The rain caught them wandering around on the streets after seven that night.

Kyungsoo decided to have some coffee from his favorite place and Joonmyeon happened to be on shift at four fifteen, as always, the time rushed through the door.

“Now that I think about it, I didn’t bring my umbrella” –they both chuckled– “I just didn’t think it would be true, about the storm I mean”

“My place is close, we can go and wait until it stops” –Kyungsoo’s voice was low and his eyes were glued to something in the long distance.

“Don’t worry”

“Come on”

The younger trapped Joonmyeon’s wrist in his right hand and guided him under the rain until they reached a small eaves. Kyungsoo shook a bit and crossed his arms on his chest for a while –the chill wind got him too soon this time. Joonmyeon took off his jacket and placed it on Kyungsoo’s shoulders, the younger thanked with a shy smile and the other couldn’t help it: he fixed Kyungsoo’s hair and placed a soft and warm kiss on his forehead.

Kyungsoo looked surprised –heat reaching his cheeks in matter of seconds– but this time he took Joonmyeon’s hand in his as they both started to run under the pouring rain, fingers still intertwined until they reached the younger’s neat apartment –Joonmyeon smiled, Kyungsoo was still his Kyungsoo.

“I’ll get everything settled for a warm shower, you can go first” –the younger told him and then Joonmyeon’s hand lost his– “You can get comfortable, I’ll be right back”

“I think it would be better if you go first, I can wait”

“I’m not accepting that, you’re my guest and I won’t allow you to catch a cold in your first visit here” –in your first visit, Joonmyeon smiled to the words– “Besides, your jacket really worked so come on”

With dry clothes and warm enough, they both watched the rain get worse with a bowl of instant ramen –lightening and thunders were constantly freely drawn in the skies as flashing lights, beautiful and fearful at the same time.

Kyungsoo never liked them. They looked powerfully beautiful against the darkness of the night and just a seconds later they disappeared without a single trace in the sky. And then the worst part: the strident sound.

“Do you know why the thunder follows the lightning?” –the younger shook his head and to Joonmyeon it could have never been cuter– “The lightning appears in the sky with such a beauty that when it gets lost in the darkness, the sky sends the thunder to find it”

Joonmyeon observed Kyungsoo’s smile grow, that beautiful heart-shaped smile.

“Joon, I’m not five years old” –Kyungsoo left on the floor his empty bowl– “But I like how it sounds from you. Tell me another one, I want to hear another of your childish stories”

“I think it’s too late, I should call a taxi”

“Not with that storm outside” –the younger looked away– “you can stay here, just spend this night here”

“I don’t think that’s a good idea”

“And I don’t think leaving this place with a thunder storm outside is smarter than that, stay for the night, if you don’t want to sleep on my bed then you can sleep on the couch”

“Are you sure Jongin won’t mind it if I stay?”

“Is that a yes?”

“Only if it won’t get you in troubles with your boyfriend”

“In the drawer I have new toothbrushes, you can pick whichever you like, except the one with Pikachu’s face on it, not that one”

“Jongin likes Pokemon?”

“Jongin has never spent the night here” –Kyungsoo cleared his throat– “The on with Pikachu is the one Baekhyun uses when he comes to watch a movie or when he doesn’t want to go back to his parents’ house and Chanyeol is on a trip. Would you mind it if I rest y head on your shoulder?” –Joonmyeon shook his head no while he enjoyed with a smile feeling the younger so close.

Joonmyeon started with something he knew the other will like, Orion’s story was special for both of them: it was Kyungsoo’s favorite. The younger trapped his lower lip between his teeth as he listened to it.

“So brave, able and handsome he was that Aphrodite laid her beautiful eyes on him, the goddess fell in love with a human but Orion couldn’t return her feelings because his heart already belonged only to the nymphs. A goddess wasn’t someone to reject and, as revenge for Orion’s fearlessly behavior, she turned the nymphs into stars so they can be always away from her hunter. Orion’s feelings were so strong that, as some people used to say…”

“…he begged to Zeus to let him go to their side, leaving everything behind just for their love. Zeus was compassionate and also pictured him in the skies accompanying the night, right to the nymphs’ side, making their love remembered trough the times” –Kyungsoo interrupted– “You know what? I don’t remember have read this story before, it’s beautiful”

“Then how do you knoe how it ends?” –Joonmyeon felt his heart race.

