Foreword

A loud crack of thunder pierced the night sky, echoing in your ears as you jerked backwards in shock, the book you had firmly grasped in your hand now tumbling towards the ground. You stood frozen, the impact of the skin curdling sound making your blood run cold, your eyes wide open in fear. Your feet remain planted to the ground, your breath hitched in your throat as you hesitantly turn your head towards the window, watching the rain plummet endlessly across the glass. You took a deep and shaky breath as your eyes fluttered shut, focusing on trying to distract yourself with the loud taps of water droplets against the window. Suddenly, another loud crack of thunder forced a terrifying scream from your throat, your body collapsing to the floor as your fingers desperately dug into the carpet. This all felt too familiar to you. You squeezed your eyes shut. Images beginning to flash in your mind as the familiar feeling washed over you.

You were in a car. It was pitch black outside and you were driving down a rain soaked road ahead of you. The only source of light was that of the dim headlights coming from the car. Your mother was beside you, her hand firmly gripping the wheel as her eyes locked to the road ahead. A sharp crack of thunder shook the car, as it suddenly swerved off the road and everything went black.

“Mom!” you shrieked, your hands flying to grip your hair as the thunder roared outside. Familiar tears began to well in your eyes as those vivid images began flashing .You found yourself out of breath, that vivid memory coming back to you again just as it did almost every night. Only this time it was worse, you felt as if you were reliving it.

Suddenly another sound rung throughout your apartment, it took you a moment to process until you realized it was your phone ringing in your pocket. With a shaken hand, you slipped it out and brought it to your ear. “H-hello?”

“(Y/N)?! Is that you?!”

“Y-Yoongi?”

“Yes, yes it’s me. Are you ok?”

“Y-Yeah I-I’m fine” Your eyes darted to the window, focusing on the rapid raindrops streaking down the windows.

“Where are you?”

“I’m at home…Yoongi-“

“Don’t move, I’ll be right over.”

The line suddenly went dead and you slowly dropped the phone from your ear, letting it fall from your fingertips and watching it hit the ground. You remained on the floor, digging your nails into the carpet as you sunk your head, squeezing your eyes shut. You flinched as another crack of thunder shook the walls, echoing throughout your apartment. You felt your body involuntarily begin to shake, fighting off the sudden flashing thoughts forcefully drowning inside your head.

You were shaken again by the violent knock on your door, causing your to lift your head. “W-who’s there?” you stuttered, your breath unsteady.

“It’s me! (Y/N), open the door.”

You struggled to make it back on your feet, your legs turning to lead with every step, threatening to collapse from under you. You strongly gripped onto the doorknob as you turned it, allowing you to keep your balance. As you opened the door, you were met by Yoongi, his clothes soaked from the rain, his hair disheveled and stuck to his forehead, water dripping down his face. “Y-Yoongi?”

He didn’t speak, he held out his arms and reached out and pulled you into his embrace. “Are you alright?” he whispered closely to your ear, running his hand up and down your back. You suddenly felt more relaxed as he held you in his arms, rain continuing to fall around you.

“Come on, let’s go inside” he said and you nodded, making your way back inside your apartment, closing the door behind you.

“Yoongi…you’re wet”

He managed a smile, looking down at his soaked clothes. “Yeah…”

“I’ll go get a towel”

Suddenly a loud crack of thunder surged through the sky, stopping you in your tracks, sending chills down your spine. Yoongi immediately was at your side, holding your shoulders. “Hey, hey it’s alright. I’ll go get one. Just stay here.”

You nodded, walking over to the wall and letting your body sink towards the floor, bringing your knees to your chest.

Yoongi came out a few moments later, a few of the buttons on his shirt undone, wrapping a towel around his shoulders as he sat beside you against the wall.

“Why did you call me?” you finally said.

“You’re my best friend…once I heard the thunder I had to call and make sure you were ok”

“Yoongi…”

“Ever since you told me about when your mom died…I just can’t help but worry about you whenever there’s a thunderstorm. I just needed to know that you were safe.”

“I-I’m fine, you don’t need to worry about me”

Another roar of thunder echoed through the room, causing you to involuntarily flinch, gripping onto your knees.

Yoongi painfully watched your reaction, unsure how to respond. He hesitantly placed a hand on your shoulder causing you to look up at him.

“Don’t lie to me”

You pursed you lips, avoiding his persistent stare. You looked up and noticed his sopping wet hair, still dripping down his face. You grabbed the towel from him, reaching up and rubbing it on his head, drying his hair. He smiled, watching you intently.

When you finally pulled away from him, you noticed his eyes locked onto yours. You ignored the growing tension between the two of you as you cleared your throat. “You shouldn’t be outside in the rain, you could’ve gotten sick because of me.”

“As long as I’m by your side it doesn’t matter”

“Ya! Min Yoongi!”

A loud crack of thunder shook the night sky, shaking your body, a small scream coming from your throat.

Yoongi grabbed your hands, pulling you gently towards him.

“(Y/N)! Look at me!”

You hesitantly complied, but as another roar of thunder followed, you squeezed your eyes shut, feeling yourself on the verge of tears at the horrific sound.

“Don’t take your eyes off me, just focus on my voice. Look at me”

You did as he said, gripping onto his hands, staring deep into his eyes.

“I’m right here, right beside you. Everything’s going to be ok, trust me”

You took a deep breath, focusing on the soothing tone of his voice. “Yoongi-ah”, you said, resting your head on his shoulder, nuzzling closer to him as you felt your eyes flutter shut. “Thank you…for staying with me”

He lifted up a hand and hesitantly brought it to your head, calmly your hair.

“I’ll always be there for you…no matter what”
