appears before Jongdae and the BAP warlocks on their way to where Yuna has told them to meet her, and he wants to grab Jongdae by the neck and forcefully transport them back to the others, but he sees that look in the mage of lightning's eyes and something in his stomach churns. Jongdae doesn't notice him at first, he's too busy staring at the direction they're going towards with a map clenched tightly between his fingers, but when Jongin takes a step closer, Jongdae jabs out a hand that's sparking with electricity and Jongin barely manages to dodge it.

"What the hell, Dae!" Jongin shouts, more like growls, at the elder mage.

"Oh, it's you." And the stupid look in Jongdae's eyes disappears for a moment before it returns and Jongdae just continues walking like Jongin was never there in the first place.

With a roll of his eyes, Jongin reaches forward for Jongdae's shoulder and turns him around but Jongdae's not having it and easily slips out of his grasp. For someone who doesn't take training seriously, suddenly, Jongdae's become very hard to deal with. They spend a good ten minutes just trying to avoid one another and get a good clean hit to the other mage's face, and eventually it's Yongguk that grabs them both by the skull and tosses them in either direction.

"Cut it out! We don't have time for this!" Yongguk snarls, and though both Jongdae and Jongin are tensed and glaring at the warlock as if to dare him to try that again, Jongin sees the mage of lightning drop his shoulders in defeat.

"Don't try to stop me, Jongin."

Jongin just sighs again and hurries after him to grab him by the shoulder once more. He succeeds in stopping the elder mage, but when Jongdae turns and Jongin can see the pain floating in his eyes, Jongin lets him go.

"Fine. But I'm coming with you."

"What if something happens to you? The others won't forgive me if you get hurt." Jongdae says in refusal, shaking his head and even shoving Jongin aside because he doesn't want that responsibility, but Jongin grabs onto his wrist and pulls him right back.

"Don't you worry about me. You just focus on getting this done and back to the others." He says through grit teeth, and Jongdae stares at him for a few moments before he turns away in defeat.

Now Jongin knows he made the promise to just grab the foolish mage and run, but he's also curious to see Yuna again after all these centuries and he's not ready to have Jongdae face her alone. She may have been human once, but no one knew what had happened to her after being brought out from the ground.

"How far away are we, anyway?" Jongin asks, and Jongdae pulls the map closer to his face like even he's unsure at this point and Jongin just stares at him in bemusement because why is it this guy that decides to go out on his own?

"It should take about another three hours to get there." Jongdae replies, his voice dropping in enthusiasm because he's not the kind that likes walking for long periods of time.

"You're hopeless." Jongin grunts, and he pulls the map out of Jongdae's hands to look at the place the elder is looking at, and he pales because of course they're meeting up at the Isle of Death. What's a better place to reunite than at the place they lost their lives?

"I know what you're thinking." The elder mage sighs, and they both stop walking to look at one another.

"And you're sure this is the only way to help Yifan?" Jongin asks, glancing down at the map once more.

Jongdae just answers him with a helpless shrug and he turns his head to see the warlocks are silently following like they couldn't care less if it were the only way to save Yifan. Jongin drags a hand down his face because he'd prefer listening to Joonmyun's nagging over this but they all hold out their hands and place them on his shoulders and he teleports them to the isle.

"You'd better be right about this."

They glance at each other once more and then they're both shrugging because what else do they have to lose at this point? The temple that had once been floating in air was once again resting on the earth and they both shudder as they enter the building, but the inside is different from the outside. There are no machines anymore, it looks like an abandoned temple but there is something there; more like someone. Yuna is there, as beautiful as she was when they first met. Jongin freezes where he stands the moment he sees her because how could he help himself when he once thought of her as his whole world?

Jongdae's in the same boat and Jongin knows this without even looking because as important as Yuna was to him, she was to everyone else.

"Jongin, Jongdae." She calls, and her normally gentle tone is now breathless.

Jongin's heart flutters for a moment, but then he recognizes all the things about Yuna that are also part of Yun Seung and his heart sinks. How hadn't he noticed the similarities so well before?

"Yuna." Jongdae answers back, in a tone that is almost equally as breathless.

"We're here for the spell." Yongguk says, and it's only then that Jongin snaps back to his senses. That's right. Yuna is a necromancer, is feeding off of Yun Seung's energy, and is the only way they can find a way to bring the real Yifan back to them.

"There is none." Yuna says, honestly. Both Jongin and Jongdae freeze for a moment and before he can realize what he's doing, Jongin finds himself right before Yuna with a hand around her collar.

"What do you mean?" He hisses, because he's not in the mood to be played with right now, and he has half the mind to kill Yuna right then.

"A spell so powerful it can revive a Malthorian should he be too far from his home? It doesn't exist." Yuna clarifies, and Jongin drops her like a brick because he's just so dumbfounded.

"Then why are we here?" Jongdae demands, and there's electricity sparking on his fingers.

"Because... Yun Seung can save him." Yuna explains, and her eyes drift over to the warlocks behind them.

"Yun Seung sent us here believing you had a spell to help, and now you're telling us she's the only way to help the mage?" Himchan says from the back, bitter and resentful,

"Why couldn't you have asked her directly, since you can connect with her?"