“I don’t know, I just know”

Silence could be heard for a while, the rain stopped outside and the night grew deep and dark. Some lightning still remained with a few thunders following but Kyungsoo’s breathe slower and his body relaxed. Joonmyeon realized the younger had fell asleep, head rested on his shoulder.

He carefully handled him, carrying him to the bed and covering him with his mint-colored sheets.

Joonmyeon observed him attentively, so delicate and beautiful as always. How much he wished he could take him in his arms, kiss him hard and let him know how much he loved him –he needed every drop of his self-control to limited himself to caress his cheek.

 “Suho?”

Joonmyeon turned to the source of the familiar voice.

“Chen?”

“It’s really you! A bit different but I must confess it suits you quite well”

“Good to see you, too” –they shared a hug, time rewards old friendships– “How are you? It’s been a while” –Chen only smiled, bitter and slow, Joonmyeon perfectly could sense the pain in his eyes– “I heard you met someone, I’m glad you decided to be happy with the one you love. Hyun…”

“Woo?” –a slight smile– “Would you like to go for something to drink?” –Joonmyeon accepted.

“Luhan told you, right? He’s the only one who could reach you after you left” –he played with his ice tea– “I left everything for him, I loved Hyunwoo and he…well, he thought he loved me as well”

Joonmyeon now faced someone who wasn’t, even the slightest part of who he used to be.

“During the first two years everything was wonderful but I guess people change and their feelings with them”

“He left you?”

“He met someone else” –he looked into his eyes– “As silly as it might sound, I still can’t say those words”

“What about meeting someone else?”

“I don’t think so, it’s like asking you to love someone else than Kyungsoo”

“It’s because of him I’m here”

Anyone, from a human’s perspective, would think an angel is fated to be free just because. The truth is, wouldn’t that angel be a slave for fate?  But then, what happens if an angel defies his fate –his nature– and falls in love? Wouldn’t he turn into a slave for love?

Suho smiled to himself.

He knew Kyungsoo would love him for life and he knew, he was completely sure, even if Kyungsoo couldn’t remember it yet, he still feels the same.

Kyungsoo woke up that morning uneasy, a trace of a very familiar name on his tongue once again –something in his head pointed to Joonmyeon’s direction.

Did he dream about Joonmyeon?

Probably, it wouldn’t be the first time it happened anyway. In fact, Joonmyeon has visited his dream a lot more than what Kyungsoo would be willing to admit even to himself, more often and even a lot more…real.

He straightened his back against the headboard and shook his head like trying to get rid of his own thoughts. The guilt would always make him to hold back.

A quarter before eight.

He cleared his mind with a sip of water before gradually drag his feet towards the bathroom.

Fat rain drops poured against the window glass and Kyungsoo couldn’t help but again remember Joonmyeon’s lips on his forehead that night. The warmth in those sweet memories drew a smile on his lips –maybe Baekhyun was right.

I think Jongin should be worried

But Jongin wasn’t even half worried because of Joonmyeon being too close to his boyfriend, his mind was busy with something else.

“Soo, where are you? We need to talk”

Kyungsoo tried to fade away the uncomfortable feeling while he listened to Jongin –Joonmyeon was observing him.

For a moment, he thought it was the closest thing to a proposal –Jongin started the talk mentioning how important he was since long time ago, how he always took care of him since middle school and also when he finally got the guts to ask him out almost a year ago.

Kyungsoo was secretly starting to formulate reasons about why they were just too young to get married or even live together.

But Jongin’s words ended up brutally clear and honest: I cheated on you.

The older would never see that coming. Jongin wasn’t the kind of guy who would cheat on him only because he was handsome and popular enough to have anyone he wanted –Jongin couldn’t even dare to lie to him.

