chapter 8

Chérie (Remake)

The Day I got Kikwang’s Number ^~^ - October 2nd, 2010.

Surrounding stickers with emojis and hearts, So-Hyun quickly taped the accessories to the page that was dedicated to her life’s memories. She spent hours working on the scrapbook, using this to advantage as a slideshow for all her past but cherished memories. It was a lovely hobby that had always been peaceful for her. Her mother would leave her in isolation after seeing the girl intently focusing on the printings of the fonts. Hell, even her siblings left the young girl in peace, knowing their older sister wanted to be left alone.

Hearing a vibration from her phone, she quickly bursted into a smile to reply to one of her best friends now;

From: Kikwang~

Haha, okay, okay. You win, but I have to go rehearse for a dance. I’ll text back asap okay? ^-^

She’d learn that Kikwang had a hobby for dancing. It was still a bit confusing, as he would randomly call his dancing rehearsals, ‘performances’ but she would simply ignore the misunderstandings.

To: Kikwang~

Alright oppa, but hurry up! I’m bored. xD

And the message was sent with a simple touch on the ‘send’ button. Continuing to decorate the page, So-Hyun quickly pulled out her cameras which contained several amounts of pictures with her and Kikwang. Choosing the one where the two posed adorably, with their cheeks puffing out, she printed it quickly, and stamped it onto the page. The clear picture was then surrounded by a hand-drawn frame with joyful words that described their friendship; adorable, friends, joyful, pabo.

The two’s friendship quickly progressed after she had gotten his number, where then the two human beings started texting each other constantly and constantly. Their conversations had varied from light conversations to heavy during-the-night conversations, topics ranging from their school incidents to baby childhood memories. She couldn’t help but stay up as he did as well, though sometimes he was caught by his other hyungs. She learned that Kikwang lived in a dorm, which was coincidental since Doojoon also lived in a dorm. Small world, she assumed. The days that contained long conversations ended up being her favorite days of the week while the days that held their long phone calls ended up being her favorite types of days in all. Though her family was still quiet without Grandpa home, So-Hyun had to keep quiet, as if she was caught by her mother, she would be doomed.

Whispering into the phone was hard though, especially with Kikwang as he had to whisper too before he would wake up all his hyungs inside the dorm who slept in the same room as him. Sometimes, if So-Hyun was that close to the phone, she could hear the other boys snoring, and sometimes even sleep talk, and whenever that happened, the two struggled to keep in their laughs without bursting out into loud laughters.

~

As well as Kikwang’s friendship progressing rapidly, her friendship with Doojoon had also progressed heavily, and quite frankly, it was similar to her friendship with Kikwang. Doojoon was usually always busy though, and his schedules weren’t as flexible as Kikwang’s were so the two didn’t converse as much as Kikwang and So-Hyun had. Though his busy life became a barrier, the two still managed to hang out once every week, going to the near cafe where she always went with Suzy in their leisure time. The two would just drink a smoothie, despite the cold weather, and listen to the low-hummed jazz musics that played over the intercoms. It was a rather peaceful situation overall and she enjoyed that.

The two quickly exchanged numbers the first time they met up with each other after a long study-hall day was concurred, conversating quickly, ranging from different topics to topics. Though both boys were completely different in personalities, So-Hyun felt as if they had some connection to each other some way. Suspiciously as well, whenever she asked them if they knew each other, they would each shrug off the question quickly without giving her a clear answer.

“Hey Doojoon-ah, do you know Lee Kikwang?” So-Hyun had asked, sipping her strawberry smoothie she always got everytime they went there. Even the owners of the shop began the usual routines as soon as they entered the cafe that bursted with a heat wave.

Doojoon became shocked, his eyes quickly widening, but soon regaining it’s normal posture. He quickly stammered in his minds of what to tell the girl. Soon after a long sipping of his own smoothie, he replied, “Kikwang? Yeah, I know him.”

It was a small question though he acted as if it was a big one.

“Ohh, are you good friends with him?” So-Hyun asked, now interested in the two’s friendship.

