Element 4: Rematch

I Have to Win

[Hyunseung POV]

Friday. I like Friday. I have no classes so I usually just hang around the dorm room. I try to clean what I can but usually, I just laze around and watch internet videos. Aegyo Storm has a match tonight against C-Clown, but I’m not too worried.

For some reason, I couldn’t get my mind off that guy from the cafeteria. Sure he was from a rival team, but something about him fascinated me. Perhaps it was his presence or the fact that his power was opposite of mine. Regardless of the reason, I enjoyed Junhyung’s company and wanted to spend more time with him.

I lay on my bed watching a music video from 2013, when the door slammed open and in trudged an angry Yang Yoseob. This must be serious; he never skips out on studying in the library.

“Yoseob?” I asked as he tossed his bag across the room, laid back on his bed, and groaned in agony.

            “UGH! That jerk!”

“Jerk?” I continued my light interrogation.

            “DJ of Black Eclipse.”

I took a look around the room before ushering for him to continue.

“That sore loser called me out in class. I can’t believe he’d publicly humiliate me like this. How’d he even find out where I go to school?”

I looked away, realizing it was partially my fault for telling Junhyung. How was I supposed to know this would happen? “Well, uh, what did he do?”

“He challenged me to an ETR showdown, right in front of the class.”

“ETR?” I thought for a second, and checked my holographic netbook, or holo-net, for information on the Elemental fights. “Oh, ETR. Elemental Titles Rematch. He can only call out one of those to an opponent he’s already fought, if his opponent defeated him. It’s also only able to be called within a week of the initial match. There’s no prize money involved, just redemption.”

“Yes Jang Hyunseung, I already knew that.” He rubbed his face with his hands, trying to calm down a bit.

            “Did you accept his challenge?”

“Hell no!” He spat. “What’s the use in fighting him again? If I take his challenge tonight, I’ll have no energy to help you and Kikwang against C-Clown. Besides, DJ means nothing to me.”

I nodded but then shook my head, remembering something Junhyung told me about DJ. “Actually, you probably should fight him.”

“What!” he shot up, a bit angry.

“Wait! Wait! Hear me out.” I tried to calm him down. Yoseob may be sweet and innocent, most of the time, but when angered the kid is a demon. “Look, I-I happen to know for a fact that DJ is really stubborn. And if you don’t take his challenge tonight, he’ll keep pestering you until you do, and I know how you can’t stand that.” I sighed. “He has until Tuesday for you to fight him before an ETR is null and void. Do you want to spend the entire time, from now ‘til Tuesday, arguing with him? What if he outs you as an elemental on the surface!”

Yoseob groaned. I knew he wouldn’t want that over his head. Even though elementals are the most badass fighters underground, we’re still treated as diseased freaks on the surface. Federal law forbids us from using our powers and even the fights are supposedly illegal, not that the police do anything about them.

“Ugh. Fine, but what about C-Clown?” He asked, surrendering.

“Let Kiki and me handle the first two matches and focus on your fight with Doojoon. We can handle it.”

He nodded and sighed before looking up at me. “By that way, Hyunseung, how can you know so much about a boy you never met? You even know his birth name.”

“Oh... uh...” I looked away, scratching my cheek. “I may have been... hanging out with Joker in the cafe at lunch.”

“You’re eating lunch with the enemy?!”

“I can’t help it! He approached me first. Plus, he’s really kinda interesting, with his cocky smirk, yet shy personality. He’s sort of a prankster too and he’s really good at singing and rapping and I think he has a cola addiction ‘cause he’s always drinking it and...” As I trailed off, talking about Junhyung, I noticed my small friend groan and walk out the door. I continued in my thoughts of the purple-haired Joker. His cute smile. His interesting as well as mischievous personality. I couldn’t help but like him a little. Yong Junhyung. I wonder if he thinks about me too.

[Dongwoon’s POV]

I can’t believe that Lee Kikwang.  I leaned back on the bench outside the battle cage. How could he just ask me to move in with him? We’re rivals and I don’t even know the guy. I ruffled my hair, watching Doojoon stretching for his ETR showdown. Looks like the Aegyo Storm members were getting under both our skins.

Speak of the devil; the three members of Aegyo storm entered the stadium. I saw Doojoon lock eyes with the blonde leader as his group approached the benches near the cage. It’s clear there’s a deep hatred between the two of them.

