Element 2: Loss

I Have to Win

I sat with widened eyes as our maknae fought in his first real match since joining our team. Dongwoon never managed to get much action, since Doojoon and I would always take out the first two opponents, making his fight invaluable.

Although Dongwoon and I were on the same team, I couldn’t help but watch his opponent, a doe-eyed boy with burning red hair, known simply as Prince Jang. Truly, he was an interesting character, with a fiery dance that matched his beautiful scarlet locks. I shook myself out of it and began cheering for Dongwoon.

Dongwoon was barely hanging on against this guy. Everything he threw at the prince was backfiring. Dongwoon, hovered above Prince Jang’s reach, trying to catch his breath and think of a plan. Unfortunately, the doe-eyed boy wasn’t restricted to the ground. He engulfed his feet in fire and with a powerful leap his altitude matched that of Dongwoon.

Prince Jang did a graceful flip in the air and with a powerful kick to the back of the head Nam Shin was sent careening to the ground and knocked unconscious. My eyes widened when Prince Jang landed and smirked. Our eyes connected for half a second before he stepped out of the arena and went to meet his young captain.

I snapped out of my daze and ran into the arena to help collect our maknae. I couldn’t believe what had happened. Even the crowd was in a state of shock and unrest. Our team, Black Eclipse, lost.

The next day was absolute hell. Doojoon didn’t take too kindly to the news of our loss. Fortunately, he wasn’t blaming Dongwoon. The kid was having a hard enough time blaming himself, when we dropped him off at school this morning. I held my head, listening to Doojoon’s angry complaints.

“That stupid, lousy little brat! What the hell did he do to me?! Why couldn’t I attack him?!”

“Doojoon. Calm down. It’s just one loss. We can recover in no time.”

“It’s not about losing. It’s about losing to him! I in froze! I froze up! That boy must’ve used some stupid power on me!” Doojoon laid his head on the desk as Ms. Choi began passing papers out to everyone.

“Alright. I’ll just leave you all to work on these quizzes while I grade your homework.” She stepped in front of me and Doojoon and placed a hand on our leader’s shoulder before whispering. “Take it easy, you two. I’m sure you can recover.”

I nodded smiling. Maybe G.Na’s not so bad after all.

It was that awkward hour between classes. Doojoon and I usually waste it playing video games at his apartment or training in the tunnels under the park, but today, I felt a little hungry.

“Hey, Doojoon. How about we hit the cafe near campus. I hear they have a delicious turkey sandwich.”

“No thanks, Jun. I just need time to think.”

“Suit yourself.” I left Doojoon alone in the classroom and headed toward the Red-Lion café, a common spot for normal college students to take their lunch. I walked, noticing the welcoming decor. Comfortable couches were along the wall while circular tables were scattered on the main floor. There were also bookshelves along the walls and computer screens built into some of the tables near the corner. I sighed, seeing how crowded the cafe was and went to order my food.

After about 10 minutes, I got my sandwich and large coke, and decided to look for a table. Most of the tables were filled to capacity with happy, chattering college students but out of the corner of my eye I managed to catch a glimpse of a free seat across from a familiar looking boy.

I sat down. “Is this spot taken?”

The crimson-haired college boy looked up from his book and unplugged his earphones. “Huh?”

“Can I sit here?”

“Oh. Sure.”

I sat down across from him and smiled, taking a bite of my sandwich.

“You look familiar.” He spoke up.

I raised my eyebrow and smirked. “Don’t tell me you don’t remember last night.” He tilted his head to the side. “The elemental fights? I was on Black Eclipse. I fought first against AJ.”

“Oh yeah. You're the one that Beat up Kiki.”

“His name is Kiki?”

“Kikwang. Lee Kikwang. He was kinda mad about losing.”

“Yeah. I hear that a lot.” I chuckled before taking a sip of my coke. “So what’s a fighter like you doing here?”

“Um. Well it’s close to campus and I don’t like spending lunch at the dorms.”

“You go to school around here?”

“University of Mid-Seoul.”

“No way! Me too.” I chuckled again. It was kind of rare meeting an elemental fighter at the same school. With the exception of G.Na, most elementals on campus preferred avoiding these types of competitions for one reason or another. “Are you the only one on your team, here?”

