Phone Calls

Let me just take a moment to tell you guys how much I appreciate the overwhelming response this fic got from you. From the comments, to the upvotes, to the unexpectedly high number of subscribers - thank you guys. I hope this part doesn't disappoint because honestly, upto now, I still don't know where I'm going with this. But let's find out together, yeah?

Enjoy!

A soft push from the person beside her had her eyes fluttering open in an instant. She looked around and found everyone in her class looking at her. She gulped. That wasn’t a good sign especially since the professor had a stern expression.

“Ms. Hwang, I understand that it is after lunch and you might be feeling sleepy after stuffing yourself with cafeteria food, but I would suggest that you don’t snooze in my class if you don’t want to take this subject again next semester.” The old man looked at the rest of the class. “That goes to all of you. Am I making myself clear?”

“Yes, Sir.”

“Ms. Hwang,” his eyes shifted back to her. “I will let you off with a warning since you’re one of my top students. But this should be the first and last time. Do you understand?

She nodded timidly and hung her head low. For the rest of the one and a half hour class, she tried her best to keep her eyes open although her mind couldn’t really grasp anything from the lesson. She made a mental note to ask her seatmate for a copy of her notes.

The professor dismissed the class late and she wanted nothing than to run out of school right after but she was asked to stay back as she listened to another round of scolding from the old man before she was told to go. Her phone vibrated inside her pocket just as she was about to step inside the bus that would take her home. She pulled out the device and laughed as she read the message.

She quickly took a seat before dialing a number and pressing the phone against her ear.

“I’m blaming you,” said the voice from the other line.

She laughed louder, ignoring the stares she got. “What did your professor say?”

“He said the next time I plan to sleep in his class, I should bring napkins so I wouldn’t drool on my exam papers.”

“You drooled on your exam paper?!” She shouted, earning glares this time for being too loud. She quickly covered with her hand and tried to muffle her laughter.

“It’s your fault!”

“Hey, hey. You talk as if you’re the only one who got scolded. I fell asleep in class too! It was so embarrassing I could die!”

“Your day isn’t as bad as mine, I bet.”

“Go on, tell me about your day then.”

Tiffany listened as Taeyeon told her that not only did she sleep in class, but she was also late for a couple of them. All she could do was bow her head down in shame as she listened to her professors’ impromptu speech on the importance of sleeping early and giving your mind hours of rest.

She also told Tiffany how she almost tripped and fell during gym class because of a stupid towel someone left on the floor before actually tripping and falling down because of her untied shoelaces. She had to bear at least fifteen minutes of being laughed at by her whole class while waiting for someone from the clinic to come get her with a wheel chair.

“Useless classmates,” she barely heard Taeyeon say, making her chuckle as she made her way out of the bus.

Taeyeon then told her that once the nurse released her, she had already missed two classes – one of which had a special exam for those who needed a passing grade badly – namely, her.

As Tiffany continued to listen, she couldn’t help but think that she was listening to some klutz’ normal day at school. Taeyeon almost went in a different house! That was really something.

“Wow. Your day was really… wow,” she commented when Taeyeon finally finished telling her about her day.

“See? So your day’s the best day ever compared to mine.”

“I’d have to agree with you on that one, but look on the bright side…”

“There’s actually a bright side to this? I don’t see anything good about running away from your neighbor because they thought you were a burglar trying to get inside their house while one of your ankle’s swollen.”

Tiffany laughed as the image of a limping, but still trying to run, Taeyeon flashed inside her mind. “Well that is quite unfortunate but yes, there is a bright side to it.”

“What is it then?”

“Your days aren’t as boring as before.” She smiled, although she knew Taeyeon wouldn’t see her.

Taeyeon sighed. “Well, I guess that’s one way of looking at it.”

“Besides, remember the first time we talked? It was a bad day for me too, but if all of that didn’t happen, I wouldn’t have met you.”

The two had been talking on the phone regularly in the afternoon or at night for the past month and they had gotten closer to the point that Tiffany no longer needed to confide in her ditcher of a best friend because she had Taeyeon.

And Taeyeon was more than enough.

They ended up sleeping past midnight – after Taeyeon’s mother’s nonstop rapping on the girl’s door, telling her to sleep. Tiffany lacked sleep the next day but she didn’t fall asleep in class. Instead, she had to skip the whole lecture because she arrived with only fifteen minutes left for the subject – with no make-up on, hair all over her face and sweat running down her cheeks. She had to hide from her professor  – and basically anyone from that class – the whole day.

Despite all that, a big smile was still plastered on her face. Last night’s phone conversation was the longest they’ve had and although they talked about the most random things – like always – she was happy to know Taeyeon more. Now that they’ve been friends for a month, she couldn’t help but wonder how the girl looked like.

Was she cute? Well, her voice was cute, so maybe she was.

She giggled to herself but stopped she caught her best friend’s frown.  She coughed to hide her embarrassment and pretended to go back to reading.

“You’re weird.”

She looked up when her best friend spoke.

“One second you’re staring at nothing with a straight face then the next, you’re laughing. What’s gotten into you?”

“N-nothing.” Her phone suddenly vibrated inside her pocket and she quickly took it out but her face fell in disappointment when it wasn’t what she was expecting.

“And why do you keep looking at your phone? Are you expecting a call or a message from someone?”

She quickly shook her head. “No.”

Her best friend’s eyes narrowed and she fidgeted in her seat. She wasn’t prepared to tell her about the stranger – not so much a stranger now – she was talking to everyday over the phone. She wasn’t sure how she was going to tell her best friend that she randomly dialed a number and befriended a complete stranger when she ditched her that day a month ago.

She wasn’t sure how she was going to tell her all that without being judged.

Growing nervous under the intense stare, she sighed in relief when she found her escape. Her phone vibrated wildly and she had to pick it up before the mean librarian scolded them.

She read the message and smiled wildly, completely forgetting about the other person she was with.

“Who’s Taeyeon?”

She jumped in surprise when she felt her best friend’s breath just beside her ear. She turned her head and saw her the other girl looking at her with an eyebrow raised.

“I don’t think I know anyone named Taeyeon. Who’s… she? He?”

“She.”

The other girl nodded. “She. Who’s she?”

“A friend.”

“Friend? Where’d you meet her?”

“Somewhere.”

“And where’s that somewhere?”

“Just… Korea.” Which is true. “Look, I don’t know why you keep asking me who Taeyeon is, but she’s just my friend and–”

“Are you sure? Because that big smile on your face tells me otherwise.”

Tiffany quickly wiped the smile off her face. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.” She stood up and started packing her things. “I just remembered that I needed to uh… ask Mr. Lee something. I’ll see you later.”

Her best friend laughed and shook her head as she watched Tiffany scramble out of the library.