YangYo and DJ both entered the cage as the other two members of Aegyo storm sat on a bench near ours. I happened to notice Kikwang shoot me a quick eye-smile before turning back to the arena. Just who does he think he is? We’re enemies.

I leaned back on the bench again, before turning to Joker. For some reason, he wasn’t as focused as normally. I happened to catch him shooting glances at the red-haired Prince Jang and smiling.

“Yah! Hyung, what are you doing!”

He shook himself out of his gaze and turned to me. “Oh sorry.” He turned back to the arena. “I was just thinking.”

“About?” I raised my eyebrow. It wasn’t like Junhyung to zone out.

            “Oh... um... the ETR.”

He was hiding something, and I’m sure it had to do with Prince Jang. Guess the members of Aegyo Storm got under all our skins.

“Alright everyone, how you all doing!” The MC walked into the arena, gathering the attention of the audience and other competitors for the night. “Before tonight’s scheduled matches, we have a special treat for you all.”

The crowd erupted in cheers noticing both DJ and YangYo in the cage.

“That’s right, we have an ETR!”

Now more cheers penetrated my ears. I was becoming a bit annoyed but who could blame them. Elemental Title Rematches were rare. This wasn’t a first for Black Eclipse. DJ and Joker would be challenged to ETRs all the time. However, this is the first time that one of them threw out the ETR challenge.

“This ETR showdown is a one on one match, from Black Eclipse’s DJ,” The MC ushered and the crowd cheered for Doojoon, who seemed a little too focused on destroying his opponent. “... towards Aegyo Storm’s YangYo.”

The crowd’s applause was now directed at the small blonde boy who seemed rather annoyed with this whole event. He took a deep breath and turned towards his teammates outside the cage, mouthing something to his team. The red-haired Price gave YangYo a ‘thumbs up’ and the small blonde returned his gaze toward DJ. As I glanced at him, I was able to just make out what he said to DJ, “Let’s finish this fast.”

[Doojoon’s POV]

            “Let’s finish this fast.”

That cocky son of a . Does he really think he can beat me twice! I cracked my knuckles. I’m tired of this brat’s taunting. There’s no way his trick would work on me again.

“Ready?” The MC flew up to his platform above the arena. I cracked my joints as the blonde took a defensive stance. “FIGHT!”

I lunged at him quickly, throwing the first punch. As he jumped back out of my range, I spun my leg around, aiming a spin kick to his right temple. Unfortunately the brat was quick to react and placed his arm in the way to block.

He leapt back preparing a blast of light energy but I refused to let him use his power. I shot black energy snakes from my arm. They wrapped around YangYo and I used them to hurl him across the arena and into the back fence.

I extended my shadow over to reach him but he leapt high just before I could make contact. From the air he shot a thin beam of light from his fingertips. I narrowly avoided his attack, watching as it burned a hole through the ground.

YangYo landed before taking off towards me. His speed had increased from the night before and he began throwing accelerated punches and kicks toward me. I dodged all of his attacks but failed to notice a sweep kick aimed at my ankles. I fell to my back as contact was made and was immediately pinned by the sneaky brat.

YangYo held me down with one hand while gathering light energy in the other. I smirked at the fact that he thought he had me. As he nearly connected his fist with my face, I vanished beneath him, sinking deep into my own shadow.

The brat was confused, as I maneuvered through the dark void beneath him. The world of shadows was my domain. Before he could react, I rose up behind him and kicked him into the side of the arena. I immediately rushed over and slammed him into the fence with my muscular arm.

I had him pinned, my fingers clasped around his neck. It was over. I’d finally beaten the little brat. As I gathered dark energy into my fist, I took a look into his sad eyes. Those adorable big eyes and I once again felt my heart racing. What the hell is wrong with me? My hands started shaking as the dark power in my fist started faltering. He must’ve noticed because a small smile tugged at his lips. I looked down and noticed his foot started glowing with light energy.

At that moment he kicked at my knee and it buckled for under me. The brat escaped my grasp and began hitting me with a series of swift punches and kicks. I struggled to block his light energy laced attacks, but for some reason, I could no longer hold my own against him.

He kicked me into the other end of the chain-link fence and I fell to one knee. How can someone so small be so powerful? I clenched my teeth, looking up as he approached me. He wiped the hint of dry blood from his lips and smiled. “You should quit while you’re ahead.”

            “ you,” I grunted.

