Warnings: this is so awkward i'm gonna cry
“Daddy? When are you coming home?”
Sehun can hear mumbling, Jongin’s talking to Sojin, and then his husband is on the line. “When are you getting back? Sojin is getting antsy. She likes you more than she likes me, anyway, so she misses you.”
Sehun bites back an “And you don’t?” and replies instead, “Soon. I just have to finish up this project. I’m almost done.”
“Alright. Hurry up.” Jongin makes to hang up, and Sehun notices that he doesn’t end with “I love you” anymore. He hurries to say something else.
“Does this mean that I’m important again?” Maybe not the best choice of words, actually, but Sehun’s tired and done and he wants to talk to Jongin, and not feel insignificant.
Jongin sighs. “Not now, Sehun-”
“Don’t, Jongin,” Sehun interrupts. “We need to talk. We need to talk this out, whatever this is. Please.” Sehun holds back a sigh. “At least do this for Sojin, if you don’t want to do it for ‘us’. I love you.”
Jongin shuffles around. “Come back home, and we’ll talk,” and then he hangs up, and Sehun waits until the dial tone comes on to put down his phone, still waiting for the other to say back, “I love you too.” But he didn’t, and Sehun takes a deep breath and forces every thought out of his mind.

Jongin knows it’s all his fault - he should have tried harder, listened more, loved more. If all relationships had someone who loved more, then it would be Sehun. It wasn’t that Jongin didn’t love Sehun - he loved him so much it felt like his entire world revolved around that stupid laugh and quirky jokes - but Sehun would always show his love, in such unexpected and discreet ways (because, really, anyone who knew Sehun would never have thought that he could even fall in love) and it made Jongin regret, because there were so many things that he could have done differently, but he didn’t, and now they’re on the verge of falling apart, and Jongin just doesn’t know how to handle it. He regretted, because Sehun deserved so much more.
But then Sojin tugs on his pants and asks, innocent eyes wide open, “Why is appa crying? Is Daddy not coming back?”
Jongin wipes away his tears, fighting against the urge to cry harder. “Daddy’s going to be home soon.” And Sojin breaks away with the most beautiful smile Jongin has ever seen and, “We won’t ever leave you, sweetie, I promise,” because Sojin is such an innocent and trusting little child even though her birth parents left her when she was old enough to remember, and Jongin thinks that it isn’t just Sehun who deserves better, Sojin does too.
He smiles, then, because he loves her so much, and swings her up and rests her in his arms. “Let’s wait for Daddy on the couch, okay? You can be the first one to greet him at the door.”