Raising his eyebrow, Doojoon’s mouth quickly smirked, gesturing his eyebrows. He would take this into a complete different direction,“ Why, do you like him, So-Hyun-ah?”

The tables of the conversation had quickly flipped as she immediately shook her head viciously, “No! Ani! Don’t say that, he’s just a friend and I was wondering. You two seem alike, that’s all!” She yelled, waving her hands wildly in frustrations.

Guess she really doesn’t know we’re in an idol group. Doojoon thought, staring at the girl’s adorable actions.

That’s fine with me. I’ll tell her soon enough.

Soon.

“Alright, alright. Jeez, I’m just messing with you.” Doojoon playfully said, which earned had him a slight slap on his forehead.

“Pabo.” She muttered quietly, continuing to sip her smoothie before erupting into playful grins.

~

Putting up her scrapbook, So-Hyun pulled her trench coat before yelling into the hallways,

“I’m going out for a walk, umma! It’s too hot in here!”

Soon, the gentle voice had yelled back, “Alright, it’s super cold, make sure you have a coat and don’t be home too late!”

“Arasso!” And with that, So-Hyun was in the cold breeze, with the slight winds blowing into her face, already numbing her quickly.

~

It was slightly late at night, so most pedestrians weren’t out like they always were, but it was still filled decently with people fluttering around stores or regular pedestrians walking to destinations.

So-Hyun had crossed the streets, making her way towards the regular parks she always liked to visit whenever she had thoughts to ponder about. This time though, they weren’t so negative as the past times had been, but yet, just regular thoughts.

The light blue skies had quickly darkened as soon as she reached her destination, where the familiar bench laid still rugged. Cushioning herself over the bench, she stared at the stars that had began to rise, as where the sun had already dived into the horizon, putting itself into a static period of slumber. The lunar figure was slowly rising over the trees on the east side, it’s bright white light shining onto the cities where several city lights had at this point.

Pulling out her iPhone, So-Hyun quickly dialed the numbers that were once familiar to her, but now had became vague as she struggled to remember it. No longer being able to remember it, she was forced to search upon her contacts to find the contact that was named, “Appa~”

The phone’s ringing tone rung a several times.

Then, a few more several times.

Finally, a last ring before a voice was heard.

“Hello? You reached the Park residence, we’re not here right now, but you can leave us a message.” Her dad’s familiar’s voice rung out in the English language. His fluency being there, while the first hello, was a misunderstanding. She remembered whenever the two had recorded the voicemail message, So-Hyun confusedly wondering why her dad had spoken into the phone despite no one talking.

Quickly being snapped out of the thoughts by the ringtone signalling the start of a new voicemail, So-Hyun shut off the phone, not wanting to bother her dad from his busy occupations. Her knees had automatically came up to her chest, as she heaved her arms around her knees, staring at the stars above.

Stars are out early tonight. She thought as the specks of light were brightly highlighted in the skies. They were a mere addition to the beautiful sceneries that laid around her.

“Hey, what are you doing here?” A hoarse voice called out, after several minutes passed by with her eyes just lingering onto the skies. She had recognized the cold voice. The voice she heard before school had even started in the hallways.

Son. ing. Dongwoon.

“What do you want, Dongwoon?” She coldly said, turning around to find the young boy’s brown eyes stare back at her tiredly. His blonde hair was spiked into a mohawk as it always was, while he wore a cardigan over his white shirt, with black jeans complimenting the styles. It felt weird to see the boy out of his uniform, but she didn’t really care about his appearance right now, but rather on why he was here.

“I come here all the time.” He replied, shrugging his shoulders before taking a seat next to her. It was awfully fishy how he had suddenly decided to sit next to her. She hadn’t even invited him.

Rudeass.

“Okay...but what do you want.” She had still dejected his kind words, remembering the cruel teasings him and Ye-Jin had committed throughout the past few weeks in school. She quickly scooted to the side of the bench, in to which he raised his eyebrows again.

Dongwoon shrugged once again, rubbing his hands on the back of his neck, “Just wanted to relax, but I guess we can talk if you want.”