“Soo, you don’t deserve this” –he looked serious at the moment– “I still have to figure out my feelings for Sehun but I know you don’t feel for me the same way I used to feel for you”

“Jongin, I love you-”

“I don’t’ doubt that, probably as a friend, as a younger brother, but never as your boyfriend” –he smiled, Kyungsoo then noticed how good he looked– “And I don’t blame you, maybe we weren’t meant to be. I love you, too…as a brother”

Jongin left a kiss on his head, soft and slow, he pressed his lips for short seconds before stepping away and smile sincerely –ready to turn around, his hands into his pockets and walk to the door.

“Jongin” –Kyungsoo called with a smile– “you should tell him, I know he would like to know. I knew it a while ago” –the other nodded before exit the place.

Probably it was just the fact that they could finally see stars that night –for Joonmyeon it was just because with Kyungsoo everything seemed brighter and beautiful– they enjoyed the time watching the starry sky.

The mood was soothing and bright, the night surrounded them with peace –and then, a soft kiss against his cheek.

A tender, chaste and shy kiss from his star.

Days passed, filled with Kyungsoo’s presence mostly –Joonmyeon hasn’t forgotten the agreement and he started to worry if he could make it in the next twelve days.

He secretly prayed for it. Luhan was also involved and the last thing he wanted to do is throw everything to the trash, especially Luhan’s effort to finally get him the chance to finally become human with Kyungsoo by his side.

The younger didn’t visit him that afternoon but he understood, History wasn’t Kyungsoo’s favorite subject and he probably decided to study for the test. Joonmyeon decided to bring the order to his neat apartment.

“Suho” –Kyungsoo broke the silence, the mention made Joonmyeon’s heart skip a beat– “That name, has something to do with the book? I haven’t read it yet but if it really belongs to me and that name sounds familiar…I don’t’ know, I was wondering if it has something to do with it”

“Sounds familiar?” –the younger nodded, taking a sip from his coffee.

“A lot, I woke up a few days ago with something like that in mind and I finally remember it” –remember, Joonmyeon repeated to himself– “You know what? Never mind, I would get to know when I read it, right?” – Joonmyeon only smiled.

“Baekhyun told me about Jongin”

“I’m not surprised” –laughed.

“Kyungsoo…” –the younger turned to him– “I like you”

The next day after late class was surprisingly cold outside but the younger enjoyed Joonmyeon’s warmth as he came closer.

The stars fell over the city like a beautiful dark and silky robe –fast and sly– as Kyungsoo observed Joonmyeon filled with joy and peace.

“We’ve met before, right?” –his voice was low. The older turned to him and thought twice about what to say, they have too much to lose.

“Why are you asking that so suddenly?”

“I don’t know, I feel something, it’s like if we met long time ago” –the younger smiled– “Since the first time I saw you, I never doubt of you, I feel good around you…I feel safe”

Joonmyeon caressed his face but didn’t say a word, he observed him attentively and touched his lips with his thumb.

“You know what’s funnier?” –Joonmyeon shook his head– “You never answer my questions, you know me so well but I barely know a few things about you”

“That’s very unfair” –the older smiled– “If there’s anything I could do to make t better just tell me”

Kyungsoo seemed to think about it before answer.

“I want to hear one of your stories, I really like the one from the other night”

Joonmyeon nodded, intertwined his fingers with Kyungsoo’s and shifted in his place to be comfortably closer to him before start.

“Kyungsoo…” –the younger turned to him– “I like you”

Silence took over for a short moment as they both looked to each other. Kyungsoo closed the gap between them without even trying to.

The kiss started sweet and chaste but turned deep and needed –his fingers playing through Joonmyeon’s hair and Joonmyeon’s hands carefully holding the younger’s face like fearing to let him go too soon.

Kyungsoo didn’t want to let go.

Joonmyeon’s lips were sweeter than honey –he would probably make fun of himself later for being so cheesy at the time but it was true.

They smiled after breaking the kiss.

“I like you, too, Joonmyeon”

It could have perfectly been his sweetest dream because Joonmyeon never thought the reality could be this beautiful –still they have a long way to go but one step after another, he was positive they will make it, together.

The words stayed with him during the next two days and he never stopped them from going through his mind once every few minutes.

