“There is something else you should know,” the doctor stopped Baekhyun before he could leave the room. Baekhyun gave him a confused look and took a seat on the bed again. The doctor continued. “I was looking over Victoria's chart a moment ago, and there was something unusual.”

Baekhyun nodded slowly, waiting for him to continue. “You see, the reason a transformation is so painful is because human DNA consists of forty-six chromosomes, while ours consist of one hundred and four. The venom takes a sample of the carriers DNA into the infected body and duplicates the necessary chromosomes until the bodies DNA matches what is needed. It's so painful because every cell in the body is being ripped apart, destroyed, and replaced at a rapid pace.”

“Yeah I knew that,” Baekhyun nodded, recalling the information from the homeschooling he and his sibling had gone through as children. “What does this have to do with Victoria?”

“I'm getting to that,” the doctor nodded. “The problem is Victoria does not have forty-six chromosomes. When we had taken her blood after the rogue attack, we tested it as per procedure, and I received the results this morning. I had intended on informing you both and your family this eventing, but given the circumstances, I think it would be best for this to stay between you and I.”

His head was spinning, and Baekhyun was glad he had taken a seat. “She… She wasn't human? That can't be right. She smells like… she…” Baekhyun looked up at the doctor who was wringing his hands together. “What is she?”

“Well, she previously had ninety-six chromosomes, which would leave us to believe vampire or dragon, but she would have shown signs long ago if she was either.” Shaking his head, the doctor frowned. “At this point, I do not know, and I do not know how the venom will effect her. I wish I could give you more, but unfortunately-”

“Would her parents know?” Baekhyun interrupted him. “They would be the same thing, right? They would know what they are.”

The doctor nodded. “I would assume so, yes.” Nodding his head, Baekhyun stood to his feet. “Except they are hunters, are they not?” The doctor continued. “Reese and Maggie definitely were, so I would assume her parents are as well. They might think she is human, like them.”

Running his hands through his hair, Baekhyun growled. “Why is this always so complicated?!” He shouted. Marching past the doctor, Baekhyun brought his foot back and slammed it into the wall creating a large hole in the sheetrock.

While Baekhyun through his tantrum, the doctor watched and shook his head. “I will leave it up to you on who to tell of this and what to do,” he said. “If you plan to go after her parents, I would suggest informing Alpha James or your father.”

Without another word, the doctor left the room, leaving Baekhyun alone. Pulling his foot from the wall, Baekhyun began pacing the room. He knew he should tell his family about her, inform them in case something happened, but if he did that they would insist on following him, and he couldn't have them getting hurt. Part of him didn't want to tell Alpha James either.

Growling under his breath, Baekhyun stormed out of the hospital and towards the pack house. Most of the people he passed didn't bother to glance at him, and those who did merely waved or smiled. Baekhyun nodded back, but did nothing more. He was in a hurry. If he was going to do this, he needed to work quickly. Any minute now someone would come looking for him, tell him he had to be with Victoria, that she needed him.

Right now, neither he or his wolf could stand the thought of her. He knew it wasn't her fault; she clearly believed she was human just as he did. But there was this horrible feeling digging into his chest that maybe, just maybe, she's known the whole time.

Bursting through the door to the pack house, Baekhyun rushed up the stairs. If he was lucky, he could catch Alpha James before he left. As it would have it, he was.

While Baekhyun turned the corner, Alpha James was closing a door. The man glanced at him confused. “Shouldn't you be with your mate? I know it's a tough choice, but I’m sure you'll make the right one.”

“Alpha, can I have a word with you before you go? Just really quick?” Baekhyun rushed out the words. He had always felt small standing with the man. He was taller than Chanyeol and broad. A large man with white blonde hair and a 5 o'clock shadow almost constantly.

The man smiled and nodded. “Of course!” He said and turned around, opening the same door he just closed. “What's on your mind?”

Baekhyun had always heard stories of Alpha's from some other packs. Ruthless rulers who tortured, , and killed the members who didn't bend to their will. As a child, he didn't believe the stories. How could he, when his Alpha was so kind and giving to his pact. As long as he had been here, he had never seen Alpha James lose his temper or mistreat someone. The Night Sun pack was lucky to have him, and the King knew it. His kindness was what got him a spot on the council after all.

“It's about Victoria,” Baekhyun began. After following Alpha James into the room, the door was shut and Baekhyun began pacing again. “Doc said that she was never human, and on top of that he doesn't know what she is.”

Alpha James nodded along slowly. “I see, and you want to know what she was?”

“Well, of course! It's important!” Baekhyun shouted, then covered his mouth quickly when he remembered who he spoke to.

The Alpha only smiled. “Why?”

Baekhyun stopped his pacing and looked at the larger man confused. “What do you mean 'why?’”

Sitting on top of the desk, the Alpha crossed his ankles and grinned. “Why does it matter what she was? She'll be a wolf now, isn't that what you wanted? Someone like you?” where Baekhyun just stared angrily at him, Alpha James continued. “I understand wanting to know for her health and safety, but I do not feel like that is why you are looking. Why are you looking, Baekhyun?”

He thought about it for a moment. His wolf was still beating against his chest, demanding answers, but Baekhyun just felt even more confused. He just wanted to know the truth. “I need to know what to expect,” he said slowly, meeting eyes with his alpha. “I just need to know what I'm dealing with here.”

Alpha James nodded. “You're dealing with your mate. It can be hard sometimes, but you shouldn't leave her in the dark at a time like this. She will be going through a lot of changes she won't understand.” The Alpha watch as Baekhyun shook his head and turned away. He rolled his eyes. “But if you insist on investigating, I would recommend taking someone with you. She is protected by hunters, and hunters cannot be trusted.”

Speaking with the Alpha didn't make Baekhyun feel better. If anything, he felt even more conflicted. Even as a Beta, he was not strong enough to take on hunters alone. Hunters were known to take down entire packs when they felt like. The only thing keeping them safe were the Accords the King and governments had signed to keep peace. If things got out of hand, Baekhyun did not put it past the hunters to break them.

Even more frustrated than before, Baekhyun continued his march through the pact house. He peeked around corners carefully, trying to avoid his father or brothers, until he found the door he was looking for and knocked. A few seconds passed before a similarly large blonde opened the door. Kris glared down at him with crossed arms. “Shouldn’t you be-”

“With my mate? Probably, but I have a favor to ask,” Baekhyun interrupted him. Although Andrew was first in line for beta, it was Baekhyun and Chanyeol that had always been closer to Kris, and Andrew to his older sisters. “I need you to come with me to her parents and interrogate them with me.”
