Chapter 4

Fatal Error

Hongbin gaped at the scene below, and started losing it. His hands started shaking as he gripped the glass windows. Out of frustration, he hit the glass as hard as he could with one of his fists before dashing to the door. He was soon stopped by Chief Hakyeon who gripped his arm to keep him from leaving. “Lee Hongbin! Explain yourself. Taking phone calls in the middle of a meeting! Acting like a crazed psychopath! Have you lost your mind!?” he hissed at him, clenching his teeth in frustration. “You will not screw this up! Now get back on that podium and I’ll try really hard to forget what just happened.” Hongbin stared straight at his Chief Officer and forcefully shrugged his arm away. “Get.Away.From.Me” he declared and shoved him aside and made a beeline to the stairs.

Hongbin descended flight after flight of stairs until he finally reached the lobby. He threw the glass doors open and ran down the street. Hongbin froze, trying to let everything sink in, but it didn’t. Now everything moved too fast for him to keep up. The whole street had been blocked off as a crowd of people crowed behind yellow caution tape as police officers searched the area and an ambulance truck was lifting a gurney into the truck. The gurney. That was his target. Hongbin shoved through the mob and ducked under the caution tape. He never lost his locked gaze at the gurney, even as police officers started to crowd him and pull him back. Hongbin took out his police badge and shoved it in their face without losing his gaze. The officers stopped struggling against him as Hongbin finally made it into the truck. There were three doctors inside, securing the gurney and connecting dozens of tubes together. Hongbin looked at the gurney, which was draped in a white cloth, covering the person underneath. One of the doctors looked at Hongbin and questioned him. “Sir, I don’t think you want to be in here at this time” he suggested. Hongbin didn’t look at him. “She’s my girlfriend, I’m not leaving her side…please…is she ok…” he begged, gripping on the sides of the gurney. The doctor sighed. “That’s what we’re going to find out…Doctor Jihoon! Close the doors! We need to get to the hospital immediately.” He demanded and another doctor shut the doors and spoke into a walkie talkie. The truck started up and it soon sped away from the scene.

Hongbin held his balance by gripping the side of the gurney and watched as the doctors scrambled around the confined space they had. “Sir…are you sure you will be alright?” one asked, clearly concerned about Hongbin. Hongbin nodded without responded. Then one of the doctors pulled off the white cloth, revealing the person underneath. Hongbin almost fainted at the sight.

It was Youngji. Heo Youngji. The girl Hongbin fell in love with exactly two years ago. The girl Hongbin finally decided to marry. The girl who put up with all of his mistakes because she loved him. The girl that finally walked out on him after being fed up with his behavior and came back after three days of Hongbin being tortured in a living hell. Now this girl, this girl that blurred out his ambitions and dreams for the sake of her happiness now lay unconscious on a gurney in an ambulance. Her once beautifully flawless skin is now covered in scrapes and scratches. Her gorgeous flowing brown hair lay matted and soaked in blood. Her beautiful smile is now wiped away with an emotionless, stern look as her shimmering eyes remain shut, unable to meet his. Tears began to streak down Hongbins face as he reached for her hand. He leaned down and kissed it, pressing his forehead on her unconscious arm. “Youngji-ah…Youngji!” he cried, burring his face. The doctors proceeded cleaning up the blood and managed to wrap a bandage around her head to stop the bleeding. Hongbin looked up, tears staining his face. “How is she?” he asked desperately. The Doctor, Jihoon, spoke first. “She’s in critical condition. The major impact caused a hard blow to the head resulting in brain trauma. At this rate, if the brain continues to receive less oxygen, it could be fatal” he explained. Hongbin let go of Youngji’s hand and charged the doctor. He gripped his hand on his throat and pressed him up against the side of the truck. The doctor struggled at his grip and started gagging. The other two doctors immediately pulled Hongbin away and restrained him as Doctor Jihoon collapsed on the floor, gasping for air. “Sir! We need you to be calm!” one told him. Hongbin struggled against their hold on him and kept his eyes locked on Doctor Jihoon. “She will live! SHE WILL!” He screamed and tried breaking free, but couldn’t. Doctor Jihoon slowly got up and regained his composure. “I understand your frustration, but please be aware of the facts. There is a slight chance she will live. She was hit by a car and suffered a traumatizing blow to the head. We will do our best to save her, but we can’t make any promises.” He calmly explained. This enraged Hongbin even more. “YOU’LL TRY?! YOU’LL TRY?! “He yelled at him, making another lunge at him. He was again restrained by the two doctors. “Look! Knock it off! I know everything must be all happening too fast, but can we please think about the patient right now!” one of the doctors declared. Hongbin stopped struggling. How would Youngji feel right now? He was picking a fight with a doctor who was trying to save Youngji, he suddenly felt sick. But then again that stupid doctor started it anyways with his stupid little-

“I’m sorry”, he said stopping himself, “I’m just a little…fragile right now. And positive thoughts would be helpful thanks…”

The doctors released him and Hongbin made his way back over to Youngji, still lying unconscious. Most of the blood had been cleaned off and a large bandage was now tied to her head. Hongbin sighed, he started to calm himself down by distracting himself with the subtle roar of the engine and movements of the truck on the rough streets. Doctor Jihoon took out his walkie talkie and spoke into it. “Are we approaching the hospital?” he asked. A voice answered back. “Pulling into the parking lot now”

The doctors unstrapped the gurney and gripped it tight. The truck then came to a stop and the doors quickly opened. The three doctors hurriedly unloaded the gurney and wheeled it through the automatic hospital doors. Hongbin followed close behind, picking up his steps to keep up. The doctors wheeled her into a room labeled “Emergency”. Hongbin was quickly stopped by another doctor before he reached the room. “Excuse me sir, you cannot go in there” he said, blocking Hongbin’s path. Hongbin tried pushing him away, but the doctor stood his ground. “Look, I need to be in there with her…please…just let me be with her” he said desperately. The doctor shook his head. “I’m sorry, no one unauthorized can enter, please remain seated in our waiting room” he said, and gestured to the waiting room across the hall. Hongbin reluctantly walked over to the waiting room and sat down in a chair. He buried his face in his hands and lost himself. He felt his whole being start to fall apart and his tears endlessly fell from his eyes.