Their relationship progressed a lot in only two days and the older shouldn’t be less than thankful because he realized Baekhyun and Chanyeol’s approve probably helped a lot. Now he has only ten days to go through that wall blocking Kyungsoo’s memory.

He fixed the younger’s bangs and smiled before opening the door to his apartment and guided him inside. Kyungsoo looked a bit nervous and Joonmyeon understood his reasons.

Nevertheless, his small and shy steps headed to the kitchen, his smile showing at the clean room –he expected nothing less from the older.

“So?” –the other turned around– “What do you think?” –Joonmyeon lifted his arms a bit.

“Better than what I thought”

“Oh come on” –Joonmyeon faked a hurt expression and stretched out his hand, Kyungsoo accepted it.

Joonmyeon guided him to the couch, offered a seat and something to drink before going back to the kitchen.

Kyungsoo scanned the place with his beautiful expressive eyes, an old diary resting on the coffee table and he knew he shouldn’t even touch it but the curiosity was too much to handle and he gave up.

He traced the cover with his fingers and his mind traveled to the book back in his own apartment, Broken Wings had a very similar brown cover.

He opened the diary and froze –an old picture in between the pages sent chills through his body: Joonmyeon was standing there, back-hugging someone that looked exactly like himself.

The picture was sepia-colored but very clear. Joonmyeon looked exactly the same and smiled bright to the camera and the other guy looked as happy as him, the picture seemed actually old but they both looked young.

That same night he found himself dressed in beige pants, white long sleeved button shirt and suspenders –passing by a fruit stand on an unknown street as he greeted the old lady in his pink apron and thanking for another two free apples.

One for you and the other for Joonmyeon –she has said.

The sun shining bright through his glasses and arriving to a brown door and meeting the postman on his way, taking the few letters addressed to him and his mate. The postman also called him by his name and Kyungsoo smiled to the warm feeling of being at home.

His smile grew bigger as Joonmyeon stepped closer to him in a black suit –handsome and charming as always.

I’m glad you’re back –he told him. Kyungsoo threw his arms (still holding the apples) around the other’s neck.

Again, it felt like the right thing to do around Joonmyeon.

He couldn’t help but feel good and safe and wonderful as those arms closed around his waist and brought him closer –his lips already anticipating the sweet touch of his lips.

I love you –he let out in a whisper, Joonmyeon smiled with that smile that could make the world’s problems disappear. Indeed, he loved him.

When Kyungsoo woke up the next morning, the taste of Joonmyeon’s lips remained in his lips.

The dreams were more revealing and detailed each time, sometimes he wondered if it could be little traces dragged from his previous life but he would shake the thought away because creating that kind of feelings wouldn’t help at trying to not make out with Joonmyeon in his dreams.

Then he remembered that old picture in Joonmyeon’s book the other night.

It brought chills down his spine. He had created theories to explain it to himself, like Photoshop, which was very common these days.

Do you think angels can fall in love, Soo? –the question crossed his mind all of sudden.

He didn’t get to see Joonmyeon until two days after due to his busy school schedule.

They enjoyed a nice morning in the park, having small conversations and a lot of questions from Kyungsoo, but Joonmyeon didn’t mind it. He would answer all of his questions as long as it didn’t put them in risk.

“Babe, I have to go now, my shift starts earlier today” –the younger pouted– “But you can always come visit me whenever you like”

“I like that” –Kyungsoo smiled and held his breath for a second– “Can I ask you one more question?” –he let out slowly.

Joonmyeon smiled and nodded.

“Where do you come from? And please, don’t say England. You’re cute but I know that’s not the whole true”

The older looked at him with pleading eyes, trying to come up with something to say without having to lie. He couldn’t figure it out on time.

He got closer to Kyungsoo and slowly kissed the top of his head, smiling right before his eyes and fixing the younger’s hair.

“That’s a secret” –it was almost a whisper without even trying it.

Joonmyeon smiled once again, making Kyungsoo promise to visit him later at the cafe. Something was telling him the other wouldn’t stop there and maybe that was the best chance he had.

The first time Kyungsoo saw Luhan he thought it was a dream.