The prince shook his head. “Both Kiki and Seobie are here too. I’m in a dorm with Yoseob. He kind of a wild sleeper. I’m glad we don’t share a bed or he’d hit me.”

“Yoseob? Is that your leader?”

“Yang Yoseob. That’s him. He’s cute and usually nice but he’s kinda dangerous. He works really hard in school and in the fights. Hmm, I wonder what his grades are.”

I stared at the doe-eyed boy for several minutes as he seemed to drift off into thought.

“Hello.” I waved my hand in front of his face. “Earth to Prince Jang.”

“Prince who?” The boy looked at me before snapping back to his senses.

“Prince Jang? Isn’t that your nom de guerre?”

“Oh right. That was the one we decided on. Sorry I wasn’t thinking.”

He smiled and I couldn’t help but smile back. This guy is so spacey, I thought.

“By the way, on the surface, I’m not a prince. My name is Jang Hyunseung.” He extended his hand. “Nice to meet you...um...”

“Yong Junhyung.” I took his soft, beautiful hand in mine. “Nice to meet you, Hyunseung-ssi.”

[Doojoon’s POV]

I lifted my head off the cold desk as students began to pile in. I leaned back in my chair awaiting Junhyung.

“Hey there Doojoon.”

I sat up and turned my head to my old friend, Yonghwa. “Hey, Yonghwa...” I spoke solemnly.

“Hey buddy, what’s up? You seem really depressed.” He sat behind me, a look of concern on his face.

“None of your business.” I turned away and gazed out the window. It wasn’t long before Junhyung strolled in with a goofy grin on his face. He sat beside me, laying his head on the table.

“Ok, Jun. Why are you suddenly so cheery?” I asked.

His smile instantly faded as he looked away. “Nothing. No reason.”

“Don’t lie to me Jun. Something happened during lunch, didn’t it.”

“Um...well um...”

“Jun?” I raised my eyebrow in suspicion and he sighed.

“Let’s just say, I met someone interesting.”

I chuckled a bit. “Was it a girl?”

“No!” He looked away. “Geez, why is it that anytime I say I met someone interesting, you automatically assume I made a new girlfriend?”

“Because you never had a girlfriend before Jun. I’m just waiting for my cute little dongsaeng to finally become a man.”

“I am a man, Damnit.” He clicked his teeth before leaning back in his chair. “Besides, what’s your excuse? You’re older than I am, Mr. Never-talk-to-a-girl-except-G.Na.”

“It’s Ms. Choi, Jun. She’s a family friend. And I’m just waiting for Ms. Right. No girl I’ve met has ever appealed to me, you know.”

“Fair enough,” Jun said, balancing his mechanical pencil under his nose

“Back to the topic at hand,” I sat up looking at my purple-haired friend. “Who did you meet?”

He looked around in all directions before whispering in my ear. “An elemental fighter.”

“What? On this campus?”

He nodded and kept his tone low. “He’s actually a member of Aegyo Storm. The one who beat Dongwoon. His name’s Hyunseung.

“What?!” I stood up.

“Calm down, Doojoon.”

I sat back down in my seat, ignoring the various stares directed at me from the rest on the class. I sighed heavily and turned to Junhyung. “You can’t be serious. You had lunch with the enemy?”

“He’s not so bad. He’s pretty interesting, albeit a little 4D. And he’s not the only one here. He told me everyone on his team is a Mid-Seoul University student. Even their captain.”

“YangYo is here?!” I yelled in anger.

“Volume, Doojoon.”

“Where is he?! I have to find him!”

“I don’t know. Hyunseung didn’t tell me. He just said Yoseob studies a lot.”

“Yoseob? Do you mean Yang Yoseob?” Both Me and Junhyung turned our gaze toward our eavesdropping friend.”

“What do you know about him, Yonghwa?” I asked.

“He’s in my biology class, Thursday mornings. He’s kind of quiet and works really hard, getting straight A’s. I think it’s because he’s always in the library. Heck, I bet anything he’s in there now.

That was just the information I was looking for. Without warning, I took off heading for the library. I faintly heard the sounds of Junhyung, yelling for me to return but I ignored him. There was one thing on my mind. I had to find out what YangYo did to me in the ring. I wasn’t about to let that boy get away with it.
