Chicken

Let's Play Fair!

"What's the big deal about choosing Goo Hara over me a while ago?!" Jackson pouted as he watched Youngji get their lunch box from her bag. The two were already inside the cafeteria, seated at the table near the window. Just three tables away from them on the right was Hara, watching the two closely. Two tables away on their left was where Jackson's friends were seated, doing the same.

"You made me choose, and I answered honestly," Youngji answered as she reached out a pair of chopsticks to Jackson, "You may eat now."

Jackson opened the brown lunch box in front of him, and saw a meal consisting of rice, chapchae, chicken balls, and pork cutlets. He smiled widely at the sight of homecooked food, "Did you make these?" he asked.

"Um, yeah, except for the chapchae," Youngji answered after taking a bite of the pork cutlet she had on her lunch box, "My mom made it last night for dinner. I saw some leftovers this morning, so I decided to reheat it for lunch."

Jackson's eyes shifted from his lunch box to Youngji's lunch box, and he can't help but to squint his eyes after noticing the difference between the two.

Youngji noticed Jackson's sudden silence, "Is there something wrong?"

"I want your lunch box," Jackson remarked.

"What?"

"I said I want your meal. Let's swap lunch boxes," Jackson pushed his lunch box away from him before grabbing Youngji's.

"Hey, hey! What are you doing?!" Youngji exclaimed as she tried pulling her lunch box back, "Give it back! They're just the same!"

"No, they're not!" Jackson retorted, "Yours have five chicken balls! Mine only had three! You're not fair when you made my lunch!" he held Youngji's lunch box tighter. Jackson was too stubborn with his food. But Youngji was even more stubborn.

"Gimme that!" she exclaimed as she firmly pulled her lunch box away from Jackson, and at the same time, being very careful not to spill the food.

A few more seconds of pushing, pulling, and struggling passed, and Jackson Wang had decided to do what he should have done minutes ago after seeing Youngji's lunch, "Ah, you're not letting go that easily, eh?" he smirked.

"That's my food!" Youngji exclaimed.

"It's mine now!" Jackson grinned before coughing straight on the lunch box, "It's mine now!"

The dumbfounded Youngji couldn't believe in what she had just seen: Jackson Wang coughed all over her food. She wore a dumb-stricken face as she watched Jackson eat her food.

"You are... disgusting," she mumbled.

"You can still have the meal you prepared for me," Jackson smiled, referring to the lunch box which only had three chicken balls in it.

It was definitely not her day, Youngji thought to herself, "But I want those chicken balls," she whispered to herself, before taking the lunch box Jackson was supposed to have. And the sight of only three chicken balls made her feel even worse. With a gloomy face, Youngji started eating, trying to shun the idea that she had less chicken balls.

"You're mom's a good cook!" Jackson chortled with his mouth half-full of chapchae, before turning to look at Youngji. He was expecting her to respond with a smile or a thank-you, but instead, there she was, eating quietly with a disappointed look on her face.

Jackson knew it was his fault.

"Hey, Heo Youngji."

"What?" Youngji asked without looking at him.

Jackson bit his lip in anxiousness. He was guilty, though he was wondering why he had to feel that way. Since when did he get affected by Youngji's mood?

An awkward silence started between the two. Or to be precise, it was only Jackson who was feeling it. Yes, he has been making fun of Youngji since first year, but at that moment, everything seemed different.

"Here."

Youngji's eyes widened as she saw a chicken ball in front of her. She slowly looked up in front of her, and saw Jackson reaching out the chicken ball using his chopsticks towards her.

"Have it," he spoke.

"Huh?" Youngji could not believe what Jackson had just said. Just a few minutes ago, he seemed like he was willing to choke her just to have the chicken balls, but at that moment, he seemed like a good guy who gives free chicken balls on a daily basis. Youngji creased her forehead, thinking that he might be playing a prank on her of some sort, "What are you doing?"

"Um, giving you a chicken ball?" Jackson also creased his forehead, wondering if he was doing the right thing.

"You already coughed all over that," Youngji sighed, and in no way she would eat food infected by Jackson Wang's saliva.

Jackson scowled, not enjoying Heo Youngji being disgusted by him, "Hey, that was just a fake cough! It's still clean!" he exclaimed before dropping the chicken ball on Youngji's lunch box, "Eat it, before I change my mind!"

