Tiptoeing
Shacking UpIf anyone else knew that we’d just started dating, they might have zoned in on the fact that we barely wandered beyond arm’s reach of one another after leaving the plane. He was always within sight of me and most of the time we remained close enough to hear what the other was saying. I couldn’t bear the thought of not knowing where he was and what he was doing and I was thankful that feeling seemed to be mutual. The sun was still out when we arrived in late afternoon and we had nothing scheduled until the following day, unless they wanted us to eat dinner together which wasn’t abnormal. Seoul was freezing cold when we left, but Hong Kong was much warmer. It felt like summer to us, so Kyuhyun removed his jacket and slung it over his arm. I just ped my jacket and dug out my sunglasses from my bag as we waited for our ride.
They put all of the members into one van, but it was so large, Kyuhyun and I managed to get the back seat for ourselves. Kyuhyun grabbed my backpack from me and set it down next to his on the floor. Then he motioned for me to scoot closer to him. We had a whole empty seat between us and although it sounded safer to stay where I was, Kyuhyun and I always did sit close to one another under these circumstances. So, I moved over and sat next to him.
“Are you tired? Do you want to lie down?” he offered.
That was so tempting. I was so excited the night before, even when I fell asleep I woke frequently. I wasn’t exactly kidding when I said that Kyuhyun was hot before, I meant it in more than one way. He was more than enough to warm someone up even on the coldest night. I actually woke sweating at one point and had to pull away from him a little.
I took him up on his offer and lay down in the seat, resting my head on his lap. Kyuhyun loosely wrapped one arm around me, holding me tight whenever the driver would brake so that I didn’t end up on the floor, and played with my hair with the other. It wasn’t the easiest to sleep, being jostled and touched by him, but exhaustion won over and I gradually crashed. I don’t know how long we rode in the car. Kyuhyun didn’t wake me until the car stopped and I followed after him in a daze, still not completely awake. He slowed his normal pace to stay with me, smiling in amusement at my sleepiness.
The manager checked us in and we huddled in a corner waiting for him to lead us up to our rooms. Once he had our keys, we squished into the elevator and headed up the floor we were staying on. Once up there, we headed down the east wing of the hotel and the manager finally stopped us to hand out our keys and pair us together.
“Can I room with Ryeowook hyung today?” Henry asked, eager to spend more time with me after chatting with me before we boarded the plane. I should have felt flattered that he would speak up to ask for a different room assignment just to hang out with me more, but I clearly wanted to be with Kyuhyun at that moment. I began to panic, wondering what excuse I could use to opt out of it without hurting Henry’s feelings. I was about to open my mouth, still not sure what was going to come out of it, when the manager beat me to it.
“Hell no! You’re rooming with Zhou Mi,” he informed the maknae.
“Why not?” he asked, not beyond whining still at his young age. “He always rooms with Kyuhyun hyung!”
“That’s because he’s Kyu’s sitter—he only remotely behaves himself when Ryeowook sleeps in the same room—so although I’m sure you’d enjoy it, I wouldn’t,” he concluded, handing Kyuhyun both of our keys, since I must have still appeared rather out of it. In reality, I was waking up, but I was in shock that we were already such a cut and dry duo. Kyuhyun had been right, after all. The managers themselves had no motivation to separate us. Kyuhyun grabbed hold of my arm and walked me over to our room.
“What did I tell you?”
“I didn’t actually believe you.”
“I know,” he said, opening the door and holding it for me. “The reason you didn’t believe me is because I didn’t tell you about the last time they ed me out for misbehaving. Manager hyung sat me down and asked me what it would take to get my complete compliance during our road trips and I told him that I could only stand to room with you and would behave much better if we stayed together. So, having accomplished what I set out to do from the beginning, I turned into the perfect angel since then,” he explained, setting his suitcase down on the bed before heading back to the door and hanging up his coat. He also grabbed mine from me and did the same.
“I wondered why you suddenly became so agreeable,” I admitted, remembering that Kyuhyun quit giving the managers a hard time finally, but failing to connect that I would have anything to do with it.
I set my luggage down on the other bed, but before I could it and begin unpacking, Kyuhyun moved it over to the bed with his luggage. “We’ll be sharing, so we can just leave them on one bed, right?”
I was so surprised, having not thought about sharing a bed again—just a room—that I blushed and tried to hide it by nodding and hanging my head low, pretending to concentrate on rummaging through my bag. Kyuhyun saw right through my bashful behavior though.
“Ryeowook.”
“Hmm?”
“Ryeowook, look at me,” Kyuhyun said, grasping my arm and turning me toward him.
I looked up at him, knowing he would not quit until I complied.
“If you’re not okay with that, we can sleep in separate beds. I forgot that sharing a bed was forced on us yesterday and that it wasn’t a choice,” he said, cupping my face and bending down to kiss me fleetingly.
“Trust me, it wasn’t forced on me. If I didn’t want to share a bed with you, I would have slept on the floor or the couch,” I informed him. “I was eager to be so close to you. I was praising my good fortune!”
“So, you liked me too?” he asked, since I hadn’t gone into any great detail about that yet. “I mean, I can only assume that since you technically made the first move.”
I was too embarrassed to look at him as I spoke, so I turned to gather my toiletries from my suitcase. “Kyuhyun…I’ve liked you since shortly after you joined our group.”
“That long?” he asked, stunned.
I sighed, giving up on gathering my personal items and sat down on the bed, hiding my face in my hands. “Yes, from almost the very first day.”
Kyuhyun crouched down in front of me and grabbed onto my hands, drawing them away from my face. “But you never said anything. And you dated a bunch of women.”
“I know,” I said, still unable to meet his inquisitive eyes. “I’ve done everything wrong from the very beginning, it’s a wonder we’re even together now.”
“All this time I assumed you were straight and was angry at myself for not getting over you,” Kyuhyun said to himself, lost in thought.
“How long have you liked me?”
“About a year,” he said, looking back at me and this time I did not shy away and avert my eyes. “At least, that’s how long it’s been since I realized I had interest in you beyond friendship. I think I liked you a lot longer without realizing it wasn’t normal. When I started to get jealous of other people touching you or spending time with you, I figured it out.”
“You’ve been doing that longer than one year,” I teased, smiling at him in amusement.
He shrugged and leaned forward, kissing me again. “A year, give or take,” he amended, with