He had never seen someone so beautiful and delicate in his life. If Joonmyeon’s skin amazed him with his milky-white color, he would dare to say Luhan’s skin shone even under the dim light seeping through the fabric of the curtains. But even if he was fast enough to turn on the light less than a meter away, the figure has vanished in the thin air.

Back then, he thought it was just another of his realistic dreams.

The second time he met those caring eyes he also felt his unnatural presence. Kyungsoo had probably thought it was again a dream if he hadn’t seen Luhan expression to a single question –Who are you?– and then he vanished again in a blink of an eye, without even answering the question.

However, even if Kyungsoo was sure whoever he saw wasn’t human, he wasn’t afraid of him. He only wanted to know who that being is and why he has visited him.

He told Joonmyeon everything, not caring if the older would laugh of his childish but faithful words –but unlike he has expected, if Joonmyeon thought about it as a foolish statement then he didn’t say it. He even listened to him carefully with a soft smile and his loving eyes.

Kyungsoo didn’t know it took every drop of self-control to hold back his feelings and to not show any different expression.

Joonmyeon didn’t know why Luhan has been visiting Kyungsoo, risking so much in the process, he just hoped his reasons had nothing to do with his normal duties as angel –one that usually accompanies death.

But that uncomfortable feeling was soon being replaced by Kyungsoo’s sweetness over his lips.

Only a week left for the breaking-point of the agreement Joonmyeon finally had the chance to talk to Luhan again.

His worries lessened as Luhan explained to him he has been visiting Kyungsoo’s room only to get a closer look of him, he never thought the younger would see him because that only meant one single thing: Kyungsoo was finally starting to remember. Little by little and without even knowing it, but he was remembering his previous life.

It brought light to Joonmyeon’s eyes and warmth to his heart.

Luhan smiled, too –he was just happy his old friend will finally have a chance to live.

He even envied him a little.

He had heard love is like human’s wings: it makes them fly with their feet still on the ground. A small part of him wanted to know how it felt to feel like that –to have someone special who cares about him and to care about that special someone.

Five days.

Kyungsoo had to travel back to his parents’ house for five long days due to a whole family reunion.

Surprisingly, the younger had asked him to go together, but Joonmyeon hurtfully had to reject the invitation. Kyungsoo promised he would be back soon –only two days before the agreement reaches its end.

Luhan visited him again just to know how was everything going and Joonmyeon appreciated his friends’ interest and unconditional support.

He got to see Kyungsoo again until the very twenty-ninth day.

The younger seemed a lot more decided and brave than ever –as soon as Joonmyeon opened the door, the younger threw himself to his arms.

And they kissed.

The kissed hard and needy because that was exactly how the felt at the moment. Kyungsoo guided Joonmyeon to the couch and he closed the gap between them again –fingers roaming through the other’s blond hair.

He broke the kiss slowly only to speak very decisive words.

“I need to know the truth, Joonmyeon” –he started, intertwining his finger with the latter’s– “I’ll believe what you say, I promise”

“What are you-”

“I saw that old picture in your notebook” –he stated– “As crazy as it sounds, I know it’s us” –he took a deep breath– “Joon, who are you? Please tell me the truth because since I met you my whole world has changed. I see you even in my dreams, I see us in there, having a life together and living happily in a place I can’t remember and a time I can tell it’s not now”

The younger looked into Joonmyeon’s eyes.

“I believe those are not only dreams, they’re too real to be merely empty dreams” –now he held Joonmyeon’s hands tightly in his own– “I know you’re hiding something Joon, but please don’t, I love you and I trust you…and your words”

A small silence flooded the room.

Joonmyeon fought the urge to tell him everything. He breathed in and sighed –trying to not only fill his lungs with pure air but also trying to fill himself with the enough courage and his throat with the right words to finally speak.

He knew he couldn’t tell Kyungsoo the whole truth –nothing about the younger’s previous life.

“Do you think angels can fall in love, Soo?” –he asked once again.

Kyungsoo opened his mouth to answer but Joonmyeon gave him no chance.