Without another word, he delivered a powerful kick to my stomach and I was down for the count. He took one last glance at me, and I noticed a look of pity in his eyes, before he walked away.

I rolled over onto my back, and all I could hear were the fans chanting “YangYo” around me. It was all over. My legacy was over. WHY CAN’T I DEFEAT YANGYO!!

[Yoseob’s POV]

I laid on my bed, that Saturday morning, checking the results of the matches the night before over my holo-net. I was impressed seeing that Aegyo Storm had somehow taken the number one spot on Seoul’s teams to beat list. Even though the fans say it’s due to my defeat of DJ, I still believe it was really a team effort. After all, Hyunseung and Kikwang’s defeat of C-Clown was something to behold.

I sat up hearing a knock on the door to mine and Hyunseung’s shared dorm room.

“Come in!” I yelled, closing my holo-net.

Without warning a familiar brunette boy teleported into my room, a wide smile on his face. “Hi Hyung!”

“Peniel!” I complained. “Don’t do that! What if someone saw you?”

“Relax, Hyung! I know your dormitory's empty during the weekend. You’re the only one here.” He smiled and I couldn’t help but chuckle at my dorky friend.

He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small manila envelope. “Here you go, Hyung. And your fights were awesome. I mean Hyunseung-hyung and Kikwang-hyung were amazing against C-Clown but you took on DJ again and beat him...”

I smiled at my dongsaeng’s praise. I love Peniel like a little brother, but sometimes he can be the dorkiest fan boy on the planet. But it was kinda adorable how he loves the elemental fights so much. At least he has a passion for something.

He handed me the envelope and I reached inside pulling out about 220,000 won. “Wow, Peniel. This is impressive. Thanks.”

“Anytime, Hyung,” he smiled, watching me count the currency. “But are you sure Hyunseung-hyung doesn’t know about this?”

“No, and I’d prefer he doesn’t find out. He’d never accept the money if he found out what we were doing.” I sighed lying back on my bed. “Kikwang’s adding some too, little by little. I’m sure we’ll save enough soon.”

“I hope so,” He sighed heavily, shuffling his feet on the ground. I noticed the high school boy’s worry so I decided to lighten his mood a bit.

“So, how are things with Sungjae?”

“YAH! HYUNG!” He blushed turning his gaze from me.

“What’s wrong,” I teased. “He is your best friend, after all.”

            “R-right, were best friends.”

I nudged at his sides, pushing him further. “Oh that’s right, you liiiiike him, don’t you?”

“Hyung!” He ran toward the door. “Cut it out already.”

I laughed. I knew my dongsaeng had a crush on his best friend, and I knew he was way too shy to confess. Sungjae may only be a second year in middle school but he and Peniel are closer than two twins in their mother’s womb. I can understand how he doesn’t wanna risk their friendship by confessing, after all, Sungjae doesn’t know Peniel’s gay.

“Ok, ok,” I chuckled. You should probably head home. Knowing you, you’re probably blowing off homework.”

“Am not,” he darted his eyes back and forth.

            “Go do your homework, Peniel.”

“Fine, fine,” He smiled before giving me a hug. “Bye Hyung. See you soon,” and with that, he teleported away.

I loved seeing my dongsaeng. Ever since he was a kid I’ve watched over him. At first it was just babysitting, but now I see him as one of my closest friends. I once again lay back and counted the money out.

Yet another knock interrupted my train of thought. I leapt off my bed, heading for Hyunseung’s. “Peniel! I said go do your homework!” I heard another knock and groaned. I pulled out a large shoe box, and added the money to the funds we already stashed.

The knocking on the door continued so I felt obligated to answer. It couldn’t have been Hyunseung or Kikwang; they both have keys to the room, and Peniel always teleports in. I cracked open the door, only to find the worst person I could’ve possibly greeted.

“What do you want, DJ,” I scowled at the black-haired elemental fighter.

“Let’s cut, the pleasantries, YangYo,” he spoke, softly but confidently. “I need something from you.”

“You can’t call a rematch on an ETR! Next time we fight will be an official match, Aegyo Storm vs. Black Eclipse. So why don’t you just accept your loss and get the he-”

“I’m not here for a rematch.”

I paused for a second. “Then...what do you want from me?”

He took a deep breath, biting his bottom lip. I could tell he was biting back his anger. He clenched his fist before looking at the ground. After a moment of hesitation, he dropped to his knees and looked me in the eye.

“Yang Yoseob, Will you train me?”