Youngji's eyes were fixed on Jackson for a few minutes, before looking at the chicken ball on her lunch box. Was it real? Did Jackson just shared his food?

"Th--thank you," Youngji smiled warmly before she continued eating. Jackson was already stealing glances on her, and he couldn't help but to also crack a smile on his face.

"Yeah, don't mention it," he mumbled to himself.

Everything seemed to be going peacefully in their lunch table, but unbeknownst to the two, they were already being spied on by their friends.

Hara has been keeping a hawk-eye on Jackson Wang, "You make one wrong move on my Youngji and I'll make sure the sun won't rise for you anymore," she seethed as she ate her salad.

And on the other table were Jackson's friends, who seemed to be enjoying the view.

"Yugyeom! Get your phone quickly! Take a video of those two!" Jinyoung ordered to his younger friend.

"For what?" Yugyeom asked.

Jinyoung wore a suspicious look on his face, "We'll use that to blackmail Jackson to have him do all of our homeworks!"

Yugyeom sighed; he had enough of his silly hyung, "Why don't you use your own phone?"

"Ah, its memory is already full."

"Yeah, his phone's already full of Suzy's photos and videos," Youngjae snickered, to which Jinyoung responded with a scowl.

"Suzy? Suzy from Miss A?" a smile slowly appeared in Yugyeom's face, "I didn't know Jinyoung hyung's a fan of hers!"

"Shut up! This conversation's supposed to be about Jackson!" Jinyoung retorted, though what Youngjae had said was true; he was a big fan of Bae Suzy.

Jaebum couldn't help but feel pity for himself for being stuck in a group of high schoolers whose mental age is six. He silently ate his lunch, before noticing that Jackson and Youngji had already left, "Hey, did you guys see where Jackson and Heo Youngji went?" he asked with a surprised look on his face.

The small squabble among Jinyoung, Yugyeom, and Youngjae came to a stop because of Jaebum's query.

"We should go and look for them!" Youngjae beamed.

-

"PE class is next," Jackson sighed as he walked with Youngji back to their classrooms, "Now, Heo Youngji, you should carry my stuff to the quadrangle!"

Youngji just stayed silent; her thoughts were already all over the place that she didn't notice him speaking to her. Jackson had a puzzled look on his face as he looked at Youngji, "Hey, Heo Youngji, are you okay?"

"Hm, huh?" Youngji turned to look at him, "Ah, I'm okay. I'm just thinking about something."

"Don't tell me you're still hungry," Jackson smirked, hoping that his basic joke would make her laugh, or cringe. But she didn't.

"I'm okay. I just feel a bit... lightheaded," Youngji wore a blank look on her face.

Jackson was about to say something, but a student came up and approached them.

"Hi!" the student greeted. Youngji and Jackson turned to look, and the student seemed to be their junior. He had a friendly smile on his face and he was holding onto a rolled up newspaper.

"Hello," Youngji smiled back. Jackson just gave the student a piercing look.

"I'm Kunpimook Bhuwakul, please call me Bambam," the student smiled, "I'm from Class 2-A, and um," but the smile was slowly replaced by an embarrassed look on his face, "I'm a big fan of your articles, Youngji noona."

"Articles?" Jackson was a bit surprised.

"Oh, thank you," Youngji gushed. The articles Bambam was referring to were Youngji's writings being published every semester as a part of the school newspaper, "I never expected that people would read my column."

"I enjoy reading your column, noona," Bambam's face lit up, "Please sign my copy of the newspaper," he held out the newspaper he was carrying and a pen.

Jackson already had an irritated look on his face, "Yeah sure, kid, but Youngji noona and I are in a hurry so--"

"Sure!" Youngji beamed before taking the pen and the newspaper from Bambam. And while she signed the newspaper, Bambam's smile grew wider.

While Jackson's scowl became grimmer.

Youngji held out the signed newspaper and pen afterwards, "I'm glad I already have a fan," she chuckled.

"Now go, kid. Scram," Jackson hissed. But Bambam didn't leave, nor paid attention to Jackson.

"Youngji noona?"

"Yes?"

Bambam pursed his lips, and took a deep breath before continuing to speak...

"Will you go out with me?"

"What?" Youngji's eyes widened after hearing Bambam's question.