So-Hyun shook her heads at the thought, “No. I’ll just leave.” And with that, her legs had unwrapped from the comfortable position, now standing on the cool grass.

Don’t let her go. Don’t let her go Dongwoon! He thought pressured from the requests his friend had him do.

“Come on, let’s just talk.” He groaned, pulling her arms down onto the bench which had shocked the young girl.

What the hell does he want?

~

“Come on Dongwoonie, just do it!” Ye-Jin had begged, sitting on his lap during the end of study halls. Her eyes fluttered in an adorable manner as he could sense her aegyo acting up on him.

“Yeah, Dongwoon! It’s just a joke, it’ll be funny.” His hyung said, sitting next to him while slapping their hands onto his back,

“You can do it~” Ye-jin added, her thin fingers caressing his cheeks.

Dongwoon wasn’t so sure about it though, as his good-side of his conscious took over, “I’m not sure, what if she gets really hurt? And does something else.” He worriedly said, refusing to the dared dares.

They got everything their way. And this wouldn’t be a different situation.

“It’s nothing too serious, just pretend you’re her friend, and we’ll do the rest!” Ye-Jin objected, still fluttering her eyes at him.

God damn it. Dongwoon couldn’t resist.

“Are you sure?” He asked unsurely, still skeptical about this idea.

Ye-Jin’s expressions quickly turned to a pouting phrase where her eyes widened, “Come on Woonie, it’s just a funny joke for us. Can’t you do me one little favor?”

He broke in.

He broke in despite his conscious nagging at him, “ALRIGHT! I’ll do it, now cut the dumb act.” He stubbornly said, pushing her off of him.

This better be worth it.

~

“No.”  So-Hyun said plainly, beginning to walk away slowly towards the roads.

“Comeeeee onn!” Dongwoon begged once again, persistently acting on the girl.

The boy continued, still gazing at the girl charmingly, “Just give me one more chance. I know, I been making fun of you, but let’s just talk.” He pleaded, his hands still gripping onto hers.

His forced hands were tight, leaving her unable to pull from them, instead forcing So-Hyun to sit down onto the bench again, a smile now forming onto Dongwoon’s face though her face remained cold.

“Alright, I’m sitting down, now what the hell do you want to talk about? Is it about homework again? For the ing last time, I’m not doing your damn homework.” She angrily dejected, refusing to stare back at him.

Dongwoon put on his acting phase from his god-looks, “Come on, I just want to talk.” He said dramatically, as if he was located in a drama. So-Hyun though, had a shallow ego inside of her, causing the girl’s disguise to be easily broken. And at this point, it was on the verge of breaking to pieces.

“About what?” She asked, rolling her eyes at the tone of the boy’s voice.

“Just...stuff. Normal stuff, we never really gotten to a good start.” He said, grinning sheepishly at the girl. The lunar crescent now shined throughout the city of Seoul, mixing along with the trances of the city lights which shined the city brightly, leaving no corners of the city dark and moody.

Stuff. Regular stuff. So-Hyun thought to herself, oblivious that her fragile ego was broken as she broke into his calming words,

“Arasso...what do you want to talk about?” She said, relaxing into his tensions, now being able to unravel her fingers from his.

~

“Uh..well..where are you from? Dongwoon asked, unable to keep up a strong, steady, ego for himself so that the girl wouldn’t become any more suspicious as she already was.

“California.” She stated blankly still, staring at the stars as she was a few minutes ago before being interrupted by this unexpected presence.

“Uh..where?” He asked stupidly, before So-Hyun realized they were in Korea.

“Ca. Li. For. Nia. United States.” She pronounced slowly, her English accents now showing in the fluency of her words.

“Coh..li..foh...nha..” Dongwoon slowly repeated after her, his Korean accents showing within the words easily.

So-Hyun couldn’t help but usher a small chuckle from his attempts at the difficult English pronunciations.

“Sure. You’re getting there.” She smoothly said, earning a sheepish grin from him.

