Letters [Part 5]
The SpeakeasyMonday, January 17, 1927
Dear Himchan,
I apologize for sending this so late but Happy New Year! Things have been really hectic on our end with some problems with the ship and really bad weather. Its taken longer than usual to send out letters and receive them.
Unfortunately one of my fellow seamen fell overboard the ship a few days ago. It was storming really bad and he was trying to secure something on the deck. I guess he wasn’t watching where he was going because a wave hit the ship pretty hard and the force knocked him over the railing. A lookout saw it happen but there was nothing anyone could do…
I can recall a few occasions I talked with the man and from my encounters with him, he was nice. His real name was Clarence but he insisted everyone call him Bubba. He was a big guy from Mississippi; A southern man born and raised. That nickname was something his family gave him and he considered us all family… all of us. That’s kind of rare for someone that’s brought up in the south but I guess his family raised him well. I never really thought I’d be bothered by losing a fellow seaman but I am. The reason is because I was ordered to go on that deck that night to secure something but my Captain ran into me before I could make it up to the deck. He said he needed me to help him with something else and had Bubba go in my place since he was stronger.
That could have been me Himchan… I could have been the one to go overboard and it just makes me realize how lucky I got. I feel slightly guilty for what happened to Bubba, I feel like it’s my fault. I was hoping this new year would start off swell but after what happened a few days ago I’m not feeling so happy anymore. I wish I was with you. I need some comfort right now but I guess all I can do is hug my pillow and imagine it’s you. This letter might not have been what you’re expecting but I felt the need to tell you. I miss you Himchan, and I promise you I’ll stay safe. I’ll write soon.