But Jackson's reaction was more intense than hers, "Wait, what?!" he had a mortified look on his face, as if Bambam was asking him to chop off his head.

"I--I really like you, noona!" Bambam smiled, and he was already blushing.

Youngji felt her heart beat faster; it was her first time experiencing being confessed to. She was about to say something, but even before she could speak, Jackson wrapped his arm around Bambam and pulled him farther, away from Youngji.

"Hey!" Youngji called out, "Where are you taking him?!"

"Oh, I'll just give this kid a pep talk!" Jackson smiled widely, before turning to look at the confused Bambam, "Yo, kid."

"What?"

"Do you know who am I?" Jackson hissed.

Bambam nodded, "You're Wang Ka-yee, member of the national fencing team. Why?"

"Stay away from Heo Youngji, or I'll tie you up in a fence."

Jackson expected the younger to back down, run away, and never talk to Youngji again. He was pretty confident that he was able to scare Bambam.

But things didn't turn out the way he planned.

"Hah. Why should I do that? Are you her boyfriend?" Bambam grinned, before turning on his back and approaching Youngji again, leaving Jackson with a dumbfounded look on his face.

"The nerves of that sophomore!" he thought to himself, before following Bambam and making sure that things won't go his way.

"Youngji noona?" Bambam asked, shyly.

"Y--yes?" Youngji forced a smile.

"I'm waiting for your answer."

"Ah," Youngji was startled. So, Bambam was really serious with going out with her, "Um, you see--"

Jackson quickly grabbed Youngji by the arm, "You see we're already late for class, bye!" he interrupted before dragging Youngji away from him.

"Wait, noona!" Bambam called out, worriedly.

"I--I'll see you around, Bambam! Then we could talk about that!" was the only thing Youngji was able to say, as she was being dragged by a ticked off Jackson Wang away from the poor kid.

-

"You are so mean!" Youngji scowled at Jackson while she stood in front of his seat, as Jackson was busy fixing his sports bag for PE class.

"And also, you are so rude for interrupting Bambam!" Youngji added. She was the one who felt embarrassed about Jackson's attitude a few minutes ago, "And you are so evil for dragging me like that in the corridor!"

Jackson furrowed his eyebrows after hearing her little sermon. He pushed his bag towards Youngji, "Take it. Bring that to the quadrangle for PE class," he spoke firmly.

But Youngji was still determined to reprimand Jackson of what he did, "You know what? We should look for Bambam and you apologize to him! Look at you! You're already a senior but you still don't have your manners!"

Jackson gave Youngji a glare, "You're just being like that because that Bambam confessed to you. And now you think you're all pretty and cute because someone just asked you to go out with him?" he cackled, "You're just average-looking. Nothing special."

Youngji felt her whole world stop after hearing Jackson's words. She didn't think of herself as someone who was cute, nor pretty. But hearing his words still made her feel bad. Youngji bit her lip in annoyance and clenched her fists.

Jackson sighed, "Take my bag, Heo Young--"

"I hate you!" Youngji couldn't contain her emotions anymore; she was trembling when she said those words, "You're the worst person I've met!" she exclaimed before grabbing his bag and dashing outside Jackson's classroom. Just in time, Jaebum and his friends went inside, and were still able to witness Youngji's reaction.

"Woah, woah, what happened?" Youngjae asked, "Lover's quarrel?"

Jackson sighed, "It was... nothing."

Yugyeom quickly sat in front of Jackson, "Hyung, you made Youngji noona cry!"

Jackson gulped. Well, he didn't expect that Youngji would react like that with his words. He quickly turned to look at Jaebum, with a curious face. He was expecting Jaebum to snicker or to laugh at him, meaning Yugyeom was only joking.

But Jaebum wore a straight face.

Jackson knew it.

Yugyeom was not pulling a joke on him when he said that he saw Youngji crying.

“You were too harsh,” Yugyeom sighed, before going back to his seat, “We should go and prepare now for PE class, guys.”

The only thing Jackson could do was to sigh. He didn’t know what to tell Youngji when they see each other for PE class.

Always coming back to see if you updated. It would be nice to update this fanfiction, even if there's no desire left for Jackji. This fanfiction makes my heart twist and turn and queasy and legit squirm over the cuteness of these too. It never fails me to smile and brighten my day :)