~

Before they had even realized it, it was already close to ten. The light-humored conversations must’ve kept the two going for a long time. Because now, the moon was raised even higher towards the sky as stars began to replicate, now twice as many then they had saw a few hours ago.

Soon realizing that her mother was probably waiting for her arrival back at home, So-Hyun quickly interrupted the male’s light-humored joke,

“Yeah, it was pretty dum--”

“Omo! I have to get home, it’s almost ten!” So-Hyun cried out, immediately getting up onto her feet this time without his objections pulling her back. His face had quickly turned into a sudden disappointed face as a frown was formed onto his mouth quickly. Dongwoon’s sullen pout had turned into a worried gaze, as he now felt guilty for keeping her with him for a long time,

“Ah, I’m sorry for keeping you here so late.. “ He apologized, standing up from the bench.

She shook her head in objection, “It’s fine. It was fun.”

It really was.

They both grinned at each other shyly.

A few seconds after mustering enough the required amount of courage and bravery,

“Here, here’s my number.” He awkwardly said, ripping a piece of scribbled paper where the two had played multiple games of tic-tac-toes during the nighttime. After receiving the jotted notes, she quickly returned the gesture, writing her number this time, on the palm of his hands, slightly hoping he wouldn’t smudge it.

“Thanks..” She said, beginning to jog down the roads towards her house without turning around.

Gripping the pieces of paper that contained the handsome boy’s number, So-Hyun leaped in joy within her heart as she ran swiftly towards the middle-sized house.

She knew she was ed but she still leapt in joy.

Umma’s going to kill me.

Oh well.

~

It felt real for Dongwoon to talk to her, so casually. As if he didn’t have to pretend to be her friend. She was a nice girl, really.

Yeah, So-Hyun had been shy at first, but soon after, the two engaged into talkative conversations, unafraid to state their opinions to the other.

That was when he realized, she wasn’t the girl that the rumors and snickers had formed her to be.

After the girl’s shadow had disappeared and left his own shadow hanging in the lights, Dongwoon quickly regained himself, returning to his cold stance.

It’s only for the jokes. That’s all.

Looking down at the number that was printed onto his skin, his thoughts quickly wiped out of the past few hours, as he now paced himself back to the dormitory.

~

Pushing open the apartment doors, he was greeted upon by two boys sitting lazily on the couch, pressing buttons on the game controllers viciously. One of the boys had a Pikachu plush toy placed on his stomach while the other boy was recognized to be Yoseob with his black spiky hair, slicked down wetly.

“What were you doing out so late?” The boy with the Pikachu plush toy asked, his brown hair styled messily but then again neatly slicked down, slightly revealing his brown eyes. His deep voice was slightly echoing in the empty dorm that only consisted of the six boys from BEAST.

“Just out for a walk,. Guess I got carried away.” Dongwoon nervously said, not wanting to get in trouble with his hyungs.

, , Doojoon best be sleeping.

As if the two boys had seen through his thoughts, Yoseob assured him, “He’s sleeping, you’re not in any trouble.”

“He had a busy day with schedulings and crap today, so he fell asleep as soon as he got home. That’s why we’re up so late playing games.” Junhyung explained, forcing himself in a more mannerly position, only to press the buttons even more viciously though.

“Yah! Cheater!” Yoseob cried out loud, now propping himself against the spiral couch to attack the buttons more rapidly.

“How?!” Junhyung asked exasperatedly.

Dongwoon had left the two boys to themselves, stumbling slowly to the kitchen where he found Kikwang on his phone again. These days, Kikwang had been busily texting away on his phones despite their heavy and lengthy schedules for their upcoming comeback.

“Texting a girl again?” Dongwoon asked, smirking at the corners of his mouth.

“Haha, nah. Just a friend.” Kikwang replied, still smiling at the device’s screen sheepishly.

He was quickly reminded of the jotted number on his hand, where Dongwoon contemplated the decisions on whether he would text her.

Agh, no. It’s just a joke. Why would I want to be friends with that smartass .?

But of course, his other conscious had taken over once again, forcing the newly blonde male to send the girl a goodnight message.