"I wanted to see my mages." Yuna says, heartbroken. There are tears forming in her eyes and Jongin actually growls because of all the memories it brings to his mind.

Jongdae lunges before he can, but Yuna is suprisingly able to react fast enough to catch him by the wrist.

"Don't. Any pain I feel is felt by Yun Seung."

They're connected by pain, as well? Jongin's heart aches, because once again Yun Seung is facing the consequences of something she has absolutely no part in.

"So if we kill you now, Yun Seung's the only one that will feel it?" He asks, just to be sure.

Yuna nods, "Only if I'm killed by someone who shares my blood, will my body crumple and Yun Seung's body be restored to what it is."

So many conditions had to be filled in order to free Yun Seung from the shackles of her ancestors.

"Do you not care for Yun Seung at all?" Jongdae screams, and Yuna flinches. Even Jongin is surprised by Jongdae's outburst,

"You already had your chance, Yuna. You tricked us, betrayed us, and you captured us! Yun Seung has worked through so many dangerous obstacles to free us from what you did to us, and now you're back to life and taking her life away!"

"Trust me when I say this isn't what I asked for, Jongdae." Yuna sighs, and she reaches out to caress the side of his face,

"I'm fighting too, as hard as I can. For Yun Seung's sake."

Jongdae slaps her hand off his face and his glare is so strong that Jongin wonders if this mage is the same trouble making mage that he's been teamed up with for centuries,

"Don't you ever dare think this makes us allies, Yuna. I will do everything in my power to bring you to the grave."

As clouds form overhead and the sky darkens, Jongin realizes it's time he pull Jongdae away before he does something he'll regret. He shares a glance with the BAP warlocks behind him and there's a silent nod of approval as they all latch onto each other and Jongin grabs a hold of Jongdae.

When they finish teleporting, they're back at the camp with the other mages. The mages who immediately group around them. Only a few of them are worried. The rest, however, look absolutely furious and Jongin takes a step away to keep himself from getting punished.

"Dae-" Joonmyun calls, with a stoic expression, and it looks like he's going to start a lecture, but is cut off when a strand of lightning hits the ground just a foot away from their group.

"Why did you pull me away, Jongin?" Jongdae is trembling with anger and his hands are clenched at his sides. Jongin stares, mouth agape, as Jongdae turns to him. There's so much anger in his eyes that Jongin can't find any words to respond with. It's just so unnatural.

"Calm down, Dae." Chanyeol calls, and he reaches out to grab hold of Jongdae, but Jongdae dodges quickly.

"Calm down?!"  Jongdae hollers, and now he's basically sparking with electricty all over his body,

"Yuna is still alive, killing the one person whose ever treated us without bias, and I'm supposed to calm down?! While she swears to be on our side after everything she's done to us?"

Jongin is frightened of this side of Jongdae, and he's not the only one. Both Sehun and Zitao are inching closer to Yifan even though the second leader is powerless as he is. On the other hand, Luhan and Yixing are watching them in worry that he's going to hurt himself. Minseok and Joonmyun watch from the side and they look calm but they're ready to fight if it comes down to that. Jongdae's closest friends in the group, Chanyeol and Baekhyun just stand down because they seem to know something about Jongdae that the others don't know.

"Because you still have me," calls Yun Seung's voice, and all of their heads snap in the direction of Yun Seung's voice. There she is, as determined and as caring as she always is. She walks toward Jongdae and she doesn't seem to realize he's covered with electricity, just reaches out and wraps her arms around Jongdae. He's pulled against her and immediately, his powers quell.

"How did you know we were here?" Jongin asks, because he hadn't called for her- no one had.

"The warlocks," Yun Seung answers, and she pulls back just slightly as she looks over the mages and then back to Jongin.

"What did she say? About saving Yifan?"

So, Jongin explains what Yuna had told them, all the while watching as Yun Seung calmed Jongdae down. It was still a surprise how quickly everyone had grown attached towards Yun Seung, even to the point of going against Yuna who they had so much of a connection with. When Jongdae is calm, looking absolutely exhausted after his fit of rage, Yixing wraps an arm around his shoulder and both he and Minseok take him to his tent.

"The power to save Yifan is with me?" Yun Seung asks, dumbfounded. The rest of the mages are also dumbfounded, Jongin included.

Yun Seung is a human, so how could she possibly have the power to save Yifan? His eyes roam over to Yifan, and the second leader just stares at Yun Seung for a moment before his eyes lift to the sky. Jongin wonders what exactly is going on in the mind of his second leader that has him staring at the sky like such. Is he still thinking of the home he lost? Yifan looks down then and catches his gaze, and there's a haunted, heartbroken look in his eyes.

He was always thinking about his home.

Hey there, readers! It's been a very, very long time since I've last updated this. I have no excuses, honestly. This chapter has been sitting, half finished, in a draft mode since August, 2016. That's a long long time. But here I am, with another update that is heavy and possibly full of angst. Nothing's changed, huh? xD Anyway, I'll try to get back on top of these updates but of course, knowing me, it's probably something I need to prove before I say I'll do it. Whoops.

I have a question though. How are you guys doing? I miss asking you all questions because it was fun reading your responses. Anyhow, I hope you enjoy this chapter. Love always, RawChicken.