“I used to be one” –Joonmyeon’s eyes were fixed on him, honestly reading all over them– “that until I fell in love with a human long time ago. He became my everything, so I decided to leave my life as a guardian to be with him” –his eyes became teary– “Unfortunately, every decision we make in life has its consequences and he had to pay for mine”

“That person…the picture” –Kyungsoo had no answer from Joonmyeon, but he didn’t need it anyway– “it was me. I was that person you were in love with! What happened?”

“I can’t tell you that, I’m sorry”

“What are you talking about? You can’t tell me?”

“That’s” –he paused– “something I can’t do”

Kyungsoo waited for change of mind from the older but it didn’t happen –he left the place without a word but feeling hurt.

That night Kyungsoo saw Luhan again.

This time, the latter wasn’t standing in the room as always. This time he was seated on the edge of the bed, looking at him with a soothing expression and Kyungsoo knew –he felt– this time was going to be different from the previous ones but he waited in silence –not wanting to screw everything up this time.

“Joonmyeon” –Luhan now looked into his eyes, Kyungsoo straightened his back against the headboard– “He used to be an angel, long time ago he met someone and fell in love with him” –he paused– “That someone was you”

Kyungsoo listened carefully, he needed to hear this, his questions can wait.

“As angels, we are not supposed to love in a human way and he knew that, so he decided to leave everything behind for you. You two were truly happy back then, your love was pure and strong but sadly the archangels couldn’t accept that”

“What’s your name?” –the question hurried trough Kyungsoo’s throat.

“Luhan” –the angel patiently answered.

“Luhan” –the human got a bit closer, still half covered by his sheets– “Please, I need you to tell me what happened, I need to know”

The other held Kyungsoo’s hand.

“They punished both of you, Joonmyeon mostly, by sending your soul was condemned to wander in time and space until you could see the light again in another body, as another person, one that couldn’t remember neither his previous life nor the person he loved. That way they forced Joonmyeon to stay over a hundred years alone, just waiting and looking for you because that’s how much he loves you”

Kyungsoo remained silent for a moment –tears rolling down his cheeks.

“Why is it he couldn’t tell me the truth?”

“Because that would put you in danger again, it will break the agreement with the archangels and that would ruin the chance for him to became human to be with you for the rest of your lives”

Kyungsoo cried harder this time, Luhan got closer and hugged him, whispering soothing things into his ears until the human fell asleep.

The next day Kyungsoo woke up with Joonmyeon in mind and headed to his home around 2PM.

I’m really sorry, Joon –was the first thing he managed to say in front of the older before melting in his embrace.

They cuddled on the couch for probably long hours, only sharing some smiles and chaste kisses. Kyungsoo then asked for some stories and Joonmyeon obeyed until their bodies asked for something to eat and Kyungsoo practically jumped into the kitchen and started to cook something for them.

They laughed and joked until the sun disappeared in the horizon and the older remembered then: there was no time left, that was the thirtieth day.

Luhan told me everything –Kyungsoo said, Joonmyeon only brought him closer.

The kiss started slowly but passionate, soon growing in intensity and dedication.

Joonmyeon placed Kyungsoo on the mattress, his lips brushing over and over again against his warm neck. Kyungsoo’s hands explored Joonmyeon’s torso under his shirt and moved his fingers along the now exposed skin.

That night they shared a bed and a feeling: the feeling of being loved by the one you love. That night they made love and Kyungsoo discovered under his fingers two scars on Joonmyeon’s back.

Joonmyeon, as any other exiled angel, owned those particular scars for a reason: his wings were both broken and torn away from their place.

The words crossed his mind like a flash but the things the older was making him feel were all what he could think about at the moment.

Joonmyeon woke up to a peacefully dark room.

Kyungsoo’s head laid on his bare chest, soft sounds coming from him.

With a slow motion he turned to see the alarm clock on his bed-side table: 1:43AM. He breathed in and sighed in defeat.

“Hey” –Kyungsoo whispered– “I missed you”

Joonmyeon smiled and got closer to leave a kiss on his lips.

“I’m sorry for making you wait for so long, Suho” –Kyungsoo smiled at him– “I think now I know how Broken Wings ends”

Joonmyeon caressed the younger’s face as he listened.

“I remember how it ends”
